LET BE HONEST HERE DANNY GRANGER IS KILLING US!!!!!!!!!!!

First of all I have to say I truly like our team this year. I feel we have a great chance to make it to the 2nd or maybe 3rd round in the playoffs this year if things work out. But we have one major problem to fix before that can happen and that problem is Mr. Danny Granger.

I am not sure what is in Granger’s head right now. Maybe he feels threatened with so many scoring options on the team. With West, George, Collison and Hibbert all starting with him he may be worried about his point production. Honestly I don’t know what he is thinking but he is extremely selfish in his play. In the 6 games so far this season I cannot count how many times he has put his head down and drove to the basket within ever looking up to see if there is someone open and his shoot selection is awful. In this scenario I believe he has already his mind that he is going to put it up even before the ball gets in his hands (it’s painful to watch as a fan of team play). I once saw both Collison and George open on the wings and Granger driving to the basket without looking he forced a hideous shoot up that missed the rim completely and I saw Collison and George look at each other in disgust.

Now the bigger problem with DG selfishness is that our team needs leadership from its veterans. I believe Danny does not have the team’s best interest at heart. He seems to me like a player trying to pad his stats. I hope the Coaches are making him watch game film because he must be watching 2003 tape of Kobe at home. MESSAGE to DG, you are not Kobe period. Kobe avg. something like 30 back then and shoot around 47 percent not 32 percent avg. 15 points. His selfishness is hurting us in many ways it’s making his teammates a little selfish seeing their leader hogging the ball. I hope the problem gets fixed soon even if Bird has to make a trade!

He needs to improve

His scoring average has gone down for the last three years. His confidence seems to be following. And now that we have more scoring options, he needs to be the stellar 20pg guy and he’s not. It’s not that the scoring load should be shared, rather the scoring load needs to be more consistent.

Also, it’s only a few games into the season. Danny is the man. And I respect him. He’s a great shooter. He’s not Kobe. But, he’s also not a loud, badass, stupid, look-at-me player. That’s a good thing.

LETS BE HONEST

Everyone back away from the edge. Its six games. Relax. Everyone is freaking out because we haven’t played so well, but with no training camp and barely any pre-season, its too early to freak out. And yes, benching our best player is officially freaking out.

Couldn't agree more

I stopped watching the game at halftime, not because we were playing bad, but because I couldn’t watch Granger play anymore. As soon as we went down 8, he comes up the floor and jacks up some jumper with 19 on the shot clock. Next possession, catch and shoot from 3 range with 16 seconds on the shot clock. Then he runs over Chalmers and gets called for a charge. The guy just implodes sometimes, and I cannot watch it. He’s not an All Star, he’s a 3rd option for most teams. He scores because he shoots too much. He doesn’t move the ball, and as Paul George gets better, Danny is looking more and more like a trading asset. (Cough Eric Gordon Cough).

Benching Granger

Benching him would only send him the message that we don’t want him and then we would get zero production from him. Give him some time. He will turn it around after he get use to trusting his other teammates.

by AndyLS on Jan 6, 2012 4:24 PM EST reply actions

If he’s that much of a spoiled pr!ck, then we better find out now by benching him. Because if he is, then he doesn’t belong on this team!

by FortWayneKarl on Jan 6, 2012 4:51 PM EST up reply actions

If he’d respond that way to a benching – then I believe he would be the only player on this team to act that way, and he does not at all deserve a space on our roster and should be moved ASAP. I know the league is full of selfish prima donnas – but that’s not Indiana basketball like Larry Bird is trying to build here – and I’d be all for finding out sooner rather than later or living with it. I’m sure we could get a decent backup center and a first round pick or two for him should he SHOW HIMSELF TO BE SUCH A PR!CK.

by FortWayneKarl on Jan 6, 2012 4:57 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think that Granger is a prima donna

He is certainly not an Allen Iverson. I think that he would play off the bench, but to take him out of the starting lineup now would be a disservice to him considering all that he has done for the franchise over the years. I think a better option would be for Vogel to tell him that he will start, but if the selfish play continues then he will be benched immediately.

by AndyLS on Jan 6, 2012 5:59 PM EST up reply actions

After tonight, it's a bit easier to not come on here and continue the rant.

Still, he had some pretty post-rookie-contract-Danny moments, especially early on.

I couldn’t suggest benching him without knowing how he’s being coached and how he’s responding to it, but if he’s taking shots when we are supposed to be running set plays or just moving the ball better, then he could/should be benched. If he responds poorly, but with a decent attitude, then put him back in the starting lineup and see if he got the message. If he didn’t, then shop him. We are young and cheap enough we wouldn’t have to get much but some cap space and a late 1st to make it acceptable to me.

The more prefered thing to happen though would be that he could just get a little better at passing, continue his improved (versus the last couple years) defensive intensity, improve defensive rotation, and WAY improve his general decision making. All that stuff is true for all of our team, but he’s the elder statesman of the starters, so it’s more important that it begin with Danny.

