Changes are needed in the Pacers rotation
So I'm sitting here flipping back and forth between the pacers/celtics game and the heat/knicks game and the biggest thing I'm noticing is how poor our rotation is. Listen, I get the whole "goon squad" motif, i think its cute and a little appealing to the fan. The problem with the bench though is that there are huge chunks of the game where there are 5 bench players on the floor at the same time. in contrast the Heat keep two of their big three (Lebron, Wade and Bosh) in the game at all times. now I understand its a grueling season and peoples minutes are limited but why can't it be possible to mix and match some of these guys in the first unit and second unit. In my opinion there's no reason why either danny, west and hibbert can't be in the game at all times. Just a thought.....especially after these last few games where the bench has contributed next to nothing.

I agree.
I’ve felt this why as well. Jeff Foster is sorely missed. Now that Chris Kamen is available, I think the Pacers will make a strong run at taking him for basically nothing. The Hornets get rid of him, which they want, without taking on any money.

OK Look
If we can get Kaman for the remaining of the yr then OK. Seems like he would be a solid off the bench behind Big Roy. Foster to me, is done. Yeah lets save him for the playoffs and only play 16 games during the season…..What Playoffs…we’ll be lucky if we made it then if we do its one and done. Then, if the Kaman project works sign the dude a min next season. Wilson Chandler is who I have been lobbying for since the lockout was over.

Didn't realize this...
…but apparently Denver still has the right to match any offer for Chandler. Looking at their roster and cap situation, I don’t think they will. I’m all for offering Chandler a little over MLE to fend off some of the other teams that would be vying for his services. If we can get him for 25-35% less than Granger…not petitioning for trading Danny…but if we could get a guy like Wilson Chandler for a reasonable contract it would give us some nice wing depth and some more flexibility with what we can look at doing with Danny in the future.

Danny in the future
is also Team Captain of the Indiana Pacers
I really hope so.
His defense this season…and his shooting as of late??? It’s going to be hard to argue trading him. West has been the leader and emotional spirit of this team to this point. Team captain? We need a level headed vet to be the captain. We can get that on the open market and offer them a reasonable contract…for half what Danny is earning in the future…Antwan Jamison, Jason Kidd, Andre Miller, Steve Nash, Kevin Garnett….those are some of the 2012 FA that have the voice and reputation to command respect. I don’t want anything to do with their old overpaid asses nextseason. Danny Granger can have the title of team captain, admiral, lance corpral…don’t give a shit. He isn’t a leader.
None the less. If he can play like he has lately? Knocking down shots, playing killer on ball defense…and then learn to trust his teamates enough to pass a little better and learn how to work through screens on both sides of the court to get open looks on offense and contest jumpers on defense…if he can do that???…he should be nearly untouchable despite his growingly undeserved contract…b/c if he can do that…it will be deserved.

Kaman would be a solid addition
A big man that can actually score & rebound is exactly what the 2nd unit so desperately needs.
Hey...Here's an Idea
How bout we sign Wilson Chandler mid Feb when his Chinese league is done. We should pursuit him and if Denver wants to do a sign & trade say bye to Tyler and send him off to the Nuggets. Yeah, shoot me down as some has done but it seems more and more and more and more apparent we need a top notch well balanced player to back up at the wing….Wilson Chandler???!!!! The cat is 6-8, 235lb. You know he is in shape b/c he avgs 25pts, 15 rb’s and 3 blocks over in China. Yeah I know its not the NBA but he was doing good stuff for New York AND Denver before the lockout. Hell, he can even play some back up 4 at times with a good post up game. Pacers gotta do something – something more positive than whats happening now.

No Way!!!!
Getting rid of Tyler is a really bad idea, he is just in a slump and even Lebron and Kobe go through those. Tyler is a top-notch player to have come off the bench. The only trade we need is Dauntay Jones. Give us someone who can back-up Granger and can create plays.
I agree.
Two of these 3 need to be on the court at all times:
Danny, Hibbert, West, and I’d say if only one of them is out there with PG and bench players, one of those bench players also needs to be Hill.
I really, REALLY wish Tyler was still playing affective offensively.
The goon squad worked b/c PG was scoring fairly well, Dahntey wasn’t quite such a ball hog (and wasn’t getting the ball quite as much) and Tyler was scoring points.
Right now, if we just have our bench out there and Tyler isn’t scoring (which he’s been worthless) then all we have out there is fouls, turnovers, fumbly-bumbly hands that lose 50-50 loose balls and rebounds like 90% of the time and 30% shooting…at best, and that’s if Hill is shooting fairly well.
It’s pathetic. I know we just lost one game, but we really have no depth at any position besides maybe gaurd…and that’s only b/c Hill can play two positions. D.Jones is ok at the wing, but only if we have at least 2 other better scoring options.
I know there’s nothing that can be done now, but I’m totally going to keep pounding this ‘I told you so’ drum. We should’ve signed Sam Dalembert. He could play 25mpg backing up Roy and playing a little PF. Roy has been good, but he clearly looked worn out tonight even before the ankle issue. He needs to stay under 30mpg and if we are playing well enough, he should get even more rest. I fear that West will get worn out as well at this rate.

