The Indiana Pacers tip off a three-game stretch in California tonight when they face the Sacramento Kings.
The Pacers begin a phase of their schedule that should determine just how good this team is and if there is some substance to the early season success. Starting tonight, the Pacers play six of their next seven games on the road and they will need to rely on another strong defensive effort to keep the Kings from amping things up for some home cooking.
The Kings have tons of young talent that is trying to find their way after dispatching of former coach Paul Westphal early in the season. Indiana Hoosier legend Keith Smart seems to have their attention but the team is still 2-5 since Smart took over. Of course, the Kings have been navigating a harsh stretch in the schedule with their last five games on the road. Hard to imagine they won't be on point on their home court.
Here is the Pacers.com preview. For a Sacramento perspective, check out Sactown Royalty. Also, after the game check out Pacers Overtime on WIBC 93.1FM with Eddie White. Need to have an Indy Cornrows mention on the show!

Kind of important
Game tonight. If we win, it would mark win number 10, which would be great for this team.
Need these cheap wins
Before we go into the fire of the west
Immediate portion of the schedule
Past Golden State (which worries me) is @Lakers, Magic, @Bulls, @Celtics, @Magic. So I’m certainly not concerned about the West as the West. The limited number of games against the West helps curb that concern. But that’s not going to be an easy five game stretch. 2-3 would seem like a victory.
But one good thing about this stretch is I look forward to Dwight Howard just randomly saying he wouldn’t mind being traded to Indiana to be on that exclusive list of 15 other teams he wouldn’t mind being traded to. Would make me feel good inside even though he’s just talking and doesn’t mean it.
Last Season
Didnt we make each and everyone of the King starters look like all-stars last season??
Man, I remember them thumping the hell outta of us at home and at SAC as well?? We need to frustrate the hell outta of Cousins to get him tossed. Hope West/Paul/Hill/Hibbert show up HUGE tonight and take them out early by the 4th qrt. Pacers win another ugly one 101 – 91

Ugh, Indiana got ganked by Nebraska
Nebraska! (I’m glad I was even tempered on the Hoosiers this year)
My PU friends are rubbing it in my face. I missed the game, but looking at the score, it looked like IU gave the game away.
Hopefully this will humble them and get them to play hard for every minute.

It's funny because even though Indiana hasn't won a National Champiionship since, what 87?
They still made it to the title game in 02. So, they can’t say much about that…
They really did give it away
Up eleven with about five to go. No excuse to not come away with it. I figured they were humbled by Minnesota, further humbled by Ohio State, but I guess they aren’t done being humbled yet. There probably should’ve been a foul on the last place as Watford was being held, but Jordie nearly hit the three at the buzzer falling over the scorer’s table.
They’ve come out on the right side of close ones a lot this year, so it only makes sense water finds its level.
I’m sorry, but Marshon Brooks has been beasting all season. Man, I like Hill, but I would have loved to have traded down a few spots and got this kid. He can get his own shot and is showing he can shoot at a high clip. That’s what we need.
I wanted Marson or Reggie Jackson heading into the draft.
Still, Hill is pretty good, so we still made out.

Orlando goes down
Indiana takes care of business tonight and they will be alone in second place in the East. I’d like that.
I'm watching the ATL and Portland game,
what the heck is Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn doing at the game? Probably shooting a movie, but that’s so random…
Can't believe IU dumped that game to Nebraska
and OKC lost to the Wiz. Strange things brewing tonight…
Does anyone here live in Indy?
How is everyone going to get around? Esp if you work DT, that would suck.
FYI - PLEASE DON'T POST LIVE STREAM INFO OR LINKS
It will be deleted. I haven’t been vigilant about this in the past but have to be going forward. Thanks for the cooperation.

So did Orlando. I’m not sure what the Bulls’ record is right now—but Indiana might be the two seed. Right?

