Should we sign JR Smith?
Hi guys, I'm new to the blog and this is my first fan post. I'm a huge Indiana Pacers fan from San Diego.
Anyway, what do you think of the Pacers going after JR Smith once he finished his contract with Chinese Basketball League? With George Hill out indefinitely, I really think we need another option to come off the bench. Born Ready to me is just not the type of player that will give us a scoring punch, and I just can't trust him with all his dribbling and turnovers. GH might be out somewhere between 3-6 weeks, which is a very LONG time. We can sign Smith for the rest of the season and see if it pans out maybe we can offer him midlevel exception this offseason. I know he is a little bit of a head case, but with Frank Vogel and Brian Shaw at the helm I think they can get him under control. The question is wil he sign with us, being a small market team. But with our talent and expectations this year, I think we are a fairly attractive destination for free agents. I think signing Smith will be a huge upgrade on the bench and once we get GH back, then I think the East will be ours to lose.

he might be talented but
he can be a headcase also. he might disrupt the chemistry that we have right now.
in my opinion, he’s a high risk, high reward player though. if we can control him, i think we can really go deep in the playoffs but history tells us that he will, sooner or later, be the jr smith that we all know which is not good.
pass for now.
At this point, I'll take anyone that can offer our bench some fire power.
Because Hansbrough is freaking terrible of late, AJ can’t shoot to save his soul, Lance is still too undeveloped, and Dahntay is too inconsistent. We really need another scorer off the bench.
I’d trust that anyone that comes in would toe the line with David West and his redwood-tree sized arms policing the locker room. Bring in a guy that can score, please.
I agree.
A scorer is needed to decrease our starter’s minutes. A wing player in my opinion is the best bet here, or I will take another big man.
This bit with Hill out has really shown me that Lance needs to handle the ball to be at his most effective
He’s really not getting much done as a 2 guard
Is kaman really off the market?
Saw a report earlier on espn but I am thinking it’s just a bargaining ploy. He can provide some scoring off the bench. But of course it all depends on what NOLA does with him. Does anyone have any update on the Kaman saga?
from what I read they're asking too much in terms of wanting draft picks back
Sounds like Stern is running things and asking too much. Of course he claims he’s not and that Demps is in control
At this point....
I’d give a top 22 protected pick and swap 2nd rounders for him…but…NO’s owes their 2nd rounder to Cleveland.
Make it top 26 protected (which is virtually unheard of) and not very protected beyond. It might be worth the risk. But, knowing our luck, we’d finish with the 27th pick, a bunch of players we thought would be adding to the depth of the 1st round will decide to stay in school and we’ll be stuck picking a D-league talent at 27 and then suffer a bunch of injuries next season and give them a late lotto pick.
On second thought. It’s a salary dump or nothing. Stern won’t let the Pacers get beyond the 2nd round anyway with his hired goons with whistles evening the playing field for superstar teams.

Here's a thought.
Starters: Roy, David, Paul, dahntay, Darren.
2nd unit: Lou, Tyler, Danny, lance, aj.
Reserves: 2 jeffs.
PG has been scoring much better of late anyway. D. Jones can replace the defense that danny brings while Danny will score on the opposing team’s bench and still provide good defense. Tyler will be option 2 in that unit.
What do you guys think? Should I start coaching or just continue blogging?
Please be gentle.
Why?
Is there a problem with the first unit? No. Is the second unit costing us games? No. The starting unit understands how to play with one another and have chemistry together. Why mess it up just to have Dahntay play the first 5 minutes of the quarter? You don’t mess that up just for some more bench scoring. Just keep a starter on the court with the second unit if they are struggling on a particular night. I believe a change like this would solve a small issue only to make a bigger one as a result.
That’s the way I see it anyways.

understand where you're coming from.
just trying to think out of the box and find ways on how to improve our bench scoring.
would you still feel the same way if i switched PG for Danny so Danny starts with Dahntay at the wing spots while PG and Lance back them up?
Not really.
Same reasons.

Not a good idea
Sorry but bringing our number 1 scorer off the bench would be a bad move. No problem with our starters, just playing heavy minutes because our bench is not playing good right now. Plus an injured GH don’t help.
I think we see that our starters playing heavy minutes....
…with our style of play….is an issue…as we see tonight by a billion wide open air balls.
The key is finding the best value we can to use our open roster spot and cap space to add another player to our rotation. Preferably for just the remainder of the season.
If Foster and Hill are healthy, forget about it. We are as set as we can hope to be. But, asking that an NBA team is 100% healthy for every game in a season like this is insane.
If we can get lucky enough to stay mostly healthy and be pretty much 100% for the playoffs…that will be enough for me.
Danny to the bench ended when he started hitting shots and stopped turning the ball over and forcing stupid shots.

Our bench is not looking pretty as of late, and the starters are really playing heavy minutes because of our bench play. Not good if we’re going deep in the playoffs.
Totally agree.
I’m sure Bird sees this and will try to address this.
I wouldn’t mind seeing more of Pends and less of Hans. Can’t keep handing Hans minutes when he’s been this bad.
And it's now my sig

TOTALLY disagree
you can’t be serious, if so, that’s the worst suggestion i’ve seen here. TYLER has so much upside relative to PENDERGRAPH. even w/his slump, he’s capable at anytime, like last night, of putting up many points. and, his energy and spark are something PENDERGRAPH can never bring. rather than less minutes, HANSBROUGH needs more minutes and to be involved in the offense more. w/that, his slump will end if it hasn’t already.

I like your style, dude
But do you have to use so many capital letters?

