NBA hits Paul Pierce with $15,000 fine for flagrant foul on George Hill

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

The Nets veteran forward was ejected from the game on Sunday after laying out George Hill on a break away layup attempt.

The NBA hit Paul Pierce with a Christmas Eve fine of $15,000 for whacking George Hill in the head on a break away layup attempt as the Pacers were in the process of snuffing out Brooklyn's competitive spirit in the third quarter.

As you can see in the video below, Pierce going to catch Hill to defend his layup and instead appeared to have enough of the heat the Pacers were applying. The head shot allowed PP to get out of the kitchen and finish the game in the locker room after the officials assessed a Flagrant 2 foul.

As Candace Buckner reported after the game, the Pacers didn't have a problem with the foul. Despite appearances, David West gave Pierce a pass on his intent to do anything other than foul Hill.

I must say, I've only seen Pierce play a few times this year, including both games against the Pacers. His age is showing in what he can do on the floor, but worse, it appears he left his fire for the game in Boston after moving on to Brooklyn. Some of that surely has to do with the losing and first part of the season. I just wonder if he'll be able to tap into anything resembling his old game, if the Nets do need him at the end of the season.

As I mentioned during the game, Pierce and Danny Granger looked like a couple of old guys trying to get their game together at the Baxter Y last night during the second quarter. Granger playing his third game in four nights, had little left in his legs as the front rim will attest.

Here is the play that earned Pierce his fine:
