I don’t understand fan fascination with Burke. Coaching doesn’t make a team play better defense. Having players who are talented defenders and that are committed to playing defense improves defense. Also, Carlisle has never been known as a defensive coach. He is all about pace, spacing, and threes. That is what he brings. Drafting players like Walker and signing people like Brown will do much more to improve defense than bringing back a coach like Burke.

I very much agree that it is players who make a good defense, all the schemes and coaching don't matter if the ability isn't there. Burke, from a distance, has seemed like the one constant in a series of great or better-than-they-should-be defenses. Plus he acquired the reputation as one of the best defensive assistants in the league, which just fuels my sense of wanting consistency. I confess it's also an emotional desire. To me, he "belongs" here :)

Also, Tom, is it intentional that only paid subscribers can comment on the Toppin post? If so, I understand, it's just that that seems to be the only one.

No, published with wrong setting. Thanks for pointing out, SjoBer! Should be fixed now.

Burke returning to help with so many defensive minded players would be awesome, but it sounds like that ship has sailed?

I believe so...but you never know.
