David West Shows Off Game At Pacers Fan Jam

New, comments

The Indiana Pacers newly-minted power forward David West did not play in Friday's preseason opener against the Chicago Bulls.

Knowing this before the game, I was skeptical that West's situation may end up reminding us of Tyler Hansbrough's unfortunate rookie year when the team didn't divulge the full extent of his injury or how long it could keep him sidelined.

In hindsight, nobody knew the impact on Hansbrough, but I wanted to get something positive on West. At least three people I talked to mentioned that West shouldn't be a concern for season opener. They had seen him practice, he wasn't even wearing a sleeve on his knee, let alone a bulky brace. Frank Vogel said he had no concerns about West starting in the regular season opener even if he didn't play in Tuesday's last preseason game.

Then I saw West going through individual work before the game and putting in work on post moves from every conceivable angle without, as advertised, anything covering his knee.

Well, today during the team scrimmage at Conseco Fieldhouse for the Fan Jam event, the Pacers took the wraps off of West's game, as Conrad Brunner reports.

The event marked the unofficial debut of power forward David West, who made his first public on-court appearance since signing with the Pacers last Tuesday. West played well, scoring 13 points.

"Every time we get him on the court it takes him a step further in getting acclimated and he looked good again tonight," Coach Frank Vogel said. "He looks great. He's still working his way in with his conditioning over long minutes and he's picking up the nuances of our system. It's still going to take time."

The news isn't so great for Jeff Pendergraph since he tweaked his repaired knee with a new injury, I don't expect to see him on the court until some time during the regular season. That makes the trade for Lou Admundson critical since the Pacers would like to make the playoffs without having to use up heavy minutes on Jeff Foster nor West I'm sure. Having another body to put in quality minutes in the front court is desperately needed.

Now the Pacers just need to find some players to put the ball in the hoop.

Oh, and I was unable to attend today's Fan Jam event so if anyone has a good report or any solid pictures or video, please share in the Fan Posts or Fan Shots.