I don't know if upside is what I would call it.
Hansbrough is probably close to capped out talent-wise. His production could improve, probably somewhere between what he’s doing now and what he did during that insane stretch last March.
I don’t know how much I like it, but Tyler might need a few more minutes per game. West could use some rest and I sure trust Tyler more than Lou and Pender.

No. He's a psychopath

He is what we need
if you subtracted the crazy from his brain

that's my main concern about him.
he’s like Artest lite. You just never know what you’re going to get.
Depends I think....
What kind of deal would we be looking at taking on? Would he be expensive and such? I mean if it isn’t too bad, I’d take a gamble. If you look at the team chemistry we have, I really don’t think one guy is going to break up that cohesiveness. Seriously. Those dudes are ALL on the same page. Even pine riders can’t stop smiling and jumping around with excitement. They are all feeling it. All J.R. Smith would do is come in, and pack a nice punch offensively and defensively. He’s super athletic. Can score in bunches sometimes. I think he’s an awesome perimeter defender. He always does really good on Kobe. He’d fit right in skill wise. If he got to be a problem you say bye, and we still have a heck of a squad at our disposal. J.R. Smith would be enough of a name to shoo him away next year. Some team will want him. Everyone knows he’s trouble, yet teams are still clamoring right now…. He’s a valuable commodity, and I guarantee Larry will be in on it at least. I think it’s a little bit of a gamble, but a no brainer. It’s kind of like holding on 16 or 17 in Blackjack. It’s in in the rulebook, but it always makes ya a little nervous. Most of the time it’s in your favor though.
JR Smith
I am on the fence with him for many reasons. I would prefer W.Chandler but thats a 8-9 mil per yr back up to Granger and West at times. So then I thought of Arenas as he is available, but that thought made me sick real quick. I was thinking JR Smith during the lockout how he would be a destroyer off the bench, but I be damned the 1st time he has an OFF game and his minutes decrease he will ruin the chemistry. Thats just JR Smith for you. But with our lack of puch/knockout blows from our bench he is sounding a little more of a better option to keep this machine rolling. He would cut in D.Jones’ playing time and Jones has been playing alright lately. If the money is right and Foster and West can shove his ass into a trunk for a few hrs when he does misbehave I’d say sign him for the yr. IS THERE ANYBODY ELSE WE CAN HAVE THOUGH? Trade Tyler for J.Hill or P.Patterson????

ahhh Jordan Hill
Not sure what Houston thinks it can get for him (Patterson would probably cost too much), but I’m not sure if we shouldn’t wait for Tyler to work his way out of his slump. At the very least, even when he’s not scoring, his craziness/aggressiveness is a pain in the a** for other teams to play against.
Seems like he's playing the way I've wanted/expected as of late.
Shooting about 7-9 shots per game at a stomachable 40+%. But then doing all the things we love like making people pissed off and just frustrating opponents.
That’s all I wanted all along and I think it’s coming from him setting up 18 feet from the basket instead of posting up in the low block and asking for the ball…then getting it and not knowing what to do and letting help come and forcing terrible shots.
Facing up his game is still ugly, but it seems to be more comfortable to him and forces attention rather than letting defenders put a quick body on him and then backing off and letting him defend himself by not knowing how to score with his back to the basket…now he’s getting people in space and making them react to his off-the-wall antics.

TH = your favorite, obviously
not surprised to see you’re still using all those nasty adjectives to desribe TYLER’S play but it seems you’re begrudgingly giving him some type of convoluted praises? has he improved that much? in your inimitable style, i know you’re truly happy that HANS is getting out of that slump and will be leading the team deep into the playoffs. please continue w/the entertainment, cutter!!!

If we signed Smith and a quality backup big.....
Don’t get me wrong. Teams are noticing. They are already not looking forward to meeting us in the playoffs. But if we signed J.R. Smith to come off the bench, and he panned out….AND we got a quality backup center that could give ya some quality minutes…..We’d seriously be a force.
Noooooooooooo!!!!
Don’t trade Tyler, he’s just in a slump, we’ve all seen how well he can score. Trade Jones or Price if anybody, we need someone to back up Granger, another scorer to take over when Hansborough or Hill is slumping.
Tyler is in a slump. He will be fine.
He always plays better when he gets involved early. His teammates will have to help him out there.
I think we should give Jeff Penedergraph more playing time over Amundson. I think he can give us more offense than Amundson. He does the hustle thing and I believe his offense would be somewhat better. As far as JR Smith goes, I also hope the Pacers at least consider him. Outside of his maturity issues he brings what Bird hoped OJ Mayo would contribute.
JR Smith pushing us past Chicago and Miami...
…the East would be ours to loose? That’s a bit of a stretch. IF he worked out ok and Jeff and Hill came back into the fold, that could remove Amundson and Price completely from our lineup and put Lance in a role of just getting a few garbage minutes here and there.
Yeah, if all that can happen we could beat anyone, but that’s alot to ask along with continued smart movement on offense, strong intense defense, AND good shooting. Yeah. We could beat the ’96 Bulls if all that went in our favor.
Well, more to the point. I’d sign JR for a big chunk of one year money if he doesn’t like the long term deals he’s getting.
If his Chinese team makes a long run in the playoffs (which might be tough if JR isn’t giving full effort) then he could be out there on the market in early March. If teams are for some reason low-balling him on long term deals and he wants to go somewhere for big short term money and it doesn’t look like we’ll be able to do much else with our cap space…then heck yes we sign JR. Why not? We need some scoring and he’ll bring that. If he’s messing up the flow, we bench him and keep him from hurting us on another team until the end of the season.

Amen to that!
As long as he is willing to come off of the bench
