Finally, we have some basketball!
Yes it is only a preseason game but there will be real, live NBA players going at it in a hurry to prepare for the regular season to start in less than two weeks. Plus, it's the Chicago Bulls.
The same crew that ended the Indiana Pacers season last year in the first round of the playoffs is back, ready to build on their successful season last year that ended painfully at the hands of the Miami Heat. The Bulls are moving away from Keith Bogans at shooting guard, signing Rip Hamilton to bolster the position that was a misnomer with Bogans on the floor. Hamilton might play tonight but probably not much since his first practice with the team was on Thursday. I do expect Rip to revive his career and be a pain when the games start to count.
As for the Pacers, they expect to be without forwards David West and Jeff Pendergraph, as both guys acclimate themselves to the Pacers while pushing to get in game shape. The Pacers versatile roster has created some intrigue with the starting lineup so I'm taking a best guess and with West out it looks just like it did when the Pacers faced the Bulls in the playoffs. Let's go!!!
Here is the Pacers.com preview. Don't forget, all tickets tonight are $10 and all of the proceeds go to the United Way of Central Indiana.

First play of the game
Rose drives to the rim, Jeff knocks him into the 3rd row. A rivalry takes the next step.
Sup Jello Shot?
Bulls waived Bogans
I heard he was terrified of Foster and Hansbrough and asked to be released so he wouldn’t have to play them
Sup Jello Shot?
i don't like the fact that they got Rip
He’s never suffer any serious injury, and he’s still in good shape, and he has a history of killing the Pacers. Rip was the guy that stop the Pacers from possibly winning a championship in 2003, the Pacers could stop everyone on the Pistons accept him, and that’s why they lost that series.

Wow
I always thought it was when Prince blocked Reggie at the rim. . .
Check out my website at www.bradwellssucks.com
that was just one play, and the pacers might still not have won that game
no doubt prince was a key player in that series, but hamilton was their main offenisve punch

Great way to kick off a great sports weekend
Pacers win tonight, Hoosiers/Boilers win tomorrow (unless you’re a Notre Dame or Butler fan, then I’m sorry..), and the faint glimmer that the Colts might not lose on Sunday. It’s an Indiana sports showcase weekend!
Vogel pre-game comments
West looking good in practice, probably could play tonight but want to let him recover from a couple of days of hard practice and re-evaluate for Tuesday’s game.
FV not worried about him playing on Tuesday, confident he’ll be ready for opening night.
Pendergraph knee still an issue, not related to previous surgery.
D.West has not been wearing even a sleeve on his knee in practice and didn’t have one on as I watched him go thru individual work. As you can tell, I’m remain a bit skeptical about his health, but it appears to be a non-issue.
It better be a non-issue.
Or Bird needs his head examined.

all of these are valid concerns which means we definitely need another big for insurance.
Tom, what’s your take on the training camp invitees? has anyone in particular been a surprise?
by latrell spreewel on Dec 16, 2011 6:31 PM EST up reply actions
Frank likes 'em all
no shock there. Famous seems to be the most likely to make it and sounded like a couple of those guys will get some run tonight with West and Pendergraph out.
what's your take on famous? does he rotate well on D? is he completely raw on offense?
by latrell spreewel on Dec 16, 2011 6:41 PM EST up reply actions
haven't seen him
We’ll find out together. His DLeague reviews are good, but even if he makes the roster I don’t expect him to have a role unless injuries derail things.

There is a basektball game on.
There is a basketball game on.
There is a Pacers game on.
I am excited without much foreboding.
This is weird.
Go Colts Dammit!
Stuck at work...
Updates throughout the game would be much appreciated. Would really like to hear how PG performs.

Brilliant.
Darren looks good early
taking it right at Rose

Not joking
Roy just did a nice job of avoiding a foul coming in behind Noah. Showed some body control after running down the court to get in the play.
did I say darren looks good?
he looks really good

to be fair this is preseason
the bulls taking this game lightly it seems

saw a new rule in effect earlier
Deng swept thru Granger’s arms, drew foul but not foul shots.
by Tom Lewis on Dec 16, 2011 7:24 PM EST via iPhone app reply actions
I'd like to see him break him down off the dribble and then drive it.
Good to see PG make a shot farther than 15ft from the basket.

