Reports the Monte Ellis offered for Granger

I found this link at hoops-nation

http://www.hoops-nation.com/monta-ellis-to-be-traded-for-danny-granger/

What are everyone's thoughts on this? I personally believe Golden State would have to sweeten the pot to get this done. Ellis plus their 1st for Granger .. and I'm still not overly sold on it. That would leave us with a very small guard rotation except for Lance Stephenson. This is what we'd be looking at

PG: Collison, Hill, Price

SG: Ellis, Stephenson

SF: George, Jones

PF: West, Hansbrough, Amundson, Pendergraph

C: Hibbert, Foster

I still think we'd need another guard for a short season and a lot of back to back games especially with injuries. What are the thoughts?

I hated this idea a year ago

His deal’s a year easier to stomach now. I still dislike it for the same reason you mentioned; it makes us too small in the backcourt, and Ellis plays ZERO defense. But he’s the scorer this team desperately needs, and allows George to become the definitive SF of the future, which is probably where he’s most comfortable. Plus he’s slightly cheaper than DG yearly, and younger. With the way Granger’s been playing defensively lately I’d probably turn this down straight up, but if they sweetened with a protected first or something, I’d consider.

Agreed

If we got their 1st with Ellis I think i’d do it … b/c we’d have 2 1st round pics for a deep 2012 draft .. one a high pic and one a low pic in the round. A lot of interesting trade scenarios with that … I’d personally like Gordon more than Ellis but we really need a scorer

by actionjack853 on Jan 16, 2012 1:02 PM EST up reply actions

Ellis lead the league in steals...

…so I don’t think you can say he plays no defense. He just plays, undisciplined, selfish, inconsistent defense.

Of course I’d consider it with a draft pick. It saves us $5mill. over the next two seasons (assuming that hoopshype is correct). Alot of people might think it a no brainer for a team struggiling to score.

However, the way Danny is playing defense now, I’m willing to wait on his offense to come around in hopes that he’ll be the player we need him to be in which case he’s a better value than Ellis.

I don’t really see how they’d want Danny. I’m not sure (aside from his improved defense lately) that he’s much of an updgrade over Dorrell Wright at this point and I don’t know if either of them are ideal SGs. I just don’t see how that works for them…I can see the advantages for us…but I’d rather keep my fingers crossed that Danny comes around.

antoher hoopsword rumor?

I think hoopsworld has a secret page where you can enter lame trade scenarios and it churns out a form article. Remember when they announced the mayo trade last month?

by indycrr on Jan 16, 2012 1:01 PM EST reply actions

This was hoops-nation not hoopsworld

I saw parts of this article as well at iamagm.com and espn.com as well … it has legit sources just curious if we’d do it straight up or more pieces … I hope NOT straight up

by actionjack853 on Jan 16, 2012 1:03 PM EST reply actions

I wouldn't do it at all.

We need more depth at the 3 spot not less. And I would rather acquire a good 1st rounder or a young guy that we can groom to take over for Danny in a few years. I would sincerely hope that this rumor is more about setting the barometer for Danny’s trade market value, than getting a deal done.

by indycrr on Jan 16, 2012 1:08 PM EST up reply actions

IF we got their high 1st round pic with Ellis I would do it … George moves to the 3 position and we can get depth through the draft of off-season … is Ellis ideal? no but with those parts I’d greatly consider

Grnager means a lot to this team

I don’t think a ball dominant one dimensional player like Ellis is going to replace Granger’s value to this team. I say we let Paul George and Lance Stephenson cook for another year before we decide to shuffle things up. There will come a time when we have to make a tough choice about Danny, but that day is about 2 years down the road.

The team we have is cohesive, focused, and a legit 4 seed despite our weak link (depth at the 3 and 5 spot). This trade proposal is major surgery for a rather healthy patient.

Rec’d for the final line. I think that analysis is spot on.

by TrueBlue87 on Jan 16, 2012 4:12 PM EST up reply actions

Don't be ridiculous.

The only way that GS keeps their pick this year is if it’s top 7. I highly doubt we’d get a top 7 pick in this draft for Danny straight up.

Get real.

I would only do a deal if we didn’t lose any current starters . . . . I don’t think Ellis makes us better without Granger. I think we would be worse. But also they would not give up Ellis unless they where getting some legitamate talent in return.

NO!!!!

Ellis does not fit into who the Pacers are now. He would mess up the flow of the game worse than what Granger does and Ellis is way too small…He a shoot first play basketball 2nd kind of player. I think Granger is just now starting to get a better feel of how to play now and hes been on a Pacer team through the rough years and I think he is atleast worth the chance to be a good Pacer team…

I really don’t see why we make an offer to Agent 0. I mean if you can get the guy for a one year contract and you have space why not?

It's Just a Rumor--But

Sure, make the trade. We need someone who can score, and pass the ball around. Someone said he’s a ball hog??? Well, compared to DC, he’s a pretty good point guard, shooting guard, or whatever you want to call him. He’s averaging over 20 points per game and over 7 assists per game.DC hasn’t even been close to that since his rookie season. I like the trade cause DG isn’t playing very well this year. And, if we dont’ want to get rid of Granger, maybe we could part with Collison, and sweeten the deal—maybe Jones?

by RVANDY9 on Jan 16, 2012 1:46 PM EST reply actions

I'm not someone that's going to be foolish enough....

