Rolling the dice: JR Smith
To gamble or not to gamble? That is a question I often find myself pondering. Being the weak man that I am, I usually push my chips into the middle and ride the wave. With JR Smith returning to America the Beautiful this week, it's seems that Larry and Morway are faced with a similar conundrum. Over the past few years, they have built a team that focuses on defensive commitment, sharing the ball on offense, and taking open shots. If Mr. Smith's career up to this point indicates anything, it's that he shrieks and melts like the wicked witch of the west when faced with defense or smart shot selection. Nevertheless, he provides something we are both sorely lacking and publicly coveting: a scorer who can create for himself. Moreover, he has the upside to be better than anybody on our current team. THATS RIGHT, I SAID IT! BETTER THAN PAUL GEORGE! Blasphemy, I know. In reality I'd put my money on PG too in that race, but that doesn't take away from Smith's potential. If you don't believe me look at his highlight reel. Some of the things he pulls off are downright jaw dropping. But that brings us back to the problem. He's a player who has been accused by George Karl of only trying to perform highlights at the expense of his team. He's been branded as selfish and unwilling to buy into a team concept. My question is do we want him?
If it were up to me the answer would be a resounding yes. Given this post is probably fueled more by our three game skid than by objective logic, but these past few contests have been terribly frustrating. Our bench without George Hill has no ability to maintain or extend leads. Moreover, I cringe nearly every time one of our wings decides to drive the lane, waiting for the ball to both miraculously and inevitably pop out of their hands into the lap of an opposing player. I long for a player who will take it to the rack and dunk on someone. Maybe the best part about JR Smith is that we don't have to give anything up for him. He lists us along with the Knicks, Lakers, Clippers, Bulls, and Magic as his potential destinations on Twitter. Out of those teams we are the only one under the cap. Therefore, we can easily offer him the best contract. In my opinion, we should give him something similar to the Crawford deal, which was 2 yrs. 10 mil with a player option after the first year. I would be amenable to possibly increasing this year's salary by a few mil just to sweeten the deal. We have the money, we have the roster space, we have the need. Is there a possibility that he completely ruins our chemistry....of course there is. But we aren't winning a trophy this year anyway so lets double down with an expensive but flexible deal and hope that we hit the jackpot.

Nice post!
I’m completely biased here, I say no because I can’t stand Smith, and I never have been to. He’s just like many of the Washington Wizards players: capable of jaw-dropping plays, but a ridiculously low bball IQ when it comes to team ball. If only Wilson Chandler were the unrestricted FA, if only…

Mixed
Yeah I was big on Wilson Chandler until he has made it known he is going back to the Nuggs. I said something about Smith a few weeks ago as Ive been ranting the whole season that the day will come b/c we lack another bench player besides Hill that can take over and score. We cant trade for anyone so might as well sign JR if he will come. If I was Larry I would be checking into a Patrick Patterson. The guy can play back up at both forward spots.

when you have been in the league 7 years, you can no longer look at potential
he is what he is at this point
www.themindofshadow.blogspot.com/
You’re right. What I meant by potential was consistency. Unlike Lance or even Paul, he has shone the ability to take over games and be the best player on the floor countless times. What he hasn’t shone is the ability to consistently use his talent to benefit the team over himself. When I said potential, what I really meant was the potential to consistently use his abilities to maximize the team’s benefit
I love it
I really like the idea of JR Smith in Blue & Gold.
David West seems to have this team’s head straight. I’m not worried about chemistry. He would fit perfectly on this team.
Plus he seems to be interested. His @TheRealJRSmith sub-headline says: NYK? LAL? LAC? CHI? ORL? iNDI?
David West
Will keep this team chemistry intact along with Foster. JR would be a good fit to play back up along with Hill and Tyler..IF Tyler’s not traded by the deadline.

Although!!!
I am convinced the Pacers/Larry Bird are stuck with the roster we have to let it ride on through regardless of wins/loss’. I dont have the confidence I had for the team or the organization to make ANY moves while other teams pass us by. Maybe next season. We’ll be a year older…Don’t know how much better, but we’ll be older for sure…make the playoffs and get knocked out in the 1st round.

Bird was on the radio a few days ago
seemed pretty adamant he didn’t intend on letting this year’s cap space go to waste if something that made sense presented itself

Haven't we discussed this already?
No f*cking way. He’s a g*ddam* psycho.

jr smith is a
high risk, high reward player. he may not be as combustible as that guy formerly known as ron artest but he is capable of imploding. but when his head is screwed on right, he can contribute immensely. question is, which jr smith will show up most of the time. hopefully, if we do sign him, d west, foster and danny, to a certain extent, can contain him and he can prove to be a valuable pick-up. but judging by the way bird picks his players, good character and no head cases, i’d say the chances of us signing jr smith are the same as lebron saying “i’m taking my talents to area 55.”
I Forgot who it was on twitter but....
A writer for yahoo quoted a source close to the pacers said that they are going to pass on JR when he was eligible to return to the NBA. This came out when Kenyon martin signed with the clippers
everyone was wondering about Aaron Brooks, Wilson Chandler, & JR.
Wilson Chandler is planning on returning to Nuggets but his team is in the playoffs so WC wont be back till about mid march if not later
Keepin it KFC as always (Kool, Funky, & Clean)
Indiana should really make a run for Smith this year. If this doesn’t pan out, he can be a good trade asset come off season. Indiana can offer him the best deal money-wise and the best playing minutes. Perhaps our young SGs could learn a trick or two from him.
Come on Larry get JR and dont make half-hearted effort to land him
Desperate Moves
are for desperate teams.
No Thanks!!!
I can't agree to accept a guy with known problems with his mental state and consistency.
If Smith were younger I would probably overlook his problems. However, J.R. has been in the league for 7 years and is now 26 years old, that passes my ‘he can change’ standard.
