I know I'm not the first one on IC to propose a deal that would land us Okafor, but the Pacers are not that far away from being a legit contender. Emeka is an all around player who excels in many aspects of the game. Looking at the free agent list coming up this summer, there are really not that many elite big men that would drastically push the Pacers into contender status. Now since the trade deadline is over, all player transactions will have to wait til late June. However the landscape of the NBA has had a complete make over with the East getting a lot stronger in the last couple of days. The knicks especially have basically a new team, but the knicks do not seem like they're done. with all the movement of superstars, the one player that hasn't been moved yet but has been reported to be discontent is Chris Paul. Chauncey Billups contract runs through this year and has a team option for next year at 14.2 mil. Billups can be packaged with some other minor pieces from the knicks to get chris paul. However, the Pacers have draft picks that the knicks need inorder for the hornets to bite on the deal. the Pacers send over 2011 first round and 2012 second round and another future first round along with either Mcroberts/Hansbrough, package with Brandon Rush and James Posey to match salaries in return for Okafor. Don't get me wrong, there will need many things to happen for this deal to work out. But in any case, the Pacers have to start pursuing Emeka more aggressively.
Emeka Okafor has played most of his time at the 5, but he is more than capable of playing the 4. Emeka is an elite shot blocker, consistent rebounder and excellent post defender. Combine him with Roy Hibbert, they make a vary daunting paint presence to any opposing team looking to attack the paint. Emeka is not a offensive minded player but has the size, strength and athletic ability to excel in putbacks and picknrolls. Okafor has been a consistent player that can be relied upon for effort and defense night in night out. With the possibility of palying a roster with Granger, George, Hibbert, Collison and Okafor, the Pacers have the perfect combination of size, strength, scoring and athletiscim to take them to the next level.
Even if we can't get the knicks in on the trade, we should still consider sign and trade with several of our own players and package that with several first round picks to entice New Orleans. This scenario is not as impossible as some may think, as the situation in the big easy is nothing short of precarious. The hornets are possibly one disastrous event from completely blowing up the entire team this summer. And hopefully the Pacers can be a benefactor of their loss, because Emeka will fit the Pacers better than any free agent this summer.