Franky V doing a GREAT job sharing minutes.
Pacers have won of the best load-sharing MPG’s in the league, with DC baring most of that at a mere 33 mins a game. Next close is David with 30, and everyone else in the 20s. You gotta like that when the Bulls starters are all at or over 40 MPG. Gonna do well for us in the long run.
I think this game could get out of hand early.
I know the score is still close, but they don’t seem to have any sort of plan and we are scoring fairly easily at the rim.
+1
That and our defense around the rim has been great so far.
could also see Thornton gunning his way to 30 points and keeping it close
"He's like Darth Vader." - Frank Vogel on Larry Bird
We need to watch them behind the three point line and watch the offensive boards. We’re giving them a lot of second chances so far.
hope they keep it up
On league pass they just showed a graphic displaying that the kings were 2nd in last in 3pt% but 2nd in attempts
Seems everytime we make a half court pass it ends as a TO

… what other Center that’s available will have his ability?
Glad the Pacers are pushing the pace
but those two turnovers on what should’ve been easy fast break opportunities can’t become a trend.
The Lou - Tyler frontcourt
leaves alot to be desired defensively
Good move.
It’s okay when he misses those, because at least they’re under control.
We lead the league in missed layups

If a guy is a sub-par to mediocre player, of course his strength will shine through, often more so than it should.
Yeah but it's his court vision he's referring to.

I always considered him an elite passer, a great dunker, and a very mediocre everything else. There’s a place for a guy like that on a team.
I agree that he is, in general, a mediocre player,

I don’t get why all of you hate on Dahntay so much. Any team would be lucky to have him. He does a lot of little things on the court.
It seems like this is discussed in every Pacer thread:
Pacer fans like certain things about Dahntay—he provides certain things that all good teams need—but he should never touch the ball.

Would we consider...
… making a trade for that guy Brandon Rush on the Warriors? He’s a great wing player, and I think he’d add a lot to our team. Possibly him for George Hill straight up?

They would never take Hill and a 1st rounder. We’d have to sweeten the pot.
West is such a pro.
Did you see him wink at Dahntay, then purposely miss that free throw? Great play. lol
That needs to happen.
Because our bench just sucked it up all over the floor. They look baaad.
I guess to appease Cousins...

West is showing some good moves.
Nice to see him gain in confidence on that leg. Ups his game, and he’s so strong that he’s hard to guard in the post.
Pacers playing terrible, Kings playing well = tie game.
That’s encouraging. We need to turn up the intensity. Teams can’t compete with us for an entire game.

Unfortunately, our MO is beating people senseless in the second half.
You’d like to see that all game long. Perhaps it’s part of Frank’s strategy? Lull the opponent into a false sense of security, then burn them up in the second half? Yeah? I like it.

Our FT shooting is helping us IMMENSELY.
We’re second in the league in FT%, and with Sacramento shooting 30% from the line tonight, that gives us a huge advantage.
By my count
11 second chance points by Sacramento.
But it’s also late, so I probably messed up somewhere, haha.
as soon as a kings shot goes up, at least 1 player in white is rushing to the front of the rim, while the man guarding him just watches the shot go up.

Cousins owns that turf inside the block/charge circle
hard to believe Pacers are up 4, giving up 17 ORebs

I've always said the same about Dwight Howard
If he had half of Shaq’s (or Hansbrough’s) mentality, he’s be the greatest center in NBA history.
They don't make players like Jordan anymore
All the talent and determination. Kobe probably the closest thing.
I don't really like Kobe, but I think I like him better than Lebron
forget any of the off court stuff, but Kobe goes in eff you mode and Lebron is…more worried about his brand, it seems.

I distinctly remember HATING these two announcers last year when they played in Indy.
Maybe that had something to do with the fact that it was such a lousy game for the Pacers. They’ve been pretty good tnoight.
Also undefendable
It’s an option. Guard the cutter, Roy is one on one with his man in the post. Double Roy, pass it to the cutter. Simple but brilliant. Can only do it when you have the legitimate back to the basket post threat in hibbert.
Some player bumped into the Marshall coach
And the Marshall coach goes down, starts crawling around and flopping like Manu.
Marshall head coach faked a heart attack to get the ref's attention.
Apparently some player on the other team ran past and elbowed him, so the coach dropped to the floor and flopped around clutching his chest.
That was a dirty move.
Like kick returners standing in the end zone like they’re not going to run, then taking off when the coverage team slacks off.
Big Boy Roy
Nobody can get to Hibbert really tonight. He’s playing well. But then again, so is everyone else.