Would be nice if Tyler and Roy could handle a pass. I feel really bad for PG24. He’s made one or two really nice passes to either Roy or Hansbrough the past 3 games that they either bobbled to the opposition or out of bounds.

Granger for Joe Johnson anyone?

by Logdog2804 on Jan 7, 2012 1:44 AM EST reply actions

yeah lets take in a 30 year billion dollar contract

due to ridiculous fanposts

and joe is shooitng a whopping 38% go along with this horrid contract.

by dbcb on Jan 7, 2012 7:47 AM EST up reply actions

Thats true.

Just looked it up. Forgot about how ridiculous that contract is. I think he would give our offense a more effective scoring option at the 2 and then PG could move to the 3. He isn’t shooting well right now, but if he were on the Pacers he wouldn’t be pressured to shoot as much as he is with Atlanta. The offense would be more balanced….

Just throwin it out there for arguments sake, but yea not for that contract.

Let's wait until they Amnesty him....

…which may not happen this season. But, I could definately see him being amnestied sometime in the near future. I think with his passing ability he’d be a great asset, and would make Danny even more expendable. But, Danny seems to have the ability to be a better defender (like Danny can be a solid defender and Joe Johnson doesn’t seem to be capable of defender much at all).

However, at this point, I’d rather see Danny improve his passing ability and not bother competing for Joe John in the post-Amnesty FA market. Atlanta didn’t Amnesty anyone did they? They’d be stupid not to keep that get out of jail free card for JJ.

The answer is so clear now.

We HAVE to kill Danny Granger. Just so I can stop having to see these stupid rants.

True, but it's an improvement

Granger’s play has gotten much less selfish this year, and it’s helped our team. Although he takes too many shots, he’s been looking for that extra pass more often. Also, his defense seems to have stepped up this year. His play’s getting better

by ColtsDevotee on Jan 7, 2012 3:53 AM EST reply actions

I'm a huge Granger critic but...

I don’t think he is playing for stats. He has just developed a lot of bad habits over the last few years and can’t yet compute the fact that there are better scoring options on the team now, especially with the way he has been shooting.

He has worked on his handle but his drives are too one-dimensional and he’s not a finisher. His post game is mediocre. He needs to realize he is best served as a spot up shooter and cutter. I have seen him make a few good passes this season, mainly to Hibbert, but he has also taken far too many bad shots. His pass to Collison today was a very welcome sight. His defense is okay as he gets steals and blocks but struggles mightily against elite offensive players.

As long as the Pacers are winning and Granger is hitting shots when it counts (which he has been), we should give him the benefit of the doubt. But definitely, he needs to take a good look in the mirror and at his teammates and try and make his team better, not just him.

by knuman on Jan 7, 2012 4:30 AM EST reply actions

The worst thing about these threads

is that people keep saying stuff like “he is bitter there are more scoring options on the team!”

Come on guys… where does that come from? Why such hate and made up bullshit?

And no, there are not better scoring options on our team if danny is shooting his usual 42-45%.

Danny is in a huge slump and he is doing what shooters do when they get in huge slumps… he is trying to shoot himself out of it. The fact that he is shooting 35% from threes but only 30% over all is telling me he isn’t taking the worst shots in the world… he is just missing them.

by dbcb on Jan 7, 2012 7:45 AM EST reply actions

He's getting forced into some bad situations too.

There were a few times where he got the ball late in a shot clock just this last game and as a result he had to take a contested shot.

I do think he is close to getting out of his slump though. I just feel like his jump shot was looking better this past game.

I just don't understand the hate for Granger these last couple years

It is like people expect him to be in the Lebron-class of small forward when he obviously isn’t and never will be.

I mean, where are the threads talking about how bad Tyler is playing for instance?

the Tyler posts are being saved for

when he starts playing worse than Granger…….

Granger

Hansborough

12.6 ppg 7 rpg 1 spg 37% fg 27 mpg

Thats Hans platooning with David West, so imagine his #’s with the starting reigns at his position

He only avg

21 minutes a game last year at 11/5
But his 36 minute totals (starter clock) were 18/9

moot point as his play has significantly declined since these posts and is easily getting out played by Granger (tho hes playing 4 minutes less a game on average now too)

Tyler plays 'D'

Danny is capable of playing slightly better positional ‘D’ than Hansbrough, but at least Tyler always does (his team ‘D’ isn’t so hot yet).

I think both can be capable of playing winning defense in the schematics of a team.

I think both are capable of playing winning basketball in a team dynamic.

Now they just need to swallow their pride, listen to their coach, and just do it…they’ve proven they can in spurts.

Agreed

Both have the potential to be much better players..We’ve actually seen that with Granger already

We can

tho its taken Granger until his 7th season to develope a strong D (8 game sample size), while in his 3rd season Tyler is showing hes close to where DG was in his 3rd season.
