The first Players of the Week awards for each conference were announced on Monday and Domantas Sabonis was given the nod in the Eastern Conference and he certainly earned the honor.
Sabonis averaged 24.3 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists while helping push the Pacers to a 3-0 start. Those numbers included a career-high 32 points in the opener against the Knicks, a tasty triple-double in the Bulls blowout and a sweet game-winner to hold off the Celtics for the third win.
The 3-0 record is the only thing perfect about the Pacers right now as they continue developing as a team under Nate Bjorkgren. The team has struggled to make threes, untimely turnovers are annoying as are missed free throws.
Making free throws is the one area Sabonis can improve drastically to take a run at Player of the Month. But he’s certainly carrying his share of the load for the Pacers as they continue gathering confidence in what Bjorkgren is asking them to do thanks to the positive reinforcement on the floor.
