Indiana Pacers coach Frank Vogel locked up a little security on Monday as the team solidified their head coaching position for the near future by extending Vogel's contract. How long? How much? The team did not disclose those terms.
Since earning the job after taking over from Jim O'Brien on an interim basis to end the 2010-11 season, Vogel has been working on one-year deals the past two seasons. From the Pacers release on the signing:
"This is a good deal for Frank and the franchise," said Pacers President of Basketball Operations Donnie Walsh. "Frank has done a great job turning our team around since he became coach and deserves the chance to continue the work he and his staff have started."
Said Vogel, "I'm honored that Donnie, Kevin (General Manager Pritchard) and Mr. Simon (owner Herb Simon) have such belief and faith in me to be their coach in the foreseeable future. We've established a great connection with our community the last two years, both on and off the court and I look forward to continuing that."
Vogel has earned the extension by coaching the heck out of a young team to compile a 82-56 record since taking over the head job. On top of that, Vogel is also a PR dream, great with the media and a guy that seems to really enjoy his voice and standing in the greater community of Central Indiana.
