The Orlando Magic have finalized a deal to make Frank Vogel their next head coach, according to Magic beat writer Josh Robbins.
Vogel takes over for Scott Skiles who suddenly stepped down last week creating a quality job opening for Vogel to pursue. The former Pacers coach, who leaves Indy second in all-time wins for the franchise, will have a talented, young roster to work with to add to his NBA coaching win total.
It sounds like Memphis was also ready to advance things with Vogel, but the Magic situation was too good to pass up. From a pure current roster view point, I think Vogel would have been a perfect fit for the Grizzlies, assuming they retain Mike Conley. But the Magic have more long-term upside and...Florida. Lotsa sunshine and no income tax.
Vogel will see plenty of familiar faces for his team's first Summer League game as the Summer Magic open up the Orlando Summer League against the Summer Pacers. The Pacers announced their Orlando Summer League plans on Thursday with the following schedule around the Fourth of July.
Pacers vs. Magic Blue, Sat., July 2 at 1 p.m. ET
Pacers vs. Hornets, Sun., July 3 at 1 p.m. ET
Pacers vs. Pistons, Tues., July 5 at 5 p.m. ET
Pacers vs. Thunder, Wed. July 6 at 5 p.m. ET
Pacers vs. TBD (Championship Day), Fri., July 8 Time TBD
While the Summer League schedule coincidence is rich, team head coaches don't normally coach the Summer League squads. Dan Burke often takes the bench coaching duties for the Summer Pacers and I'm sure one of Vogel's assistants in Orlando (assuming he's named coach) would do the same. But there will be plenty of familiar faces taking in the game which should make for a fun dynamic for all of us hoops-starved nuts who enjoy Summer League action.