It’ll be good to play a tough team on our court.
Paul isn't quite as automatic on buzzer beaters
As he was last year.
Am I forced to accept it was an anomaly?
Granger is moving SO much better off the ball.
You want to see him do that more often. Get some Reggie in his legs.

I know
But he still had not opportunity to finish because the opposing coach walked way out on the court and stopped play before he could
Not sure if that applies to the clear path ruling.
But I know very little about it. In fact, I didn’t know it existed before two years ago.
Oh, interesting.
Really wanna see that, because with his crisp passing that could happen without blocks.
proud to see granger just walk away after the block lol

Question!
I see people blog on here about how they hate Danny Granger. Why is that? I mean he really isn’t a burden. Granted he’s not the best leader on the court, but he is a very efficient player.
I don't think so.
I think people think that because there is a bigger point spread with everyone on the team.
He's been shooting low 30%.
Can’t argue that.
Because he has false front teeth.
It’s that simple.
It's not like Cousins has a great offensive game.
Sometimes I think he’s rather dribble the ball behind the three point line and run iso for himself. Lou just needs to make sure he boxes him out.
by dustinpurvis on Jan 18, 2012 11:48 PM EST up reply actions
I like it when he dials his own number.
Especially when he takes it to the rim.
Ok!
I agree Danny is efficient when he doesn’t get T’d up.
Why isn't Thornton getting T'd up?
Every single time he gets down the floor, he’s stamping his feet and throwing his arms around.
DC!
He’s on fire. I can feel the burn all the way here in Muncie.
You at Ball State?
I was just there yesterday.
A LONG TIME!
I need some sleep at one point.
You know, if you look at Sac's roster, they're a really deep team.
A ton of young talent. They just look so mentally unstable and whiny. It’s not just Cousins. If they could mature a bit they could actually make a little noise.
Does that play make Lou the best post player we've ever had?
Maybe. Time will tell.

actually not that bad of a movie
although I think my slightly positive review was due to low expectations
do you ever get the impression that some guys don't jack up hopeless buzzer beaters so it doesn't hurt their shooting %
Yeah, Quinn Buckner talks about it.
When he played he said guys would openly state that they weren’t going to mess up their FG% with poor half court and full court shots.
Cuz then you turn the game into a sprint.
We start out jogging, then take off to finish it out. If we started sprinting in the first, we’d run out of gas. Maybe.

Thing is...
… it’s the simplest defensive coverage, but teams in the NBA really struggle against it.
everyone was afraid to shoot
passed up a number of decent looks, PG especially looked afraid to take an open 3 down the stretch… just hitting one woulda probably made the difference
that's a bit rough
but he really should have put more effort into stopping the run early in the fourth rather than let them play it out
He's been terrible all year
Pacers only have a winning record from playing bad teams with tired legs
Pacers don't deserve to win this one
Maybe they can learn something from it
OMG, that was awesome.
Would have worked if he was smarter.
On the second free throw
Danny threw it at the rim to bounce back, but stepped over the line before it hit the rim.

Free throws ended up being 41 to 27 Kings. I feel like the Pacers had a giant free throw discrepancy in the first half.
Anyone know where I can find a box score that breaks down halves and/or quarters?
Well....the good news.
This team isn’t 10-3 good. Probably better not to get our hopes too high.

I don't think that's necessarily true
They lost one game on the road to a team desperate for a win. It’s not the end of the season.

but if the hawks arent “good” and the c’s arent “good” we only have about 15 games against “good” teams on our schedule so it should be a hell of a fun season
Proud perpetrator of yelling "Money MIke" at Oracle Arena since Dunleavy's trade to the Pacers.
I don't disagree there.
But, we are gauranteed to face a “Good” team in the playoffs.
And we proved tonight that we are more than capable of losing to average-to-bad teams.
15 games against good teams (we win a couple of those), and 10 or so more losses to lesser teams….that’s .600ish….er go…. our current pace was misleading and I was starting to believe the hype.