We need a real backup PG
whether its A Price or not.. its clear that Hill and Stephenson are not options for the point. Either give Price a shot or lets get someone to actually play the 1 with the second unit
Totally agree
Every game I watch, I understand the fascination with Lance less and less. I’m unimpressed. He’s not a 1 or a 2; he’s not an NBA player.
I don't think Hill is the problem really....
…It’s that when he’s out there as the PG, it’s often with some of the worst NBA players in the league.
Is he a great backup 1? No. Is he even a good backup 1? Not really. However, he can bring the ball up and if you watch the first unit, Collison doesn’t really do all that much facilitation.
I would say our needs are thusly, 1. Backup C, 2. Pure scorer/shooter in the 2nd unit, 3a. Backup wing that doesn’t JUST defend ok and take bad shots, 3b. Backup 2.
So, while I agree, Hill is not ideal. I think we have more glaring needs.

Barbosa
He’s a dynamic player that can score in bunches without needing a ton of minutes. He ‘s been a bench player his entire career so he won’t need too much money and it shouldn’t be considered a threat to DC.
Can't agree
Stephenson will be a great point guard and possibly could even take DC’s spot. Remember, this is really the first year he has played a lot of minutes. He just needs to get comfortable. Hill may be hurt right now but he is a scorer. Price and Jones need to go!
Hill is a scorer.
Agreed. But, you actually think that Lance will overtake DC? You actually think Lance is a pure passer and a legit point guard? You must be very young….or a Cincy Bearcats fan, or from Coney Island….or something.
That’s just silly.
If you are talking WAY down the road, maybe you see something I don’t, but if you are talking this season I think you are in need of a major reality check.
peac.e
I’m probably older than you whipper snapper, lol. No I’m not saying Lance could take his spot this year, he is still in development but a year or two later, absolutely! His passing skills are supreme, that is one of the main reasons Bird likes him so much and with his size, OMG, he could dominate every point guard in the league on the post. His defense still needs work and his shot needs a lot, I will concede to that but his passing IS pure.
Disagree, but I guess I'm in the minority
Everyone is saying that we need a 2nd unit wing scorer.
I think that Hill could be that guy, he is just being miscast as the backup PG. If we had a real backup point, then Hill would be able to play off the ball and that’s where I believe he would have more success (although I have no stats to back this up).
Our second unit guys have some talent, problem is that they have no ball movement at all. At least with the first unit you have Collison, West and Hibbert who are pretty good at moving the ball
I think you are very close to hitting the nail on the head.
Our 2nd unit doesn’t move the ball OR move without the ball. It would take a world class pointman to have the dribble-drive-dish/score capabilities to get defenses collapsing enough to get what should be our key second unit scorers good looks.
I think Hill has about as many deficiencies as a SG as he does as a PG. I think he’s a solid player, glad we have him. Like him better than Kwahi Leonard (so far), but he’s clearly a bad type of tweener. The good kind is like Tim Duncan who can dominate at two positions. The bad kinds are like George Hills and Al Harringtons of the world. They belong in the league and can contribute, but they aren’t big enough to be completely reliable at their bigger position (SG in Hill’s case, or PF in Baby Al’s case), and not skilled enogh for the smaller position.
Anyway, got a little off track. The key is ball movement and Hill is not ideal as a backup PG, but it would take a good starting quality PG to get the second unit good looks and I’m still not convinced they would shoot efficiently. They just aren’t good scorers. They’ve played some with Collison and they still aren’t good scorers…but, they’re who we got and it’s on them to get themselves better shots and MUCH more importantly look to pass out of bad shots.

Foster the key
It has been evident that Foster is the key to the 2nd unit——he set picks and motivates all to play harder——Hill is a player, with a high basketball IQ, and needs minutes..
stephenson is still learning, but at the teams expense, I prefer Aj, with hill at sg for the two unit, george at 3, th at 4, and that is as good as it gets. DJ, is a good backup to George at the 2, but to put him at 3 with tyler and x at center——all we are going to get is Stephenson trying to improve, and he is, Hill trying to play a role with lessers players, tyler trying to force it to make the second team work—-and dj trying to be the go to guy——and wo Foster, the 5 is a black hole.
So we are back to rotations, without a solid 5 backup we are a little hamstrung, and both west and hibbert will wear down. Too bad no Mcroberts! A cheap and fun fix at this moment!! The players have to be put in position to succeed and fit in with the talent on the floor. The second team has no identity yet—-and without it will continue to struggle.
I think Hill at point, Lance at shooting guard is perfect. People are not giving Lance the time he needs, remember they didn’t get much time together with the team before the season started and George may lack a bit of size but his shooting ability is great, his eye for the court is tops, and his knowledge for the game, well, he did come from Indiana after all. Hansborough is perfect and Foster is perfect, we just need someone to take Jones’ spot. Someone like an J.R. Smith
Ummmm....not exactly.
I mostly agree regarding Hill and Lance….but not sure what you are talking about with the bigs.
First of all Jones has played better than anyone of the people you just mentioned aside from MAYBE Hill. So he’s not the issue. Would I take an upgrade over Jones? Sure. Is he the biggest concern I have, not even close.
Hansbrough is perfect? 38% from the field 1.2 TOs to .5 assists (not that I’m too worried about his assist numbers). That’s FAR from perfect. Do I think he can improve? I sure hope so.
Foster is perfect? Perfect proportions to model fine mensware on the sidelines? I guess. I love Jeff, but I’m not sure what makes you think he’s going to be reliable this season.
We need some depth, and since Hill is likely to return sometime before the playoffs and Lance is more likely to improve than 29 year old Lou Amundson (who has looked better as of late)….a big man is our biggest need.
peac.e
I’m not sure which team you’re watching but Jeff is always a great defender. Hansborough will get his head right and turn around, he played well against Orlando.
Jones is my biggest concern, you never know what kind of foolishness he’s gonna try. We have plenty of bigs once Jeff gets back, that’s where they are strongest.