…to think that an explosive player like Ellis would make us worse (assuming he was just somehow magically added to the team). However, his assists/scoring is due someone to his ball dominance. DC is not a great point man…he’s not quite even a very good one yet. But, his assists and scoring are down…just like everyone’s numbers are down b/c we are playing a slower, more deliberate scheme now where DC isn’t asked to just dump the ball off to someone who will immediately jack up a shot.

Still, Ellis would be an upgrade over any gaurd on our team right now…maybe even PG….for now.

not a chance in hell. wouldn’t trade Danny for Durant if he was facing that.

please be careful when posting such rumors

I read it was sexual harassment. Sexual assault is a BIG difference. it would also be good when making such allegations to attach a link. http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gameon/post/2011/12/warriors-monta-ellis-sexual-harassment-lawsuit/1

I think I might trade Danny for Durrant....

…if Durrant sexually harassed my wife.

Just kidding. But if they threw a 1st rounder in there…and it was only verbal harassment…done deal. KD, Pacers starting Small Forward!!!!

Who are we kidding? I’d take Durant if he sexually harassed ME. It’s Kevin freakin’ Durant.

yeah but

do you really want to wade through the “Trade Durant” threads when he goes 15-40 in his first two games as a Pacer?

by DougInOz on Jan 17, 2012 2:18 AM EST up reply actions

this move would hurt the Pacers but...

It still makes them a playoff contender. My bottom line price would be Ellis and 2012 unprotected 1st OR Ellis, Udoh and protected 1st for Granger and Price and 2012 2nd

by northeast nightmare on Jan 16, 2012 2:50 PM EST reply actions

Be tough to protect a pick you don't own.

Their first rounder is owed to NJ (who I think traded it to Utah for D.Will) unless it’s a top 7 pick.

I really don’t think we’d get a top 10 pick in this draft for Danny right now. Given that he’s going to be paid, and maybe overpaid the next 2 seasons…let’s not forget his game has regressed for 2.2 straight seasons.

If we could get more out of the deal I would take it. I would love to see Paul George move to his natural position as a SF.

You don't win with players like Ellis

And our defense would go down the tubes, which is our calling card at the moment.

this deal would make us worse defensively

which is our bread and butter. ellis does not play d. besides, i thnk we should add more talent instead of trading talents. our starters are good despite the shooting woes. i wouldn’t trade our starters unless it’s for guys named lebron, dwight, kd or deron.

Dont Agree

Although Ellis is a dominate scorer we just do not need him. Plus Granger really fits in well with our style of play. Everyone thinks he is a problem but he really does help contribute to wins. Ellis is a bad person and would completely ruin the team chemistry. He is just another Stephen Jackson. We have developed a solid foundation with great chemistry and stability.

Usage Rate.

Monta Ellis has been on par with Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, and Kobe Bryant in terms of usage rate. He would ruin our offense with his ball dominance. He has a rather poor outside shot, thus failing to stretch the defense. He is an awful rebounder. He turns the ball over a ton. A poor defender. And, to this point, he is shooting poorly as well from everywhere.

Danny for his career averages more free throws at a higher percentage. Defends infinitely better. Is at least an average rebounder. Shooting appears to be on an upswing. Turns the ball over far less. Has the ability to stretch the defense and provides a great deal more versatility with his ability to play 3, maybe even 4, positions.

I will say that this deal would not just make us worse defensively, but offensively as well.

I'm not sure I disagree with the last statement.

But your stats are a bit off, atleast if Danny is your reference point. Ellis is shooting poorly, but not as poorly as Danny. Ellis gets to the line just as much as Danny. Over the past 3 years, his FG% is better than Danny. His turnovers are higher, but he’s been asked to do alot. His assists to Turnovers are better than Danny…ok, now I’m reaching.

I’m not in favor of this deal, but I will say that some are underestimating Ellis’ skills (I’m also a big fan of the $5mil. savings over the next two years). However, I do feel that Danny’s improved defensive intensity and size (and citizenship) allow him favor in this deal. The issues that I’ve had with Danny bogging down the defense…while I feel Ellis is more effective creating his own shot….we already have a combo gaurd that fits our “share the wealth and smother the opponent” style a little better in George Hill.

*Danny bogging down the offense....

I meant to say the issues I have with Danny bogging down the offense would be exasperated with Ellis…even though I think he’s a bit more capable of creating his own shots, especially before the defense gets set.

I wasn't comparing Ellis fg% with DG fg%.

I was looking at what I consider poor shooting, 40% isn’t good for anyone. Has DG shot poorly? Yes, but i feel he is coming into form.

I feel DG offers more to the “team” than Ellis.

Defensively the trade doesn't make sense

But offensively it does. If this trade goes thru I think the Pacers should take a glance at Wilson Chandler .

by GrangerSCK33 on Jan 17, 2012 12:28 AM EST via mobile reply actions

This whole discussion is stupid, and here's why.

We’re looking at the wrong pieces. What I’d be more interested in doing, and what I think people REALLY need to consider, is trading Granger straight up for another wing player that Golden State has – a dude name Brandon Rush. That guy is an excellent talent, and I think he’d fit in VERY well with our ball club.

Thoughts?

by Jmahoney on Jan 17, 2012 1:14 AM EST reply actions

Duuuuuuuude.

Do you think GS would be up for it though? We might need to include some picks. As long as they send back calendars for the next 10 years where every month is labelled march, I’m all for it.
