What an "Amnesty Clause" Would Mean for the Pacers

[From the FanPosts, B-Huse makes a list of players they may hit the market with an amnesty clause in the new CBA. -TL]

First of all, what is an amnesty clause? An amnesty clause is a team being able to take one contract from its team and be able to drop them from their roster in order to bring down their overall cap. Of course the teams still have to pay the players every penny but the idea is that if there's a hard or harder cap that that team would be able to drop below the limit required. Several sources are apparently reporting that an amnesty clause is more than possible and maybe even likely for when the lockout were to end.

So the first question that comes up, who would we drop? The obvious choice is James Posey, but I guess some argument could be made for Brandon Rush or Dahntay Jones with our abundance of shooting guards. But the second question is, what players on other would be released and made available through free agency for much less? Here's my list:

Star-divide

Atlanta Hawks: Marvin Williams- It depends on how proud the Hawks organization is but it COULD BE Joe Johnson. Johnson is being seen as possibly one of the worst contracts in the league, but he is still the cornerstone of the Hawks. Williams has been a huge disappointment and makes over 7 million for the next 3 years.

Boston Celtics: Jermaine O'Neal- Jermaine was great for our Pacers, but his body is wearing down and there's not much left that he can do. The only other players left are the big four and Nenad Kristic and Kristic has been more valuable.

Charlotte Bobcats: Desagna Diop- Here's a player that Charlotte fell in love with because of his size and had small flashes in Dallas. One thing that the Bobcats forgot to check is if he could play basketball. Him making over six million for the next two years is pretty bad.

Chicago Bulls: Carlos Boozer- SHOCKER! How the mighty have fallen. The Boozer to Bulls rumors lasted for what seems a decade and they probably should've pulled the trigger a little sooner. Boozer's defense is bad and his offense seems to be fading.

Cleveland Cavaliers: Baron Davis: Fourteen million for two years on Baron Davis would've been pretty sweet in 2006. Too bad it's almost 2012.

Detroit Pistons: Ben Gordon- Here's another player that was scaring people in 2006 with averaging 21.4 points per game. Yeeeah but his 11.6 million dollar contract for a player making barely over 11 points per game is pretty insane.

Indiana Pacers: James Posey- The Pacers have done an amazing job at staying patient and not taking on bad contracts. There's really nothing much Posey can do anymore except jack up three pointers but he is only on one more year in his contract. But at this point that is the worst contract Larry Bird has right now.

Miami Heat: Mike Miller- This is only because I felt I had to pick a player. They may not drop anyone at all.

Milwaukee Bucks: Drew Gooden- He's been on a thousand teams for a reason and letting him have four years left on his contract when he's almost 30? That's probably not the best way to go. He has always been a nice piece, but hes not worth over six million a year.

New Jersey Nets: Travis Outlaw: Seemed young and promising.... now just seems sad and was the butt of Nets' fans jokes all year.

New York Knicks: Renaldo Balkman- Another player who seems promising but has ended up doing nothing. This would be the lowest salary to be cut by a team so far but he needs to go and the Knicks really don't have any bad contracts. Good job, Donnie.

Orlando Magic: Gilbert Arenas- Is anyone surprised? Really?

Philadelphia 76ers: Elton Brand- They like Elton Brand. But 17 million is for people you love, Elton goes bye-bye.

Toronto Raptors: Jose Calderon- He's a nice player, but he doesn't fit what the Raps are trying to do. He's making almost eight figures and it's time for him to go.

Washington Wizards: Andray Blatche- It would normally be Rashard Lewis, but he has a non-guaranteed contract after a certain time but don't ask me when. Andray Blatche is very talented but is hated in D.C. for his immaturity and unsound play.

Dallas Mavericks: Brendan Haywood- Brendan is 31, makes almost eight million this year, and is on contract for the next five years. Yikes.

Denver Nuggets: Al Harrington- Love Al, works hard, can be a great player to have. But cutting him just shows you how bad of a contract he really has.

Golden State Warriors: Andris Biedrins- This is the pick the Warriors SHOULD make but there's been rumors that they still love Biedrins after teams tried to trade for him. He's making nine million right now and is on contract for three more years.

Houston Rockets: Hasheem Thabeet- They were high on him and traded for him. I think they're having trade hangover right now and trying to remember why they did something so stupid last season.

Los Angeles Clippers: Ryan Gomes- Who else forgot this guy was in the league except Clipper fans? Yet he's making four million the next two years and the rest of the contracts on the Clips roster are solid or better.

Los Angeles Lakers: Luke Walton- I mean does he really deserve to make six million a year?

Memphis Grizzlies: None- That's right I said it...... none

Minnesota T'Wolves: Nikola Pekovic- This SHOULD be the pick, but with David Kahn you never know.

New Orleans Hornets: Jarrett Jack- He's just no worth five million a year.

OKC Thunder: Nate Robinson- The Thunder don't feel he's in their plans and is behind Eric Maynor and Russell Westbrook. 4.5 million is too much for a third string player.

Phoenix Suns: Josh Childress- I love the Suns' front office logic. They don't wanna overpay Amare, but would love to overpay players who don't deserve it.

Portland Trail Blazers: Brandon Roy- Ouch. Loved in Portland by fans, but after his knee injuries have almost crippled him they don't want to pay him over 15 million for another four years.

