A man of his word... In Bird I trust

Like a lot Pacer fans, I eagerly awaited the trade deadline to see if we could get some help for the stretch run at the playoffs. I spent a lot of time at the ESPN trade machine looking at who may be available and what it might cost the Pacers to get them. Before the news broke about Mike Dunleavy's injury I had focused on PF's, then I realized we needed a SG because we had no one else that was ready to be a starter NOW. I tried a dozen combinations with the Grizzlies to get OJ Mayo and there was no way to get it done without it being lopsided for one or the other without a 3rd team. Larry Bird found that 3rd team in the Hornets. Who dropped the ball? We will never no for sure, but the likely scenario is the Hornets!  With Cuban rightfully complaining that a league owned team adding payroll wasn't right, they pulled the plug.  Larry has done everything he said he was going to do since he arrived. Don't dwell on what hasn't been done in the front office and look at what has been done. The Pacers are in a very enviable position going forward than most teams. The upcoming draft is the weakest one I have seen is years, if you are not picking in the top 10, you aren't getting an impact player. This will be the most active off seasons in the teams history. With plenty of cap room and more viable trade assets than anyone in the league, I am looking forward to whatever roster they will have in 11-12. Lets look at what the team needs with the current core.

Center: Roy Hibbert is a traditional back to the basket center and a mediocre rebounder. While he would be a starter on 95% of the teams, his current stats are about as good as they are going to get. Grade: B-   We will need a dependable back up and resigning Foster would be great.

PF: Contrary to the experts opinions, I think Tyler Hansbrough would be fine starting next year. Grade:B-    Of the FA's on the market this summer the only ones that are viable is *Zach Randolph and David West. The best overall value is Z-Bo. He can play the 5, is a double double machine. With a frontline of Roy, Z-Bo, Danny and Tyler and Paul coming off the pine... Wow    *(Zach dumped the posse that was clinging to him for his money and I think his troubles are behind him)

SF: Danny Granger... we all know the stats, he's good. Grade: B+  But he will never be able to carry a team, he needs some help on the frontline.

SG: By default this will likely fall to Paul George. Plenty of upside, still unproven as a starter and no decent SG's on the FA wire. Grade: C*       *= Could someday be an A... could someday be a D.

PG: Darren Collison, in his first year as a starter he has been up & down, yet in my opinion he is wanting to shoot more than pass. With the scoring options at his disposal he should be a double double machine. Give us 10 pts and 8-10 assists and everyone's happy.  He has that potential.  Grade C+

I can see scenarios where any of these guys could be traded in the right deals. There are no studs on this roster. But its gonna take acquiring a stud or two to take the next step. Bird will find the right deals to move the team forward.

Larry has done one hell of a job since the "brawl that ended it all", They were an elite team. and one game changed it all. Do you really think Bird wanted to break up that team? He was pressured by owners and fans alike, the same fans that yelled for his head when the team started losing. He didnt want to fire Rick Carlisle, he did Rick a favor by not having him to coach what was not going to be a very good team for a few years. Bringing in Jim O'Brian was the right move at the time. It just lasted about a year too long.  All the while he has stockpiled talent and assets and has them on the verge of being relevant again. I think the most relevant signing this off season should be by bringing back Larry Bird!

Does a smoking drunk still have enough to be our GM?

I think someone with more drive and business sense deserves a chance and that LB should stay on as a “special consultant” to evaluate talent.

So...

Are you saying he has made wise decisions regarding his evaluation of talent?

Pacers are in survival mode at the moment

Granger and Collison are good players who you could potentially build a team around. Personally i think Collison needs players that he can pass to.
The Summer will be interesting to see what the Pacers options adding new players to their roster.

I have to disagree about Collison.

I think it is the PG’s job to make the guys around him better and he hasn’t done that. It’s pretty clear he’s a scoring guard who needs to up his floor awareness. I can recall several occasions where he has just flat out missed guys for easy scores. I think it’s clear that he is talented offensively, but he isn’t amongst my first choices of guys to build around. sigh If only we could get Kyrie Irving.

I don't disagree that DC has below average floor vision

But with he and AJ both, they HAVE to score. Name a consistent offensive weapon on our team, you can’t.

Larry Bird turned Troy Murphy into Darren Collison

We should drop TJ and grab Magnum back.

I want Z-Bo bad

I don’t know the specifics about the trade that feel through, and considering West and Randolph were on the two other teams involved I have to think Bird was trying get one of them on the Pacers (otherwise trading McRoberts made no sense). This gives me great hope that he will pursue one of them this off season.

