Every organization needs a “New Coke” momment. This is the NBA’s. I don’t care for this idea. I believe it to be a money grab for the league. Sponsorship and broadcast rights will be sold separately for this I have to imagine. This diminishes the NBA Championship. How can you have two champions in one season? It is confusing. It truly makes me feel negative thoughts about the league leadership who I have always respected. This is a boondoggle of the highest order. Someone said this has been on the drawing board for 15 years. It didn’t happen any sooner because it is a bad idea. Make it go away, Tom. Would you? (BTW… Sorry about your mothers passing. My sincere condolences.)

As much as I dislike the idea with you, the concept of a cup next to the championship is quite common in European football/soccer and is a real part of the season there (I grew up in the Netherlands as a soccer fan). It adds two things there in my experience:

1. A chance for smaller 'cupfighter' teams to win something, since they prioritize it as they know they cannot win the championship.

2. A chance to get into the EUFA Europa League: an international tournament of cup winners from other leagues among others. Which gives smaller teams a chance to gain much needed income compared to the giants.

I'm just not sure what this would add for the NBA though?

It's gimmicky, but I don't hate it. I'm a fan of the EPL which always has 2 or more competitions running simultaneously between: League play, League Cup, FA Cup, and European competitions. Mid season NBA games can feel a bit mundane as teams grind through; resting players and just trying to stay healthy for the post-season or tank for a draft pick. Maybe this throws a little extra spice in the mix.

According to Michael Grange of Sportsnet, Pacers are trying to trade for Pascal Siakam.

Nembhard Hield and picks for Siakam?

Good player, but with Obi and the rookie there seems to be a lot of positional overlap. Unsure how much that matters for a team in the Pacers' position, but still...

And for those that don’t know, Sportsnet is part of Rogers Media, which is big in Toronto.

Before the Obi trade Pacers had discussion about Fournier in a 3 teams deals including the suns. Something like McConnell to the Suns Fournier Pacers and Knicks Cap space... In the end nothing happened but it makes me think maybe we will not seeing McConnell with a Pacers Jersey. It's a sad news.
