Tinsley Shooting Update

According to this WTHR report, Tinsley was out with his brothers and a few of their friends. It also appears that nothing happened in the club, it was a case of Tinsley's Rolls Royce attracting the attention of the criminal element that is known to hang out on West 38th Street.

Here an Indy Star update, as well. The Star's John Strauss appears to be all over this story. Here's the new information.

Sgt. Paul Thompson, a spokesman for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, said two of the vehicles in Tinsley's group followed the shooters in a chase to Monument Circle, and Tinsley's brother, James, returned fire at the attackers. It was unknown whether anyone was hit. Jamaal Tinlsey was not involved in the chase, Thompson said.

Authorities were called to the hotel where the initial shooting occurred at 50 W. Washington St. about 3:40 a.m.

Thompson said the incident began at a club called "Cloud 9" on West 38th Street. A group was giving members of Tinsley's crew a hard time about the expensive cars they were driving - a Mercedes, Rolls Royce and a Dodge Charger - and the amount of money they made.
A car chase with bullets flying around Monument Circle? Yikes!

According to this report, Tinsley has nothing to worry about from a legal point of view. Why these guys find themselves on West 38th Street after midnight is beyond me, so if you want to dock him for poor judgment, feel free. Cloud 9 is a stone's throw from Club Rio, where Stephen Jackson's infamous gun-firing incident occurred. That part of town is no joke after midnight.

Not at fault, but...
...maybe because I was in the Army for so long, I'm more accepting of what some folks would think of as unacceptable limitations on their private life.  I've been stationed in places where certain neighborhoods or businesses were 'off-limits,' either completely, or after certain hours of the evening. It wasn't anything against a business or people in any given area...it was just that, statistically, more soldiers got in more trouble in those places, and the powers-that-be were removing the possibility of that situation continuing.

What the military didn't have to worry about was negative PR from making those areas off-limits.  I'm not sure what the fall-out would be in the realm of public opinion in Indy if the Pacers tried to say that one particular area or list of businesses was off-limits for the Pacers' players.

Not sure how the players would take it, either. But I am sure that not doing anything illegal is not the same thing as not doing anything ill-considered or chancy or, uh, stupid.

Can't justify Cloud 9 at 3AM in a Rolls Royce
Stupid is about right. That situation is fly paper for trouble. The whole thing is escalated because it's Tins.

I don't know the area
Never lived in Indy, but here's a link to Cloud 9:

(tip of the hat to dr goldfoot for finding the link)

The place doesn't look that bad...actually seems OK.  Is that an inaccurate impression?  At that time of the night?

Don't know about the club on the inside
but the surrounding area on the outside at that time of night breeds trouble.

asdf
everyone else is already saying it, but what the hell is he doing in that part of town that time of night?

If he wants to hit the clubs, there are plenty of other places he can go that don't have the reputation for trouble that W 38th has.

Tinsley's play may be better this year but it seems that he is as dumb as ever in his off time.

Live and learn
Plenty of past problems in that area. Lots of livin' not much learnin'.

West 38th
Let's kill the ridiculous generalizations about West 38th Street.  True the neighborhood, which I have lived in my whole 22 years, has its problems.  But the area is in no way "seedy" or a haven for the "criminal element."

Let's look at the supposedly seedy surroundings of Cloud 9: Several family restaurants, including Red Lobster.  A Staple's, a Meijer, a Best Buy.  A Starbucks.  A couple of car dealerships.  True, Club Rio is nearby, but other than that, it's a commercial district like most others.

This isn't a proverbial bad neighborhood.  This isn't the ghetto.  It's ridiculous to suggest that my neighborhood is so rough-and-tumble that it should be considered off-limits for anyone.  And frankly, it's insulting.

And let's not be too quick to judge Jamaal, either.  From the looks of it, Jamaal was out till 3:00, but he didn't have to be at work until 11 the next morning.  Maybe pushing it just a little bit, but nothing ridiculous.

And let's not act like he's the first guy in his 20's staying out late at the club, trying to have a good time.

Basically, he got caught in a bad situation, and tried to handle it the best way he could think of.  Thank God no one seems to be seriously injured.

I've spent plenty of time in that area in daylight
hours. But at 2-3am there are safer spots in town. Glad to see when trouble started in the parking lot, Tins saddled his crew up and left. Unfortunately, trouble followed him.