Fashionably late, as usual
Who are the starters? The ones named in the above post?
Any Boozer head wags to ridicule, yet?
Roy with some good post moves
Don’t look pretty, but they’re effective at getting the basket and/or foul.
Loved that
move!! Ha just manned up against the contact of Taj, and made a play! YES!
can't believe c.j. watson is beating us

Pacers up 33-22 after one
It’s just preseason, but you’ve gotta like what you’ve seen here. Except C.J. Watson lightin’ it up.
Yeah
I’m loving it. Watson is the only bull putting up anything really. I like how our defense is active.
best of all
derrick Rose has zero all across the board
by latrell spreewel on Dec 16, 2011 7:41 PM EST up reply actions
Loving it
I think perhaps we need to get used to seeing the Pacers with leads and holding off teams instead of playing from behind
OK, since I haven't been able to watch and have a hard listening to Mark Boyle
the one thing I’ve been able to summarize is that Pacers have only tried 3 3’s and a lot of shots taken and made in the paint. Good, yeah?
the depth are showing
the pacers scoring has been balance as oppose to bulls
by latrell spreewel on Dec 16, 2011 7:42 PM EST reply actions
I like what I've seen thus far. Not much rust shown thus far.

serious preseason lineup in now

Stevenson can't keep up with rose
Now foster with 3 fouls

That was really the first play he was beaten on
He did well on the previous play not letting Rose get a good look
wtf are you talking about
Lance is doing a really good job

Ahh.
I’m not a fan of either of these teams, (although with the Pacers I’m neutral—I dislike the Bulls) but heck, it sure is nice to be able to comment on a gamethread again. Good luck this season!
"Shoot baskets, not people." -AK
I'm really going to enjoy never seeing this lineup on the floor again, heh.
D. Jones is our go-to guy on offense.
Way to Double Korver on the 3
lol . . . rotate someone
Check out my website at www.bradwellssucks.com
Lots of BAD shots
No ball movement . . . No leader in the 2nd unit. . . I guess it should be D. Jones
Check out my website at www.bradwellssucks.com
The shot seclections
Are pissing me off. not just him either.
Bizarro Nuggets quarter
0-15 by my count.
Hope we don’t see too much of this unit this year, especially if D.Jones is gonna be taking this many shots.
So this lineup will never play in a real game...

Ah
Intention/shooting foul seems a bit iffy in execution. Deng not rewarded with free throws, Rose is by running into Hibbert and then forcing up a shot
Was just thinking the exact same thing.
i like that rule in theory, but it seems like it opens the door to a lot more subjective calls for the refs—which we can generally assume is going to benefit stars.

I can kind of see why Larry wanted another scorer for the second unit.

I think that lineup of Lance/PG/D. Jones/Lazare/ Foster stayed in the game a little too long. For five or six minutes they had no idea where to go on offense and it just knocked the whole team out of whack for the remainder of the quarter.
Hill did well when he first came in
It’s hard to get a gauge since he was taken out so quickly, but I do hope we’ll see what we should expect the second unit to look like a bit in the second half. It looks tailor made for him and Hansbrough to keep momentum going.
But heading into the season without a scoring 2 for the second unit may not be a good idea.
although the 2nd quater was brutal
there were a lot of positives
Darren defense looks much better and Paul George is taking it fearlessly into the lane, Paul deserves all the comparisons to tmac right now.
by latrell spreewel on Dec 16, 2011 8:21 PM EST reply actions
lol i wouldn't go that farrr
his ball handling is the same, and his speed hasn’t changed that much. he’s pretty much the same player as last year
His speed was never a problem, was it?
There were a couple instances of sloppy dribbling, but I have to assume that his ability to get into the lane during the first half had something to do with at least slightly improved ball handling, right?
by dustinpurvis on Dec 16, 2011 8:24 PM EST up reply actions
Plus how many times did last year’s PG have nine and seven at the half?
by dustinpurvis on Dec 16, 2011 8:26 PM EST up reply actions
what? Last year Paul never would've been that aggressive
by latrell spreewel on Dec 16, 2011 8:26 PM EST up reply actions
i'm sorry to bust your bubble guys
but paul george isn’t looking that impressive. a lot of people expect him to be our next all star but I don’t see it. his coordination is what holds him back, and body control. superstars like tmac, kobe, and even all stars like paul pierce and rudy gay have better coordination than him.
right now paul looks like a trevor ariza type of player, only SLIGHTLY better
just look at his free throw attempts, that's a sign
8 free throw attempts and we’re only through one half!!!!!

