With four games remaining in the regular season, the Indiana Pacers currently hold the 3rd seed for the NBA Eastern Conference Playoffs. Entering tonight's home game against Brooklyn, the Pacers have a 49-29 record and are winners of six of their last eight games. Despite the sparse number of games remaining for the Pacers, they could have a great impact on what seed the team ultimately grabs. The Pacers currently have a three game lead over the 4th place Nets and are basically assured at least a three seed as they would win the tiebreaker over the Nets as winners of the Central division which they clinched several days ago.
More importantly for Indiana is they sit only two games behind the recently red-hot New York Knicks. The Pacers hold a 2-1 season series lead over the New York squad and the two teams face off on Sunday. In the event that the Pacers can beat the Knicks they would hold the tiebreaker, but more importantly they could guarantee that they would make up at least one game. While the Pacers are 7-3 in their last ten games, the Knicks have been even hotter as they had a 13 game winning streak snapped on Thursday night against the Chicago Bulls.
A win tonight for Indiana would clinch at least the three seed in the East. George Hill bounced back from a series of disappointing performances to score 27 points in a comeback win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday. Indiana has been nearly indomitable at home this year, boasting an impressive 30-9 record. If the standings held as of right now, the Pacers would host Atlanta in the first round of the playoffs.
On the other side of the court on Friday night, the Nets have almost assuredly secured the 4th seed in the conference. They are three games clear of Chicago for third place and are three games behind the Pacers for third. While it is certainly conceivable that they could get extremely hot or cold, they will likely be the four seed in the upcoming playoffs and have home-court advantage in the first round.
