The Pacers are a team in desperate need of a Summer League game.
Well, that may be a bit strong, maybe its more fair to say I am DESPERATE to watch a Pacers Summer League game, so the postponement of their first game schedule for Sunday evening was a major buzzkill.
From my admittedly myopic view of the situation, no team needs more quality player development opportunities than the Pacers. For starters, they have two first round picks in Chris Duarte and Isaiah Jackson who will be worth watching as they get their feet wet in the blue and gold. The postponement may help Jackson since he was likely able to get a practice in which he was unable to do last week in Indy while waiting for the NBA trade that sent him to the Pacers to be complete.
Then you have young guys looking to show their improvement, most notably Cassius Stanley who was viciously underdeveloped in his rookie year thanks to the pandemic and coach who was stingy with minutes for those outside the top eight in the playing rotation. Goga Bitadze’s lack of development opportunities is even worse and appears to be continuing as he deals with personal issues and is not in Vegas.
Other intriguing players on the Summer Pacers roster include Oshae Brissett and Amida Brimah trying to affirm their value. Duane Washington Jr. and The Basketball Tournament hero, Keifer Sykes are two guards worth watching. Washington was a mutha at Ohio State and is on a two-way with the Pacers. His development handling point guard duties will likely determine his NBA future, but the guy is never afraid to make a play.
All of these guys in need of individual development while as a whole also needing to get familiar with a new coach and approach for the upcoming season.
Fortunately, the Pacers and Knicks both had a scheduled day off on Monday and were able to add the 2 p.m. ET tip to quickly make up for the missed game. Don’t forget CC’s primer on the roster. Oh, and the game will be shown on NBA TV.
Prepare to overreact!!!