That's true
I’m just reacting to comments of other people acting like this is the worst thing to happen in the history of the franchise.
bingo
indytoad is obviously patsr18anddone’s retarded inbred pet hamster and is trolling hard, but everyone else needs to settle down. is okc’s season over because they lost tonight? hardly.
Proud perpetrator of yelling "Money MIke" at Oracle Arena since Dunleavy's trade to the Pacers.
That's what I'm trying to prevent.
And that’s what I’m saying. We are not OKC. We can beat most teams, most nights. But, we don’t have the talent to just put the pedal down and beat anyone. OKC, Miami, maybe Chicago. Those teams do.

story of our seasson so far.
win 3 or 2 than lose 1. not a bad exchange
There are a lot of circumstances that will make this season WACK
It’s a long season compressed into short. It is concerning to see blown leads like this.
It's gonna happen.
I’m surprised teams haven’t zoned more often. Sacto is maybe not as bad as we all think. WestPaul never had control of that team. They have loads of talent and actually got a practice under Smart. Plus the refs weren’t on our side.

And Cousins
Who just had a fucking crazy-good game. I have never, ever seen a player so dominant on the boards.
We needed Foster.
Hibbert is playing well, but West is very planted on his feet and the rest of our bigs have the worst hands in the league….and are small too boot.
peac.e
Yep, Jeff was missed
Amundson tries, but he just can’t seem to get those 50/50 boards going his way.
Considering this was a 37-win team last season
I’d be happy with 35 wins out of 66 games
That's about what I predicted at the begining of season.
I’m thinking if we can stay healthy (including Foster) for almost the whole season….35 should be closer to our floor than our ceiling….but not much.

Why would you not drive and kick to hill?
Dude is on a roll. Definitely our best shooter. I say we would of won if they benched DG in the 4th quarter. Oh well, still much more aggressive this year. Go Pacers!
Granger has been pretty decent late in games...
…especially compared to early in games. Plus his ‘D’ and level headedness.
A big concern was PG and DC hyperventalating with the lead crumbling and making a couple bad plays. I mean it never should’ve came to that, but they had a couple turnovers and DC had a bad shot or two.

Also, why take out West?
The Pacers had a couple of plays in the last few minutes where they beat the zone and made it to his sweet spot, and acted like they forgot Vogel had benched him. I know Sac went with a small line-up, but the guy is money in the clutch. Did he foul out or something?
He only had three fouls.
I’m noticing in the box score, though, that Hibbert only played 26 minutes. He finished with five fouls but I don’t remember him being in foul trouble all night.

We were ahead by enough most of the 2nd half...
…we were getting him rest I assume.
As to Stew’s comment. I think Vogel was trying to match the Kings speed or something…but I would’ve slowed it down. We were making mistakes playing too fast.

FTA in the fourth quarter were 15 to 4 Sac.
That includes a defensive three second tech and Danny’s final two free throws on an intentional foul. The discrepancy was 28 to 10 for the second half as a whole.
Normally I don't blame the refs
But, beyond the FT discrepency, the officiating did seem pretty lopsided in that game.
Don’t the Maloofs own a Casino with a sports book? Just saying?

spread was indy minus 6 to 6.5 10 minutes before tip
kings wouldntve had to win to cover
Proud perpetrator of yelling "Money MIke" at Oracle Arena since Dunleavy's trade to the Pacers.
I was kidding.
But, I’ll admit, I rarely blame refs for a loss. But the officiating in that one was increasingly lopsided. Ever since that Hibbert block where he probably got some forearm before getting to the ball (can’t even remember who he blocked…Thorton maybe). The one where Smart got the tech on the fast break.
It seemed pretty even before that.

Peace out fellas (and ladys?)
We should be able to get GS….we better. I was predicting 12-8 by the end of January a couple weeks ago.
I’m sticking with that.
