It looks like Indiana’s trio of second round picks will be staying close to home while the Pacers take to the road.

The Indiana Pacers have assigned Edmond Sumner and Alize Johnson to the Mad Ants prior to their upcoming two-game roadie this weekend against the Miami Heat and Houston Rockets, the team announced on Wednesday.

In addition to fellow second-round draft pick Ike Anigbogu, Johnson and Sumner will also be reunited with Ben Moore, who rejoined Fort Wayne after being waived by the Pacers last Saturday.

Rookie Alize Johnson is the only player among those four without G League experience, but he does have past experience with Mad Ants coach Steve Gansey, having been coached by him in Summer League action in Las Vegas.

Sumner, meanwhile, averaged 7.2 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in 14 games with the Mad Ants last season while working his way back into shape from a knee injury.

Currently inked to a two-way contract, assigning the 6-foot-5 guard to Fort Wayne not only supplements his development with extended minutes; it slows down the sand in the hourglass on the 45-day maximum he can spend with the Pacers.

With tenacity and quick feet, both players should fit-in relatively seamlessly with Fort Wayne’s young, gritty roster, but Sumner may end up having to lean on his physical attributes to slash to the rim and generate open shots for shooters.

The Mad Ants shot 29 percent from long-range in their season opener, with floor spacers Omari Johnson and Elijah Stewart combining for just one make on nine attempts. On the bright side, if the rocky shooting continues, there will be plenty of opportunities for Johnson to demonstrate the nose he has for the ball on the offensive glass.

Fort Wayne’s home opener is Friday at 7:00 PM against the Erie Bayhawks and then they are back in action at the Coliseum on Saturday when the Maine Red Claws come to town.
