14 Million rental this season
Do we need Chris Kaman? Obviously, we need a back-up center. But is Kaman the answer? Not sure who NOLA would want in return but I'm assuming it might include Tyler and a draft pick or other combinations that would allow them to get young players. At any rate, I think the Pacers should at least inquire but think hard before pulling the trigger.
"The New Orleans Hornets are actively trying to trade center Chris Kaman, who was not with the team for its home game Friday night against Orlando as the league-owned Hornets field trade calls for him.
The Hornets have decided to shelve Kaman until they can find a trade home for him after making the decision to give his minutes to young players. Kaman had been made inactive for Wednesday's loss at Oklahoma City even though he's not injured.
"We've informed Chris that we are looking into possible trades and he was understanding about the situation," Hornets GM Dell Demps said. "We're working together on this.
Kaman, who turns 30 in April, is making roughly $14 million this season. He became the oldest player on the Hornets' roster after being dealt with guard Eric Gordon, Aminu and Minnesota's unprotected 2012 first-round pick for Paul."

I will vote YES on this, btw
Kaman is worth it. He could be a legit backup for now, and in combination with Stanko, a legit long-term solution if Roy goes elsewhere.

I agree and disagree.
He will be a good back-up for now but not a long term solution given his injury history and he’s not getting any younger so this is probably going to get worse.
I voted yes in your post only because i think it will help us this season. I want to see first what NOLA’s asking price is. If it’s a 2nd rounder plus cash, why not. But if it includes any of our starters and George Hill, my answer is no. I’m torn about Tyler as of the moment.
I agree.
We could hardly go wrong if it’s a second rounder and some cash (I don’t even think we’d need to include the cash though).
Between Pendergraph (who knows what he’s going to do), Foster and Kaman….someone will have to be healthy enough to keep Amundson off the court…right? And maybe this will allow Hansbrough to focus on getting his mid-range spot-up game in practice and shoot arounds…don’t think Hansbrough needs to practice the contributions he’s giving now…crazy, insane energy…that seems to come naturally.
As much as we need a good big man to backup West and Roy, I wouldn’t give up much to pay Kaman’s remaining $10mil. for his backup role.

Not Landry
They wont part with him BUT they may be willing to add Jack if we give up Tyler also. Rather have him at this point to back up the 1 & 2 spot

