Anybody Interested in O.J. Mayo Again?

I see where Mayo is playhing better, has his shooting touch back, has been a great 'teammate', and has not been causing any turmoil within the organization, so for some reason, they are interested in trading him. Go Figure! Would the Pacers have any interest in him "again". I can't remember why we didn't try harder to get him once the league got started again, or if he just wasn't interested in being a Pacer. I think we could sure use him to help us with scoring. I know, I know, our team is playing pretty good ball right now, and why scramble the egg, but extra scoring can always come in handy, even if off the bench. Just think what our bench would be like if we added him, and got rid of say, Stephenson and Jones??? Just a thought. Any body else interested?

Only way they do it is a salary dump

They’d never trade an expiring contract for a headcase and an extra-year guy who’s MUCH worse than Mayo, especially when the two deals combined only saves them a couple million. I was just okay with this deal when it was the 2011 pick for Mayo…now that it would take a 2012 pick, no thanks. If I really wanted him (which I don’t), I’d wait for him to become a free agent and sign him; Memphis simply won’t/probably can’t match. Or, more likely, I’d draft someone better than him with my mid-to-late first round pick in the 2012 draft.

Maybe..

But Memphis will want a valued asset from us…Tyler, Hill. I can see them asking for P.George. If it was Jones/Admundson/Price maybe but i can’t see it happening. Would rather wait til the draft or try and sign Wilson Chandler when he is done overseas.

We need someone like him

but he can’t play the 3 and George can’t play the 1 so he doesn’t fit anymore.

And he wouldn’t be “free” anymore… trading mcroberts for him at the beginning of the season would have been trading nothing for Mayo. Not anymore.

According to ESPN...

He is a restricted free agent.

Not if they don't give him an offer sheet...

…Right?

I’m assuming they’d at least try to sign and trade him. But, at $7.4mil.(that’s the QO) I don’t know if they could risk offering him the Qualifying Offer to retain the right to match deals. He’ll probably get close enough to that, but for longer, that he wouldn’t waste time hurting his open market value by even signing the Grizz’s offer b/c that might bother some other teams knowing that Memphis has the right of first refusal. Even though I just can’t imagine they’d risk going into luxury realm to keep Mayo.

Shucks!

That changes everything.
Maybe Kaman & Diaw will suffice until 2013…who knows, by then we may no longer need him.

I hope your joking about Kaman and Diaw.

Why Not?

I believe their both Unrestricted Free Agents at yrs end and more importantly, their both substantially better back-ups then we currently have.

Sounds like a Win/Win to ME!

depends.

at what price? if memphis is willing to swap for either perdergraph, lou, price or d jones, why not? but if the asking price is other than those guys, pass. not even our 2012 1st. want to keep it as an insurance should something bad like na injury happen and messes up our playoff hopes.

Insurance?

Are we forgetting that this team currently has needs, and hasn’t even fielded a full roster yet? Also I think were overlooking the fact that several 2012 first rounders will be better than mayo. I’m w you, no way I pay for this guy

A plan

larry-joe and dave obviously have a profile of the players they would like to have, and mayo must fit it because they have tried a few times to get him. They are spending money wisely, so I wouldn’t expect a rash move. A scorer to replace dantay would be nice, so dantay can do what he does best, be an aggravating thorn to opposing players——-I like dj—-but he seems to think he is expected to be the scorer on the second team, which has him overreaching a bit. Something for nothing is the way I expect them to go——and if there is anything available at the deadline, or coming back, like chandler—-I would expect them to make a move then——and pray we keep injuries, especially front court ones, out or the equation.

My thoughts exactly.

With one caveat…I’m actually afraid that maybe at several points in the rotation…Dahntey IS expected to be the scorer on the second team…at least the wing scorer with Hansbrough as the post scorer. I like DJ too and think he gets way too much hate on this site considering how cheap he is, how healthy he’s been and really, played pretty well on both sides of the court aside from not being quite the scoring machine he thinks he is.

BTW...I'm not saying he should be...

…just that sometimes he is our best scorer in the 2nd unit. Now that Hill’s shots are falling though, I think that’s changing and I actually think DJ might turn down the Iso-man/shoot first mode a little bit…..I hope.

No trade for Mayo.

Not a pick, nor a player. Well…I’d consider Amundson or Pendergraph…but I’m already worried about our depth/quality at the PF/C spot (mainly center). But, losing Lou or Pender would only hurt the depth…not the quality.

With that in mind two items that any Mayo discussion should bring up.

Memphis has about $57million wrapped up in Z-bo, Conley, Gay, Gasol, Allen and their 2012 pick. They probably won’t be spending much aside from league min. deals to fill out their roster. I think they could Amnesty Gay (and maybe Z-Bo since I think he was extended under the previous CBA). But, I’m not so sure they will.

1. Why would we trade anything for Mayo when we could just sign him this summer. I don’t think he brings anything that Hill doesn’t in the same role he’d be filling. No point to give up anything for him now.

2. While we’re talking Memphis restricted 2012 FAs. What about Speights? I think he fills a much bigger need. I don’t think they’d trade him this season (may not be able to after just acquiring him). But, I don’t know if they can match competative offers this summer either.

Sorry

Don’t love Speights’s attitude, but I like what I’ve seen from him in Memphis so far. I agree that that is the type of player we should be targeting. If we stand pat, there are plenty of creator-type SGs in the draft who could slip to us. It’s not like we’re looking for an All-Star, we’re just trying to upgrade Dahtay Jones, which offensively, shouldn’t be hard. Yes it’s important to infuse more offense into the backcourt, but I’m with you that the bigger need should be a reasonably-priced, semi-effective two-way F/C, especially if Roy escapes.

That's what I'm thinking.

Starting to really buy into my own hype about spending the needed money to bring in Dalembert. Foster out two weeks….ok…maybe just resting? No. Procedure.
