Pacers: Danny Granger to have surgery, miss remainder of the season

Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

The Pacers shut down Granger for the season after trying to give him one more chance to play.

The Indiana Pacers will shut down forward Danny Granger for the season in order to have surgery on the left knee that has kept him off the court this season for all but five games, according to the team. From the release:

The decision was made after all conservative treatment options could not alleviate the soreness Granger encountered. After consultation between Granger, the Pacers' medical staff and Dr. James Andrews, surgery became the preferred option.

Granger underwent a procedure in late October for patellar tendinosis. He returned Feb. 25 and played five games before continued soreness in the knee sidelined him. After further rehab did not ease the soreness, surgery was decided on. He is expected to be ready for training camp.

The Pacers hoped to have Granger available to play in Dallas tonight but obviously the knee pain flared up enough to scrap that effort. Granger has one year remaining on his contract with the Pacers but now even that has to remain questionable depending on the success of the surgery and how the knee recovers.

The impact on the team this year won't be big since the Pacers have essentially played without him all year. Now they are officially moving on without Granger and all we can do is wish Danny the best of luck with the surgery and hope to see him playing again in Pacers uniform next year.
