The Pacers are in the city that never sleeps so Chris Copeland decided to make the most of his stay and found himself headed to the hospital after an argument at 4 a.m. left him with a stab wound in the abdomen.
Reports from New York say Cope was in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital, so thankfully he should be fine.
As for the Pacers, this serves as a healthy distraction as they try to focus on winning their remaining games starting on Wednesday night against the Knicks. The only silver lining (and I'm talking from a basketball standpoint, not the Cope incident) is that the Pacers play the Knicks and Cope isn't part of the playing rotation.
It has been awhile since the Pacers had a scary distraction like this, although they did weather a couple of embarrassing off-court distractions from Paul George last year. The concern for Cope will make this distraction take up more energy and could shake some guys. We don't know all of the details, so others on the team may have been with Cope earlier or at the time things turned bad. Still a lot of questions regarding the circumstances of the night, er morning.
The Eastern Conference standings remain absolute and unaware of any team's circumstance and right now the Pacers are one game out of eighth place, although don't have the tie breaker against Boston. Miami won last night so they slid a half game ahead of the Pacers.
So beginning tonight, the only thing the Pacers can do is win and then sort out the mess later.
"We are aware that Chris Copeland was injured early this morning in New York City. We are still gathering information and will update when we know more. Our thoughts are with Chris and those injured."
Now TMZ Sports has released a story with pictures and a video shot just after the stabbing which captures a bit of the chaos and Copeland appearing alert and OK, but definitely shook on the ground (includes NSFW commentary).
