Why are we in love with Nene?

Nene is a good player, don't get me wrong. But he is commanding over 10 million a year. Why is he worth that. Does this look like someone that should make over 10 million a year:

- He has never averaged over 15 ppg

- He doesn't have a back to the basket. post up game

- He has never averaged over 8 rebounds a game

- He averages one block a game

- He has never made an all star team

- He has a bad knee

Is Nene a good player? Yes. But why is such a gifted, huge athlete averaging less than 8 rebounds a game? Why is such a gifted, huge athlete averaging only one block a game? Why is someone with no post up game commanding so much?

Nene has peaked. He isn't going to get any better than he is now. Do we really want to pay 13 million a year for 15/8 AT BEST? And this isn't even getting into the fact that many (including me) don't think he will fit next to Hibbert.

Paying huge money for mediocre talent is how small market teams get stuck. I don't want to hand cuff ourselves when we are so close to relevancy for a player that is as limited as Nene is.

What say you?

Well...

Lack of interesting talent in free agency at PF. Market size hampers our ability to garner top talent, so we settle for lesser talent. Fits our need to a degree. Maybe it turns out he’s been playing out of position all these years… <<<<reaching here. He is efficient on offense…….. He is a fine defensive player, limited blocks aside. Has an unusual name. Doesn’t mind the cold (played in Denver). Has an interest in playing here? Agents are evil? This is all David Stern’s fault? This is all James Dolan’s fault? At least he isn’t Eddy Curry. Injuries aren’t much of a concern it seems, played 75 games or more for the last 3 years. He represents a shiny new toy? We can say to the other team’s fans, “Oh Yeah! Well, our front-court is bigger than yours.” “Size does Matter!” “It just looks like I’m compensating!” “No socks here, it’s all natural….” Is 7-2 natural?

Man

Are you and me the ONLY ones here that have love for Jordan Hill??? I know he’s not Nene, but the kid can play and play hard if given the opportunity.

I'd be fine with getting Hill

but it’s not like he’d make a huge contribution. it’d potentially be the same as finally giving McBob consistent burn.

just curious....

who do you prefer? gasol, millsap, west, humphries or someone else. can’t just stay put. i understand we need to spend at least 85% of the maximum cap otherwise we get penalized financially. i’d rather spend the money on a good player than giving it to the league.

by denggoy7 on Dec 8, 2011 10:08 AM EST reply actions

Why can't we stay put?

and rely on the growth of George, DC, Hans, Hill and Co?

I would much rather stay put than blow our money on mediocre players and get stuck being a 5th, 6th, 7th seed that gets bounced first round every year and then cries that “small market teams can’t win!”

But from that list, I would rather have milsap over the rest of them. He is cheaper and it would be through a trade and he is an actual power forward and not a Center we are putting at power forward.

Gasol is better than Nene as well

Did you say MILSAP

Man, everytime I mention Milsap (which I admit, its been several) there are a few that just rip me open and dont care to sew me back up. Absolutely for Milsap..the botha can play PF, yes, even at 6-8, 255lb with a 7+ ft wingspan.

personally,

i prefer gasol but he doesn’t seem to be interested and memphis might ak too much from us.

probably the answer is

he’s one of the few who have shown interest in playing for the pacers

by denggoy7 on Dec 8, 2011 10:11 AM EST reply actions

Really????

Nene has shown interest in us? I figured he was all about the big market now.

Good point

He was willing to meet with us, even if it was just to give himself contract leverage with Denver or some other team. It’s rare we get a big name free agent (even in a bad market) to give us a second look.

He has what Hibbert doesn't -

toughness+rebounding+more balls than Hibbert – who has none, Nene had one removed from testicular cancer, right? :)

by FortWayneKarl on Dec 8, 2011 10:13 AM EST reply actions

rebounding???

Nene: 7.6 rpg, 20.8% defensive rebound %

Hibbert: 7.5 rpg, 21% defensive rebound %

Where did this myth that Nene is some big time rebounding come from? Yes he is athletic and tall but dude isn’t a double double machine or anything.

facts >>>> myths

by the way,

the numbers you posted for nene are numbers our 4 didn’t have last year.

tyler 11.2 ppg 5.2 rpg 0.2bpg
josh 5.2ppg 5.3rpg 0.8bpg
posey 4.9ppg 3rpg 0.1bpg
solo 3.6ppg 2.9rpg 0.6bpg

by denggoy7 on Dec 8, 2011 10:31 AM EST reply actions

I still don't believe Nene is a 4 anyway

but anyway

I am not saying he isn’t better than our current big men. I am saying he isn’t worth 13 mil a year

HOLD UP

Let’s look at Nene and THANS50 per 48 minutes and we get essentially the same player last year.

Nene (9 year vet: 22.9ppg/12rebbies/1.5 blocks
THANS50 (2 year vet): 24ppg/11.4rebbies/.5 blocks

Biggest difference that should be a topic of discussion is the fact that Nene does it with a shooting percentage of 61.5% (highest in the league last year), compared to thans50’s 46.5%. Milsap was 10th with 53%, btw.

mcbob: is 16/11.5/1.7 with54.7% shooting and three point shot.
milsap: 5 yrs/24.3/10.7/1.3 and a better passer. shooting % above.

Just a guess...

…but I’d say the reason why may be because the guy everyone wants, you know, the PF who averages 20 and 10 with 3 bpg, and 3 spg, and who Indy got through trade by merely offering Posey and Rush, and who upon coming to Indy graciously decided to sign a 5-year contract worth 20 mil…doesn’t exist!

by Glenn A. on Dec 8, 2011 11:08 AM EST reply actions

exactly!!! did people forget that Al hordford was an allstar last season!!!!!!!!!!!