Nothing to lose
We have nothing to lose with a 1 year rental.. I am sure that we will make a move to use up some of this space, and we probably won’t want to tie it up long term unless it is a stud player with all of our extensions coming up.
Only problem with this is that it might limit our ability to upgrade in the back court, which is equally needed
apparently, NOLA wants a young player plus a 1st rounder.
That’s according to hoopsworld’s Susan Bible.
Here’s the quote:
Joe
Where does Chris Kaman and his expiring contract land? He would certainly fill a need for the Celts or Warriors but it’s hard to see who they would get in return.
Susan Bible
Sources name Jazz, Rockets, Spurs and Pacers as possible trade partners. Apparently the Hornets want an unprotected first round pick this year and a young player for Kaman.
Problem with NOLA is it'sNOLA.
From what I have read, NOLA can be a nightmare to trade with. I still remembr the league-rigged trade they pulled earlier this season.
Did the league own them when we got Collison?
That was a pretty good deal for us, not terrible for NOLA, but not so good for the Russian Presidential hopeful (or was that before he bought the team?)
If that’s the price…guess what? They’ll be sitting Kaman for the remainder of the season.
I don’t get any of those teams beside Pacers.
Spurs- As mentioned above (or in the other post) they don’t have the cap room to absorb Kaman and they don’t have any bad contracts that they could off load combined with a pick and young player.
Jazz- WHA??? They have 4 bigs with more talent than Kaman (Jefferson, Milsap, Favors, & Kanter). Al Jefferson is listed as DTD, maybe they fear he’s not going to be able to play most of the season? Still. NOLA would have to absorb D.Harris or else trade Al Jefferson. Neither of those players meet the “Young” specifications. I just don’t see why Utah would be interested even if they had a bad contract to move.
Rockets- This one is close to being feasable. Moving Thabeet and Johnny Flynn would almost get them enough salary moved to take on Kaman. But Houston would still have to include Dragic or T.Williams or Courtney Lee to even get close enough to make the cap numbers match. That’s alot of young marginal talent to give up for Kaman…assuming you also have to include an unprotected pick. Here’s the catch. Houston owns NYK’s pick, but it’s lotto protected. The Nets own Houston’s first round pick, but it’s also lotto protected. They don’t have an unprotected 1st round pick. Ultimately, I don’t see them coveting Kaman enough to give up a 1st rounder either and they’d need to send some higher 2012 contracts (all are non-gauranteed beyond 2012) to make the money work which doesn’t save NOLA anything this year.
I read that Cleveland is also interested. They are already several million over the cap. They’d have to trade all of their backcourt depth aside from Irving to make space…or some of their backcourt depth and Varejao….or Antwan Jamison and a young talented player and a 1st rounder.
If you ask me. It’s all BS. NO WAY are they going to get an unprotected 1st rounder and a young player. But, if there’s a team out there, looking for big man depth with bad contracts to move…maybe. The question is whether NOLA will take on longer money for moving him if they also get a 1st rounder and a young player….
I just don’t see it. I think we could offer Hansbrough and a 2nd and it would be better than anything any other team would offer. And I’d do it. But, Bird might not b/c Tyler WAS his “See, I know what I’m doing” pick…though Roy has been more than enough to prove Bird’s bullish, upper classman technique and Tyler is hurting his arguement at this point.

i am torn about tyler.
still want to see what he can do maybe until a week before the deadline.
about that 1st rounder, not sure who we’re going to get in the 20’s of the draft. if it’s a so-so player, trade if for kaman?
but if we can use our 1st rounder to get someone younger, better and more durable like Mayo, I say, trade Tyler and 2nd rounder for Kaman and use that 1st rounder plus maybe Pender or Lou or D. Jones for Mayo. This will probably move PG to the 2nd unit with Hill, either Kaman/Tyler, Lance or Price with Foster eventually.
come to think of it,
1st rounder even in the 20’s may still snag a player better than Mayo. Cheaper too. Hmmmm……
Better? Doubt it!
Cheaper? Without a Doubt!
I've been watching alot of college ball....
…since like 2008. This is a good draft class. If we keep this cap flexibility till the offseason we can use that 1st rounder on a guy to upgrade the top 8 of our rotation and still sign Mayo…or someone else in the summer AND if their out there and teams are low balling we can sign two solid rotation guys this summer by slightly out bidding MLEs.
We’re in a good spot. But it’s going to take patience and disciplin to get the right guys and save space for Roy, Collison and maybe West…and still keep PG24 without going WAY into luxury tax hell.
peac.e
Why can't we
just wait to the end of the year when he’s an Unprotected FA to sign him.
More importantly, it gives Hansbrough some time to once again prove the doubters wrong.
i think it's not a question of just signing kaman but more of
signing a quality b-up center now before it’s too late.
Kaman isn't going to command tons of money.
So, I agree. But at the same time. For a fan that’s always looking to the future, I’d like to see this season given that kind of “smart” balls to the wall, short term win now kind of managerial effort.
peac.e
Does kaman play the 4?
If he does, that would surely help us this season especially if we lose Tyler.
He can knock down face up 12-15 footers.
He can throw some hard fouls. Considering he’s our backup PF and C…I’d say yes.
Dalembert can’t reliably knock down face up jumpers from anywhere, but could play center with West/Hansbrough, and play defense on PF while Hibbert gets a low post breather on the defensive side when we face teams with only one low post threat….but I keep saying I’m not going to hark on the misstep of NOT throwing Dalembert a bigger deal than Houston. And I still keep harping on it.
