NBA Draft: Pacers' Monday-Workout Primer

Taking a closer look at the prospects coming to Indy Monday for a pre-Draft workout.

Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports

Today marks the beginning of team workouts for the Indiana Pacers. Workout No. 1 is guard-heavy, featuring two likely first-round picks in Cameron Payne and Jerian Grant.

Here's a quick snapshot of each participant:

Cameron Payne - Murray St.

Age: 20.7
PG: 6' 2" 183 lbs
Wingspan: 6' 7.25"
Max Vertical: 35.5
Current Draft Projection: Mid-to-Late First Round

Draftboard riser. Willing passer with excellent court vision. Floor-general instincts. Steady 3PT shooter who improved by three-percentage points from his Freshman to Sophomore season. Scores in a variety of ways. Demonstrates impressive array of floaters and teardrops in the lane. Smallish frame. Needs to get stronger. Concerns about defensive makeup at next level.

How he'd fit with the Pacers: backup PG with eye toward eventually replacing George Hill

Chad Ford's thoughts:

Murray State's Cameron Payne is also a hot name, and sources indicate that one team in particular (Indiana Pacers) is looking seriously at the guard at No. 11. Payne is coming in to work out with the Pacers on Monday. While a mobile big is also a possibility for the Pacers, Payne has a big fan club in Indy.

Olivier Hanlan - Boston College

Age: 22.2
PG/SG: 6' 4" 186 lbs
Wingspan: 6' 6.5"
Max Vertical: 34
Current Draft Projection: Second Round

Combo guard, named to ACC All-Conference 1st Team. Crafty, patient scorer (19.5 PPG) who relies on quick first step, hesitations, and change of speeds/direction in order to score and dish. Capable in pick-and-roll situations. Improving passer. Great finisher around the rim due to solid build. Average athlete. Limited defender.

How he'd fit with the Pacers: bench scorer, capable of playing either guard spot.

Jerian Grant - Notre Dame

Age: 22.6
PG/SG: 6' 4" 198 lbs
Wingspan: 6' 7.5"
Max Vertical: NA
Current Draft Projection: Late-Lottery-to-Mid First Round

Ideally sized PG with wide range of offensive skills. Borderline elite distributor. Dangerous when attacking or facilitating in transition. Heady shot creator. Lethal from mid-range and when attacking the basket. Takes care of the ball. Initiates contact: gets to the line at an above-average rate. Occasionally an unfocused defender. Streaky outside shooter.

Chad Ford's take:

If Grant were 19 or 20 years old, he'd be a top-10 pick. He has had as good a season as anyone on the board. However, he turns 23 before opening night of the 2015-16 NBA season, and that "older age" often scares teams from taking a player so high ... I think he might be the most underrated guy on our Board.

How he'd fit with the Pacers: see Payne, Cameron. Plays multiple positions/offers versatility.

Rakeem Christmas - Syracuse

Age: 23.4
C/PF: 6' 10" 243 lbs
Wingspan: 7' 5.25"
Max Vertical: NA
Current Draft Projection: Second Round

Standout athlete with excellent length. Averaged 2.5 blocks per game in Syracuse's famed 2-3 Zone. Limited offensively, especially in the halfcourt. One of the most impressive performers at the NBA Draft Combine, demonstrating an improved offensive arsenal during 5-on-5 scrimmages.

How he'd fit with the Pacers: athletic, developmental big to sit and learn behind Roy Hibbert, David West, and Ian Mahinmi.

Richaun Holmes - Bowling Green

Age: 21.5
PF: 6' 10" 243 lbs
Wingspan: 7' 1.5"
Max Vertical: 36
Current Draft Projection: Second Round

NBA-level athlete who starred at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament (where Shayne Whittington was discovered). Improving offensive player with face-up skills. Gradually extending range out to three-point line (41.9% on 1.4 attempts per game in college). Best known for his impact on the defensive side of the ball. Solid rebounder. Averaged nearly three blocks per game at Bowling Green. Although a senior, Holmes doesn't turn 22 until October.

How he'd fit with the Pacers: See Christmas, Rakeem.

Joseph Young - Oregon

Age: 22.8
PG/SG: 6' 2" 182 lbs
Wingspan: 6' 5"
Max Vertical: 40.5
Current Draft Projection: Second Round

PAC-12 Player of the Year. Although undersized, a dynamic athlete and scorer (20.7 PPG) accustomed to playing in a fast-paced system. Explosive in the open court. Creative shot-maker. Loves the big moment. At times, reckless with the ball. Limited defensively due to size.

How he'd fit with the Pacers: more shot-making off the bench? Yes, please.
