IC Cold Links: Pacers Ready For Preseason Opener Vs. Bulls

Game day, y'all!

Well, preseason game day, but it sure seems closer to a regular season game, doesn't it? After a week of practice, the Indiana Pacers will take on the Chicago Bulls in one of two preseason games before the regular season. As Mike Wells reports, the Pacers will be playing it much more like a regular season game, too.

Pacers coach Frank Vogel wants to play his rotation players 80 percent of the game because there are just two preseason games this year.

"It is a little weird," Pacers swingman Danny Granger said. "Normally the rotation players play a lot of minutes in the final two preseason games. But it is the final two preseason games because we're only playing two games."

Check out the links after the jump with stories on George Hill tipping off his Pacers career and Tyler Hansbrough adjusting to his role on the team.

If the Spurs are into a undersized PF that plays SF and can’t score . . . More Power to Them!

And why does everyone keep bringing up his hands all the time. . . . Is it because if he has big hands he must have big . . . . feet. Whatever. . .

I hope we win tonight. I know its preseason and doesn’t matter, but we need to change our mindset to “We must Win.” I don’t care if its beer pong or game 7 of the Finals . . . We need to win everything at all cost.

I would think something like this would be why.

big hands ==> better ball control ==> fewer turnovers
big hands ==> better rebounder ==> more opportunities

If we don’t resign Hill next year and Leonard goes onto be a good player, will that mean we lost on the trade?

I think Leonard is a SF like Gerald Wallace, not a bad guy to be compared to (injuries aside). I feel like his size is perfectly fine, it doesn’t hurt that he has a 7-3 wingspan either. I don’t think he will be a star, but I wouldn’t have minded having him on the team.

I just searched the scholarly journals and I did not find a study to prove your theory. . . So if you can cite that source or show me your extensive scientific study on the matter I would concead this arguement

Here are some other untrue statements that people like you believe:

White Men Can’t Jump
Black people Can’t Swim
White people are Smarter so they make better coaches and QBs

The hands thing is important

Big dudes with small hands have a hell of a time holding on to the ball. It is a hell of a lot easier to control the ball with big hands. You can do things with the ball that mini-hand people can’t. Seriously, go get a womens or little kids basketball and dribble it around. 1000x easier.

Also can’t dunk the ball with one hand if you got mini hands. Sprewell used to have that problem I do believe.

See: Brown, Kwame as an example of someone with tiny hands (for nba standards at least).

The size of your hands does not dictate how good you dribble or dunk . . . Because there are a near equal number of people on each side of that. . . .

There are lots of people with big hands that can dribble
There are lots of people with big hands that can’t dribble
There are lots of people with small hands that can dribble
There are lots of people with small hands that can’t dribble

Basicly those are all sports Myths that are very unproven, and if someone has big hands it doesn’t mean anything. Also you have no facts backing that up and research has proved that people with all size hand can be good or bad at dribbling.

I have a hard time believing...

…NBA scouts, etc. would bother measuring hand size if it meant nothing.

Have you ever played basketball man

Having large hands is an advantage. It doesn’t mean you are going to have awesome dribbling skills and if you have small hands it doesn’t mean that if you have small hands you are going to struggle. There are no absolutes. No one is saying that.

It just means having large hands is HELPFUL and an advantage when compared to small hands.

Antonio Davis had this issue as well (small hands) but he still had a pretty successful carrier. But just think what he could have done with big hands. Maybe that phantom foul against Larry Johnson and the Knicks wouldn’t have been called in the playoffs (?).

Which Storyline Will You Be Following Most This Season:

Youngest Coach in NBA history.
“Assistan” Coach Brian Shaw.
Hill returning Home (despite his initial reluctance).
Hibbert + 15lbs of muscle.
Playoff Veteran & Leader David West.
Collission, Paul & Hansbrough – Year 2.
Granger as a 2nd, on some nights 3rd scoring option.
The other Jeff.

My focus will be on Lance – From Born Ready to Now Ready!

by jonjonNYC on Dec 16, 2011 9:26 AM EST reply actions

Why would Granger be the 2nd or 3rd option?

Knowing what we know now, he is still the best player on the team.

all I've heard is postives coming out of camp about lance

I be surprised if he didn’t see good minutes, and by good minutes I mean minutes during the game when it’s not a blow out.

this don't feel like preseason at all

almost feel like this is can’t miss game. I don’t think the Pacers can get a better team than bulls to test their progress and development, so happy they get the Bulls, instead of Milwakee, Detroit, or cleveland. I remeber the Pacers getting destroyed last year in the preseason by the bulls, and that was a big indication as to where the team’s abilities were.

And they didn't have Boozer?

I think he was injured . . .

Things I'll be looking for tonight and beyond...

1. Improved court vision by DC. Not necessarily double-digit assists, but I’d like to see DC consistently keying in on the whereabouts of teammates.

2. Improved ball handling by PG. PG’s capable of guarding two-guards (despite what Hollinger says), he has appropriate athleticism, and shooting mechanics for a two-guard, but his handles were so atrocious last season, he often looked scared to dribble, especially against ball pressure (e.g. Keith Bogans, etc.). Improved handles could be the indicator that he’s the two-guard of the future, and a giant mismatch waiting happen on both sides of the ball.

3. Granger’s post game. After Vogel took over, Granger played in the post a little more and showed some promise. I’m all for Granger improving any aspect of his game that makes him a more efficient player.

4. Hibbert’s play around the rim. Gotta be honest, I had thoughts of “same old Hibbert” when watching him miss an easy tip, and fumble the ball close to the hoop during the training-camp-scrimmage video.Prove me wrong, Hibs! What better way to test his newfound muscle than to battle against Noah and Boozer down low.

It's finally here!

Idc if it’s pre-season or not, a game is a game. I’m going to be watching Lance as well, as I think he’ll get plenty of burn on the floor. Also be paying attention to how well Hill adjust from playing for the Spurs and playing for the Pacers. Should be a fun game, and I won’t take a lot from this game, but I will definitely enjoy watching it. Just wish JP was playing.

2 YEAR PLAN

I dont think many people understand whats going on here. Larry bird is obviously trying a two year plan here. We have the young talent, and a good star pairing in West and Granger. Long term upside with hibbert, tyler, DC, and Hill.

The difference is Larry Bird thinks that G Hill can help the pacers NOW, and even though Leonard could end up being Gerald Wallace-esque, he also could be a bust.

He didnt fit into the WIN NOW situation that Larry is putting together. Now, the back court has an outstanding rotation. I think he is doin a great job. Im excited for this season.

by dmann31 on Dec 16, 2011 11:17 AM EST reply actions

plus

i think with the lock out coming i think Bird decided to not take a rookie because there was less time available to develop them. And with this tight schedule there is not much time to do any practice development either.