Sacramento Kings: John Salmons- Can someone tell me why the Kings traded to get Salmons when he can barely get on the floor anymore and make over eight million for another four years? Seriously if you've got the reason please write it below.

San Antonio Spurs: Richard Jefferson- He was sweet on the Nets.... and that's all I have to say.

Utah Jazz: Raja Bell- You know how many times I said the player was good five years ago? Yeah add one more. I almost picked Devin Harris but they need PG help.

Amnesty

If I was a player, I’d want to be the guy who gets released. Not only are you still guaranteed your original contract, but then you also potentially get a new contract on top of it. Not a bad way to go at all.

My hope would be that the Jazz would opt to release Jefferson, but probably that isn’t all that likely.

Pacers would be fucked

First, if this clause does go into effect, it legitimately fucks all the work teams like Indiana, Sactown, and Minny have put into their budgeting over the past few years. I know the fans of the Pacers have been waiting to shed contracts like Murphy’s, Dunleavey’s, Tinsley’s, and more for years and instead of getting to use that extra cap space to entice free agents, we get to watch LA and Orlando go under the cap in order to keep their stars. This is the first time in a long time that I’ve looked at the Pacers’ team salaries and had trouble finding one I’d like to drop.
Now, if this clause does go into effect, the obvious choice for this team is James Posey. Rush was a team option, so it’s clear they still have faith in him and I, personally, would love to see Dahntay Jones in the rotation for the next two years. It just really bothers me that the Wizards and the Magic could shed those ugly contracts so easily. Without this amnesty clause, I think the Pacers have legit pieces to make a trade for an All-Star a la New Jersey. With it, the salary space the team has saved up in rendered useless for another couple of years.

This doesn’t help make an even playing field, it further slants it towards the big markets.

I don't disagree it'd suck if they have it NOW after we've waited so long

But this doesn’t slant anything towards the big markets. ANY team can release ANY player. Teams would still need the capspace to sign the guys.

My question...

Would this ‘Amnesty Clause’ be a permanent rule or a temporary one to just allow teams to get under the cap?

I can see how this could favor larger markets if it becomes a permanent deal. For instance, this is hypothetical, Kevin Durant becomes a free agent and the Lakers want Durant. So, they see an old Kobe making $20 million, or whatever, they cut ties with him and are able to replace him with Durant without any trouble. I think it could potentially make free agency a bit less ‘free’ so to say.

Not a chance in hell it becomes anything close to permenant

If teams can do it every summer it’s basically a one year contract for any player at any time regardless of the terms the team and player agreed upon. The NBAPA is far and away the best union in sports, hell maybe just best union period, they’re not letting that happen.

Personally I’m completely against it, would be no matter what the Pacers’ cap situation was like. I see no reason why the union would or should agree to it. What the owners SHOULD do, and the union would (should) have a hard time arguing against in the public arena, is try and institute NFL style performance bonuses. Make the All-Star team, All-NBA, get X amount of boards/assits/steals/whatever. They already do it in a lot of contracts but they’re basically an afterthought, they need to become a major piece of any new contract. The bonuses are what entices the players, institute a floor (with some sort of injury stipulation), they don’t meet them the contract has the OPTION to be voided. Notice that it’s an option, not a given. Hopefully that would stop the slippery slope of players gunning for stats just to keep a deal. I realize it’s not perfect, but it’d be better than the way most deals are structured now.

although I would be opposed to this

it does offer up more free agents for us to peruse instead of focusing primarily on David West. Al Harrington or Elton Brand could be PF possibilities for a lot less money than they are making now.

Elton Brand on a 3/$24 mil deal would be pretty nice

Al Harrington can go play in Siberia. That dude’s terrible.

I think we could get pretty much any of these players for cheap. Brandon Roy, Elton Brand, Ben Gordon, Marvin Williams, Josh Childress and maybe even Jermaine would be nice for cheap. Oh and yes this would not be permanent from what reports have said. Having Al and Jermaine come back for cheap, limited minutes would be pretty cool. They’re really close.

What is this Al Harrington talk? I’m pretty sure even the guy who invented the saying “3rd time is the charm” is shaking his head relentlessly right now. He’s a tweener black hole who doesn’t d up. I’d rather give tinsley another shot….well, ok I guess I took that a little far. But we know Al provides nothing. We know that multiple times over.

cheap… maybe as a last resort if everybody else turns us down.

by Jamison1 on Sep 24, 2011 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the last resort should stop at McBob.

Anything past that would become a horrible signing.

Kings ain't amnestying Salmons I can guarantee that.

Why? They just traded for him which means they want him. Maybe they amnesty him down the road for reasons we’re not aware of now, but it’s not likely to be this season or next. That also matters if an amnesty lasts beyond a FA period as some have noted it’s possible an amnesty doesn’t last for much longer than the initial FA period.

No mistakes in the tango, Donna. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....

How exactly would an amnesty clause make the owners become more responsible?

The sole reason why we are in this lockout dilema is because of unwise ownership or front office decisions giving away bad contracts, to now award teams the right to hide a mistake under the rug would be downright hypocritical of trying to right the system. I love how we are having this lockout commotion based on what kind of cap system to have while at the same time the amnesty clause would be a complete loop hole around any cap. I for one, hate this idea.