First half reflection
This goes without saying, but we need to find the rotation. That one did NOT work. However, West should help that a lot. I like Hansbrough hopefully being able to do what he does with the second unit…. as long as that second unit doesn’t involve Dahntay Jones. Why is he still here, again?
I don’t mind Dahntay so long as he doesn’t play a big role in the team’s offense. I liked his D on Rose last year when PG was on the bench.

Philly is playing too
Just checked their box score and Speights has yet to play. Is he injured or completely fallen out of favor? Would be a good backup
I think he might have been involved in a deal that fell through
For some reason I remember reading this week that he was gone. I could be just imagining that though

probably fallen out of favor
all he does is shoot midrange and that’s it, he really fell off the begin of last season

To all the homers
If West can give us some solid minutes like we all think he will, Hansbrough will be an absolute beast off the bench. I will miss McRoberts’s dunks as much as anyone, but our 4 will be much better this year
At least Vogel is giving Lance a chance with this lineup.

Unless something goes horribly wrong
Or horribly right, we should get a look at how the team executes in crunch time tonight as well.
Whatever else you want to say about Lance, he changes speed as well as anyone

He’s young; just needs to learn how to harness those physical skills. I really like him and George Hill working together.

Btw - with the talk of Lance and Darren having a nice training camp...
how do they look in real game time?
I can't be honest about Lance cause everyone will get mad at me if I tell the truth.

in isolation killing us everytime . . . I would just say the next time they come down the lane send Penderwho in and let him knock them on thier ass.

I'm hoping they're getting one of their bad shooting nights out of the way
So there’s one less for the regular season
I don't even know what to say
they’re playing well! Playing good defense, getting good shots etc. Nothing to show for it.
Never followed him in San Antonio, but I've not seen Hill do anything of note today
by pendulum55 on Dec 16, 2011 9:16 PM EST reply actions 1 recs
And you never will.
Or at least very rarely. Hill usually doesnt do “anything of note.” He’s one of those players that looks like he’s just there most the game, on offense at least, never really wows you. He just plays solid ball and so you miss it and go back and look at the boxscore and see he actually played well. Usually.
Mr. Deng
If I don’t say anything about your new haircut its cause you got a shitty haircut . . . So just drop it.

Starter scoring is pretty even across the board, even though Danny clanked a bunch
Bench scoring was…ugh.
Hey
We don’t have many turnovers this game
/positive
We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.
Always remember that you're unique, just like everybody else
Pacers shoot 33% in the game
Horrible, but if they had shot 33% in the second and fourth quarter, it gives Indiana a great chance in this game.
Lots of steps need to be made. See if they can adjust and get better shots/shots to fall.
Ack. They got a few things to work on, to say the least.
And hopefully the second unit can be better, esp if D. West plays what we think he can play at.
Cheers, everyone.
You took the words out of my mouth.
by hilliard on Dec 16, 2011 9:48 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
2nd unit has trouble scoring
This will change when West starts and Hansbrough goes to the bench, but I think we should make a s&t play for Nick Young. Offer him the same deal as Crawford and see if Washington will play ball.
Nick Young is my favorite player in the league
I would never want on my team.
But if he can shoot in the 44% range, he wouldn’t be bad so long as he only touches the ball on plays designed for him.
the second quarter really took the momentum out of the game
Hansbrough played terrific, Paul george looks more aggressive. Overall, a pretty bad first showing but it’s the first preseason game, there’s bound to be sloppiness and horrible shooting percentage.
by latrell spreewel on Dec 16, 2011 9:44 PM EST reply actions
My observations
Paul and Lance still looked for Danny and Roy too much. Shoot the damn ball. George Hill seemed tight being his first game with Pacers. Granger … please package him in some kind of deal to get Gordon. Roy … still looks lost offensively. Paul still needs to work on his ball handling skills. I guess I can cut them some slack being the first game.
roy looked pretty good i thought
considering this is his first game in a long time
