Heat such overwhelming favorites, Indiana's championship odds dwarfed

Despite being among the five best odds to win the NBA Championship, Miami's odds makes the Pacers' look minuscule.

Pat Lovell-USA TODAY Sports

The folks at Bovada have their championship odds for the 2013 NBA Playoffs, and as expected, the Miami Heat are the heavy favorites to repeat. But what comes as a surprise is just how much of a favorite they are. The Heat opened at a 5/8 line, but it hasn't proven a deterrent, with their line dropping to 2/3 due to the sheer number of bets.

It makes the Indiana Pacers' 25/1 odds seem impossible by comparison as the bets suggest the Pacers are among 15 other teams playing for second. But due in part to the Eastern Conference being seen as the inferior conference, the Pacers' odds are right up with the top of the league, placing them in a three way tie with the Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Clippers for fifth, respectful of their seeding, and respectful of the path they'll face that would require what's shaping up to be one of the greatest upsets in NBA history.

Just how big of a line advantage do the Heat have? Just take a look at the four years leading up to this season as a comparison:

Odds to win the 2008-2009 NBA Championship

Cleveland Cavaliers 4/3

Odds to win the 2009-2010 NBA Championship

Cleveland Cavaliers 7/4

Odds to win the 2010-2011 NBA Championship

Los Angeles Lakers 11/4

Odds to win the 2011-2012 NBA Championship

Miami Heat 11/5

Winning has done Miami a lot of good to drastically improve their odds over last year, but so to has their 66-16 regular season, the 27-game winning streak, and once against Most Valuable Player LeBron James's otherwordly season. But despite everything being so heavily favored towards the Heat, they did finish the season 4-6 against the Indiana Pacers, Chicago Bulls, and New York Knicks, and it's very possible the Heat could go head to head with two of those teams. A seven game series victory for any of those three, including the Pacers? That's as long a shot as the bets say, but there's a reason they play the games.

As for the rest of the NBA postseason? Here are the odds to win the NBA Championship:

Miami Heat 2/3

Oklahoma City Thunder 17/4

San Antonio Spurs 10/1

New York Knicks 16/1

New York Knicks 7/1

Indiana Pacers 12/1

Chicago Bulls 25/1

Brooklyn Nets 28/1

Boston Celtics 30/1

Atlanta Hawks 66/1

San Antonio Spurs 5/2

Denver Nuggets 6/1

Los Angeles Clippers 15/2

Memphis Grizzlies 14/1

Of course, those odds are certainly long, especially when the Heat often have a better chance of going undefeated.
