Good news: Hill plans to be back before the All Star Break
Injured Indiana Pacers guard George Hill has some work ahead of him before he returns to the lineup, but he took a step in that direction Saturday when he wore a shoe on his left foot instead of a walking boot.
Hill has missed the past three games after suffering a small chip fracture in his left ankle against New Jersey on Jan. 31.
"It's not as bad as they thought it was," Hill said. "It's only a partial chip instead of it being fully chipped. They say my return is looking pretty good."
Neither Hill nor the Pacers would put a timetable on his return, but the former Broad Ripple High School and IUPUI star said his goal is to return before the All-Star break, which starts Feb. 23.
"I'm planning on it," Hill said. "I have to continue to do the rehab they've got me doing and things like that."
Clearly not a definitive diagnosis, but just hearing that it's "not as bad as they thought" is enough to make me smile. I'd prefer he not push it and take through the break to rest it, but I'm not a doctor, just stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Exactly...
This isn’t a sprain, it’s a bone chip. Rest up George and return after the Break.
The Pacers don’t necessarily need him right now, they NEED him healthy for the 2nd Half push. The Pacers aren’t catching the Bulls (unless Rose’s back becomes serious) so going after that mid-seed spot is the goal.

We needed him the other night
Bench is looking thin without him and Foster. When both come back, I hope they’re fully rested. We need them ASAP.

Sure they do..
But the starters cost us that game.

Only because our bench hasn’t been playing well and Vogel had to increase the starters playing time. They were gassed for the Magic game.

A reasonable argument.
Just as reasonable as saying that taking Hansbrough out when he did was a mistake. If I recall correctly, it looked like he was still good to go, rather than tired.
That replacing Stephenson just after he forced two turnovers was a mistake. If Vogel had left stephenson for a few more minutes there when he was playing well, it’s possible that PG/DG are fresher at the end of the game and maybe they get one of those all so important shots to go down.
… In the end I complained about Vogel.

I don't know
He does’t have many options. Granger couldn’t have BEGGED for a better shot that straight ahead three to tie it. I didn’t see much to complain about coaching-wise. The starters should close out the game. The problem was pretty obvious. They’d just played a long, tough game (and played hard down the stretch to increase the lead) in Dallas, hopped on a plane and had to play this home game in the midst of the Super Bowl frenzy. They were obviously tired and frazzled. But if our bench was healthy that may not have been so much of a problem. Just a smidge more freshness and we win that one. It was supposed to be our advantage heading into the season: No stars but like 8 NBA-caliber guys who were, to some degree, interchangeable. Now we’re down to six (sorry, Dahntay and Lou, as well as you’ve been playing lately, I don’t count you).
Also, 50 Cent looks like he’s put on some weight. All that money, I guess.

agree
the bench playing better than the 1st unit, it was strange to put back all the starters when we were finally in the game and especially Hansbrough who was agressive and efficient.
Sometimes you’ve got to stay with what is working and the 1st unit was not in a good day.
But
Our team is devoid of closers. Let’s say the bench stayed in, would you really want Dahntay Jones or AJ Price shooting the game-tying three instead of Granger? I mean, even if you would prefer the bench take those clutch shots, guys get tired. In the NBA, the whole point of a second unit is to give starters a break and sustain leads, or keep games close, until the starters are fresh enough to close things out. I’m not saying the bench didn’t outplay the starters for that stretch of one game, but I am saying the starters are starters for a reason, and need to be in there at crucial times.

No, it sounds like you have a few specific complaints
I just don’t think it really matters. In the end our bench guys would’ve been too tired or our starters would have sucked it up (like they did). A few nit-picks about minute distribution aside, this loss was, to me, a product of the back-to-back and our lack of able bodies, rather than an outright coaching failure.

I think it's probably one of those kinda darned if you do or darned if you don't....
…So, he leaves the bench in, they revert back to their season averages of poor shooting, shot selection, and ball movement and then we are cursing Vogel for letting the starters sit too long.

Yep
That is some good news for us. I was thinking more like April. The bad thing about his injury it might take him a while once in live games to be effective 100%. He is a small framed guy with bony ankles. I had same kind of injury and was out for a while and thought I could come back and it sucked. I finally had to rest it for a few more weeks. Thats awesome though if we can get Hill back before March. Be nice though if we can find someone to help out the small forward position so Danny and Paul isnt so gassed. Andrei Kerilenko would have been nice if he didnt cost so much.
***Forever Grunge...Man!***
*Hill with the steal, he drives the lane and finger rolls. COUNT IT aaaand put'em on the line...A magnificant display of defense from George Hill*
He also apparently doesn't want to play in the U.S. until next year

I wonder if he's sign a MLE offer?
He’d fill some huge needs. He can guard 2-4s and some 5s. 25 mpg off the bench, trade Tyler or cut into his minutes when he’s not knocking down jumpers (which is often these days).

Obviously next year...not worth buying out and I don't think he wants to come over

Speaking of Hill
Any guesses as to what Larrys final offer to Hill and his agent was (supposedly they were $1.5 million per year apart)
Hill wanted 7.5
So Larry apparently offered in the 6 range. I’m iffy with 6, let alone 7.5.
"He's like Darth Vader." - Frank Vogel on Larry Bird
Ouch
I was hoping for 3/16-18 mil…7.5 is too much for a non-starter. Where’d you hear that? Not that I don’t believe you, just curious.

"He's like Darth Vader." - Frank Vogel on Larry Bird
Yeah. I think Larry Hughes (among others) proved that you don't pay much over the MLE...
…for a combo guard that isn’t really a starter at either position.
Hill’s a nice versitile backup, and he’s been solid, but he’s going to have to prove alot more than he has to warrant more than $6mil. per.

That's great news to know he's improving.
I’d rather him wait until after the all-star break. Heading into the All-star break we get a Hornets sandwich on Bobcat bread with a side of Nets.
Not that I’d guarantee a win over any of those bottom feeders, but there are no sure things with our ability to go through extended stretches of poor shooting and questionable focus/discipline (the later has almost evaporated completely thankfully, but the shooting woes still show up).
None the less, I think we can survive that week before the break and give him some extra rest to get fully healed. I’m not doc, but that certainly sounds like something that could be made worse if it’s not fully healed.
On a side note. It’d be nice to add another player or get Pendergraph on the court or something so our starters aren’t getting gassed.