Al Hordford had slightly better numbers than Nene, and how much is al Hordford making? exactly 12 mil, which I think is a bargain. The only 20 and 10 power forwards last year I believe were Zach Randolph , Blake Griffin, Lamarcus ALdridge and Kevin Love and that was it. Last time I check Zach Randolph just inked a 16 mil/yr deal, and Blake griffin and Kevin Love will have a big payday coming their way soon. Nene does not have their awesome scoring and rebounding numbers, but he is a better defender than most of those guys. Yeah, his shot blocking rate wasn’t great, but there’s more than just shot blocking in a good post defender. Nene has good hands and good steal rate, just checking hoopdata and you will find that Nene has been historically an above average defender actually a very very good one in 2010. I personally would like to have someone like Serge Ibabka instead of Nene, but if the money is somewhere between 12-13, I wouldn’t hesitat. All that said, Nene probably won’t be a Pacer by the end of the day.

by latrell spreewel on Dec 8, 2011 2:59 PM EST up reply actions

I guess because he's better than anything we have currently

My preference has always been for Milsap, but I honestly just want to see them take a chance at some point. I’ll watch whether they sign Nene or not.

I will say this

IF (huge if) we end up with Rondo without losing george, granger, or hibbert… (and we can’t get milsap)

then I am fine with going all in with Nene. It would be overpaying him, but it could be worth it if it gets us back in contention. And a starting line up of Rondo/George/Granger/Nene/Hibbert is a top 4 team in the East.

by dbcb on Dec 8, 2011 12:17 PM EST reply actions

Why? because he's a free agent and he's better than above average

are Nene’s stats eye catching? No. But they are better than most power forwards in the league. The most in demand asset in the NBA today is a skilled big man, there are tons and tons of excellent up and coming point guards but skill big men that are versatile and bring paint presence are far and few in between. Why did dallas win the championship this year as oppose to years before, its because they finally had a respectable paint presence. Why did the Lakers win the year before that? Because their front line was unmatchable with 3 legit skilled bigs.
Look, nobody wants to overpay a guy, but if of overpaying means overpaying by an acceptable amount then you do it because what’s the Chance that the Pacers lure in a big free agent aquisition next year? Not very likely, in fact the Pacers have never, and I mean never brought in any superstar through Free Agent. Of course Nene will still not be qualify as a superstar, but at some point, if you have the financial ability to make an acquisition that will make the team significantly better, you absolutely do it.
Also, think of what happens if we don’t sign Nene and he goes to the Nets, then the Nets suddenly are a player in the East in just a matter of minutes and where what will the Pacers do in response? sign Carl Landry? that’s even worse than overpaying that’s just wasting your salary because on Paper Carl Landry seems like a decent fit, but trust me, there is a sizeable difference over the long run between someone like Nene and Landry.
I completely agree that there is a limit to how much weshould give to Nene, but if it’s close enough to the ball park that Larry and Co. have in mind, they got to pull the trigger, because the consequences of not signing might be greater. The Pacers are already a playoff team this year due to their completness in depth, but adding a player of Nene stature would push the Pacers to a 3rd or 4th or 5th seed, though that may not sound as exicting, but the at least there is a fighting chance for an upset if a couple of shots fall our way.

by latrell spreewel on Dec 8, 2011 2:40 PM EST reply actions

I Agree

When you have a market that has a shortage of a particular item, everyone will be forced to overpay due to demand. You don’t have to be a superstar to be a skilled 4. Frankly, we might be better off with just less than a superstar so we don’t have them controlling the future of the team. Nene starting at the 4 with Tyler coming off the bench (more on this in a second) will be nearly impossible to match up with. We just can’t pay Nene superstar money though. What is Bosh getting in Miami? Nene doesn’t get any more than that or we are just burning money. If the nets give him 16mil+ so be it.

*On Tyler

I am a huge Tyler fan because I think he brings more mettle to this team than many realize. Some of our best players are pretty soft and Tyler galvanizes that. Other guys may bring swagger but he brings toughness. He is playing nice with the media saying he will welcome anyone that can help, but I know deep down coming off the bench will make him angry. And an angry Tyler is probably the most effective one to play. So in effect, Nene makes Tyler more dangerous. Literally and figuratively. I’m for it.

by indycrr on Dec 8, 2011 3:15 PM EST up reply actions

100% percent agree

think of it this way. Which team in the east will have a better over all front court than the Pacers if we sign Nene to an acceptable deal? The Bulls? probably, but a lot depends on how Boozer improves from his season last year, Orlando? yeah, they got Howard, but who’s his side kick? Most teams, especially in the east have very inferior front court, the Pacers suddenly will out class almost all of their eastern brethens in a single stroke.

by latrell spreewel on Dec 8, 2011 3:42 PM EST up reply actions

Here’s an excellent NYT article on why we should love for Nene to become a Pacer…

Why Nene Should Be in Demand

by FortWayneKarl on Dec 8, 2011 4:14 PM EST reply actions

forget stats

Nene was a big part of the nuggets run last year in the playoffs, after everyone thought they’d get swept due to the absence of melo. Lets not forget that if we added nene, we could possibly have the biggest starting back-court in the league. Nene played at center most of the time for the nuggets, and sliding him over to the 4 would give him an advantage over a lot of smaller PF’s in the league. Who knows, maybe if he plays against smaller players, he could be a little more successful on the offensive end as he would probably muscle them around.
