Pacers Hold Free Agent Workouts For Familiar Names
The Indiana Pacers brought in a group of non-rookie free agents to workout today and Tuesday at Conseco Fieldhouse. Ridiculous Upside has a partial list of players which is full of ghosts of pre-draft workouts past.
Former second round pick, James White is in to try and prove he can do more than dunk. Also on the list are several semi-notable players, including guards Bobby Brown, Matt Janning, Javaris Crittenton and Sylven Landesberg. The group of wings and big men joining White includes DeMarre Carroll, Ime Udoka, Rob Kurz, Leo Lyons, Chris Daniels and Trent Plaisted.
After a couple of years with little to no cap space and a rigid roster full of guaranteed contracts, the Indiana Pacers not only have their coveted cap space to work with but roster space as well.
Next year's version of the Pacers (please, please let there be a next year) will have to fill at least five open roster spots which does not include the non-guaranteed spot held by A.J. Price. Considering the amount of money available for free agent signings is unknown and likely limited, the Pacers will have a spot or two open for an inexpensive player begging for an opportunity to stay in the league or show they belong.

Actually sort of excited about a couple of those guys
Crittendon and Udoka especially. The Pacers backup PG rotation is so bad that I wouldn’t mind seeing Crittendon get offered a 1-2 year cheap deal to see if he can live up to the hype. He’s big, athletic and is only 23. As for Udoka, I remember his breakout year with Portland when he was a solid wing backup and a very good defender (earned him a nice deal with San Antonio if I recall). A one year deal for him, if he looks good in workouts, could be conceivable too if the Pacers have plans of drafting a wing and/or trading Brandon Rush.
"You're hitting the wrong person. Don't you know you're hitting Ron Artest?"
Come visit The Fantasy Ninjas. We'd love to hear from you.
I'm surprised to hear Crittenton's name
I loved him coming out of the draft, but I thought for sure he’d be blackballed by the league until the end of time. I’d definitely be up for giving him a shot (that was and remains unintentional).
I know it's just a workout
But hope Larry’s not developing a Donnie Walsh-like “can’t admit a mistake” like Bender and Shawne Williams. Even if Williams did knock down some 3s this year.
KEEP COACH FRANK
Wonder if
potential draftees are ignoring the Pacers and canceling workouts for us to bring in d-league players? Slow day but I hope we can get a few more draftees in whether they are second rounders or not.