I also think that Nene wouldn’t be a bad third option if those other two guys fall through as he seems to be better at McRoberts at everything except dunking. Just as long as we don’t overpay him.

Also, the faster Paul George turns into the guy who creates something in late game situations the better. I love Danny but he is better playing like Rip Hamilton. Let him come off screens or cut and get the ball passed to him. He has been turning the ball over way too much when he tries to create his own shot.

i want zbo the basketball player

I don’t want zbo, the drug lord and idiot

I also want Zbo the ball player

But if he gave the franchise some of his drug lord money maybe they could pay off the loan faster.

95%??? That's about 1.5 teams that Hibbert wouldn't start for...

…seems a bit a of stretch.

There’s about 5-8 teams that Hibbert starting would depend on coach’s preference and scheme. But, I’d say it’s probably closer to 50-60%. The dude is still very, VERY slow. I love him, but he just is.

he collapsed on Nash who was in the middle of the lane

why no one on the wing collapsed idk. Was it a stupid play considering we were up 3? yes but you got to stop the ball in most cases… this just wasn’t one of them

I think we should champion mediocrity!!!!!!

I think its great that we win 30 games per year. I’d much rather watch a team that has to play flawless basketball to get an 8th seed in a pathetic conference. I hope Larry Bird stays forever!!!! Let those other sad sack teams have them fancy educated college boys run their teams. I just want the legend to drive this franchise in any wall, well or ground he sees fit!!!!

We're where we should be.

Solid core of young guys. Tons of cap space. A few veterans for leadership. We’ll be able to add a couple of key pieces over the next year.

I’m not sure what you think LB had done incorrectly. Other than B.Rush I think he’s made positive personnel decisions. Oh, you must be upset that we didn’t get Carmelo. I’m sure a better GM could have traded for him. No wait, that could’ve never happened regardless of who our GM was.

The Brawl happened 7 years ago

We haven’t been above .500 in 7 years. We are currently 5 under .500 in the Weakest Eastern conference of the last 15 years.

WHAT EXACTLY HAS BEEN DONE CORRECTLY BY PACERS MANAGEMENT?

It’s still a roster of bit parts and role players. We still need 2 guys better than ANYONE currently on this roster to even be fringe contenders. Why on earth should we be championing the job thats been done?

Rebuilding taks ALOT of time, especially when you have to rip apart the existing foundation like we had to do.

Think about the Colts. They were the bottom of the league from 1984 to 1999, excepting a couple of fluke years in 1987 and 1995. It takes time to get all the pieces in place, which is what Pacers management has been doing.

Plus, with the current group of AAU-based players, it’s significantly harder to get good players to come to a small market like Indy. The most important thing the Pacers can do at this point is continue to be smart with money and roster decisions and try to get fans in Indy excited about the young core which has been assembled.

by TrueBlue87 on Mar 5, 2011 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

Hard to get excited about...

…a bunch of guys in their mid-20’s (early prime years for most NBA players) that can’t win half their games. It’s hard to say how much Bird had to do with the DunMurph fiasco, but beyond that I think most of the moves are Larry all the way. In which case, he should run for office.

There seems to be two parties in the Pacers political world. Those who are willing to suck for a few years to build the right way (guess you can tell which party I belong to) and those who refuse to take any significant steps back while “rebuilding” around current “talent”. Bird has done a pretty decent job of straddling that line. Clearly his core constituency is the latter of the two parties, with his “we have a good core, we are just a player or two away from competing.” What most of us realize that those two players are Tim Duncan and Michael Jordan. Still, since Walsh has been gone, aside from dragging his feet to actually rebuild and making bad “Now” trades for potential future building blocks…Bird hasn’t made any terrible moves. The JO deal was fairly impresive. His draft picks seem ok. I’d have rather traded down (or out) of the late lotto and tried to pick up more draft picks or dump sallary to absorb some of those deals that expire this year that got moved last year along with picks in last years deep draft….(I know, 2010 draft isn’t looking that great, but trust me, it will end up being an above average draft).

Anyway, in Bird I trust…to ensure we don’t win less than 32 games. And if we’re lucky, we’ll probably win 35-38.

I still can't shake the feeling

That if the man in charge was ANYONE other than Larry Bird. This fanbase would have turned on them 3 years ago. But since its Larry Bird. A local legend. It’s consistently been someone else fault. Artest, JO, Tinsley, Carlisle, Walsh, JOB, DunMurphy, Posey, etc.

At what point is it fair to lay blame at the feet of the guy making the moves?
