Around SBN: NFL Owners Vote to Change Trade Deadline

Kyrylo Fesenko

I think it is quite clear that we have depth issues at the 3 and 5 spots. When Jeff Foster is sidelined our need for a better backup center is glaring. I respect Amundson's effort on both ends of the floor and his rebounding. Nevertheless, he tends to commit quite a few bonehead fouls and insists on trying to score despite his inability to do so. Despite reports that Fesenko was going to sign with Golden State, he is still a free agent. His reported deal was a one year, 1.07 million dollar contract. I'm not sure what made the deal fall through but we certainly have the cap and roster space to sign him to a similar contract without hurting our future plans. Honestly, I don't know that Fesenko would really be that much better than Amundson. From what I remember of him he excels at defending the rim but is offensively challenged to say the least. I suppose the thing that makes him worth considering is his size. He's listed at 7'1/ 280, so at the very least he would give us another giant and allow us to keep a 7 footer at our rim for the majority of the game. It's certainly a luxury to be able to complain about your 11th best player, but here we are, and my question is: Does Fesenko make us better and is it worthwhile to pursue him?

Yes

I was pushing for him awhile back.

Lou is more suited to be a 5th big man or backup 4 guy. While I love the effort, I feel he gives up too much on the defensive end, and seems to give up a lot of o-boards.

Fesenko would be much better on D, and there couldn’t be a ton of drop off on O, even if he does suck there

If this guy is so good why is he a FA?

good question

There were multiple reports of teams going to sign him during the short FA period but nothing happened.

I believe he was injured so maybe he is not fully recovered yet and teams didn’t want to take on a guy that wasn’t going to be able to play right away

I know next to nothing about this player

But I’ve heard a few people on here say he’s like some sort of world-class defender. So I have to echo dale here…why is he still unsigned? I don’t care. We need a body still, so I’d like to see them sign someone. 1 year and less than $2 mil for a legit 7 footer…I’ll take it to at least soak up fouls. If he can just stand in front of the rim and be taller than people he’s got one up on Amundson, who’s the only “big man” I’ve ever seen who seems to play significantly shorter than he actually is on defense. Don’t get me wrong, I like his effort, but dude just seems like basketball isn’t his thing.

Lou

Kind of reminds me of Happy Gilmore. . . he thought he was a hockey guy but couldn’t skate. . . Maybe Lou is a Rugby guy. . . Actually now that I think about it a little he reminds me of a Samuri Warrior!

But seriously I think we need his energy off the bench and I love the “Brian Cardinal” type of hussel players that feed on energy. I mean look how Cardinal’s energy helped the Mavs to the Championship. . . hell he even hit a big 3 for them. I like the guys that are just there to come in and beat on people.

I wish we could sign Dwayne Schintzius . . . He is my all time favorite Pacer . . . . He could give a foul like nobody’s business . . . And there would be no AND-1! Shaq would walk away from bruises from this guy.

I think it's a testament to how much you like Schintzius...

That you can actually spell his name, given your spelling history, which is spotty at best.

he should be a good back-back-back-up center.

he can spell hibbert and foster and amundson can spell west and psycho majority of the time and play 5 at times. so can pender.

thing is, i’m not sure if we’re better off signing magnum instead? i think he’s more atheletic although much lighter than fesenko

I don't understand what it is about Rolle that has people so interested in him...ALWAYS

I mean, hasn’t the statue of limitations on how long you should be inexplicably interested in a D-league prospect effectively expired on Rolle? Can we now move on to guys who we could actually call up from the D-League, like Famous?

Let's settle it the democratic way. Vote.

Whoever the bloggers think has the better name wins. All bloggers welcome.

Is it Famous or Magnum?

by denggoy7 on Jan 24, 2012 10:11 AM EST up reply actions

Seriously though,

I really don’t mind who we sign as a 4th or 5th big man off the bench. I just think we’re better off not signing Krylo. If we’re going to sign one, I just prefer someone else and Magnum just came to mind. Famous would be better than Fesenko also.

IDK

“Krylo” is a pretty bitchin name.

There Are No More Big Guys Left

Lets give our 2nd pick for Jermaine O’Neal and give him 10-13 mins. Hell, he can still block and get rebounds and redirect plays down low. IF Boston will give him up which was the case at 1 point.

This would have been a lot easier to do last year

JO is expiring this year, so salary dumping him on us only helps them save actual cash for the rest of this season, it doesn’t improve their cap flexibility for the future (because they’re going to be rid of him soon anyway). I’m not saying they wouldn’t consider it, but they wouldn’t have a ton of motivation to just help us out. I think JO would be a perfect addition. 15 minutes a night, soaking up the time Amundson and Hansbrough are playing out of position at center, would be ideal, especially against opposing bigs who draw a bunch of fouls like D12 will tonight.

Well Fesenko isn’t skinny and neither is 38 year old Greg Ostertag – I’m sure they’d both be happy to soak up 6 fouls a game for us. I don’t know what other than the fact that we have the cheapest f’ing owner in the entire league is keeping the Pacers from filling this big obvious hole in our team. I think the front office and coaches need to man up and tell Herbie to spend a million or two and quick.

by FortWayneKarl on Jan 24, 2012 5:03 PM EST up reply actions

Signing Fesenko does not actually cost Simon more money bc we are below the salary floor. It’s Bird/Morway who are keeping the roster spots open. Which is exciting in a mysterious sort of way.

by hilliard on Jan 24, 2012 6:41 PM EST up reply actions

Are we below the salary floor?

I thought Posey counted toward it, making us a few mil above the floor. Also, even if we’re not, how on Earth does signing someone not cost the person signing him money?

I believe I read something recently saying we are below the floor. Don’t have the links but I’ll look for it. It does not cost him money bc he has to pay a certain amount of money no matter what. If our salary is below that amount, then the entire teams salary increases in order to reach that floor. Therefore, if Fesenko gets paid 1 million or so, it doesn’t change the total amount of payroll Simon has to pay his players.

by hilliard on Jan 24, 2012 7:27 PM EST up reply actions

I’m not sure what the precise numbers are to the penny, but according to http://hoopshype.com/salaries/indiana.htm, we are about $14M+ under the $58M cap and nearly spot on the $43M floor when Posey’s amnesty ($7M) is subtracted from the Pacers $50M payroll.

by FortWayneKarl on Jan 25, 2012 1:21 AM EST up reply actions

Oops, my bad - Posey counts against the floor so...

Pacers are over the floor ($50M v $43M), but $14M+ under the cap. Still think Herbie is a cheap @ss! :)

Very Exciting!

With a little patience, come the trade dead-line, multiple moves will be made!
