Around SBN: Ray Allen Fighting Age, Injury And His New Role

Mike Wells tweeting that Jim O'Brien will be giving Tyler Hansbrough the go ahead as the team's starter when Indiana finally takes the floor again tomorrow night. Wells goes on to say the reason is that O'Brien feels Hansbrough is the most offensively capable of the team's options at the PF position. It would appear the promotion is now Tyler's to lose.

25 and under starters

I say we start only guys under 25….Collison, Rush, George, Hansbrough, Hibbert…..actually not a bad lineup at all for guys that have yet to enter their primes….

Harper's on Miller, McKey, gets in to Miller for the win and...

JOB's rotations...

oh I was just being sarcastic….just seems like this could be a reason for one of JOB’s rotations….just jokin around….

I think he's just bipolar

and I’m really only half joking

small ball schmall ball

whenever JOB says something it’s pretty much guaranteed he does the complete opposite

it wouldn't surprise me at all if Hans starting is just a one time deal because of Blair and he goes back to DNPCD's

But I really, REALLY hope this break in between games Larry sat the whole coaching staff down (separately) and asked each of them their opinion on what’s going on with the team. Then Larry told JOB “listen, our focal point C who you run the offense through needs help on the block and that ain’t friggin James Posey.” I continue to think Hans was a bad pick, which doesn’t mean I’m not rooting for him, but it’s pretty clear he’s the best option to take some pressure off Roy.

Or Hans’ll play 4 minutes, make a turnover, and sit the rest of the game.

Hans starting is just a prelude to the rest of the story.

OBrien told McRoberts at the beggining of the season that he didn't want Josh 's offense

McRoberts does was Obie wants and Obie rewards him with a seat on the bench.

by Keauhou on Jan 6, 2011 4:19 PM EST reply actions

Well...

In all fairness, when he requested that role out of McBob, he probably wasn’t thinking that Granger, Hibbert, and DC were going to struggle as much as they have. With those three being so inconsistent—in Granger’s case just flat-out inefficient—and with so few other trustworthy offensive players, it’s no wonder he’s looking for more offense.

by Glenn A. on Jan 6, 2011 6:10 PM EST up reply actions

well then, why not run a few plays for Josh McRoberts before dumping him

out of the starting lineup completely? Someone already posted the stats show the McRoberts/Hibbert tandem is effective. Jostling the starting lineup with Foster?McBob?Posey and now Hansbrough at the PF just throws everybody off rhythm even more.

by Keauhou on Jan 6, 2011 7:41 PM EST up reply actions

McBob isn’t a great offensive player. He has no inside game (he didn’t have one at Duke either). Basically, on offense, he’s a guy who’s at his best when he can handle and create for others a little bit. And he’s good for a three every now and then too. I don’t think JOB is wrong for not calling plays for him. I do think he’s wrong for waiting so long to try and fix the offense. The offense has been the Achilles’ heel of this team since the preseason and just now he’s starting to look for other options. Hansbrough’s been on the bench practically the whole season. He was JOB’s best offensive option at PF from day one and it takes him 32 games to give him a real chance (and we’ll see if he actually gets a real chance). That’s where I think he should be criticized. He waited far too long.

Hopefully Larry had a nice chat with JOB and told him to start playing the younger guys. Let’s see more playing time for PG and Hans (maybe even a Lance sighting) and less time for Dunleavy and Posey

Interesting

Hansbrough hasn’t even been a part of the regular rotation for much of the season but now he draws a start? Have to believe an order was given from above especially considering JOB’s recent desire to play a ton more “small ball.” However, we should know for sure who was at the bottom of this by how JOB handles Tyler’s minutes tonight.

This Coach is a Doozie, Ain't He?

MY goodness. Will this coach “ever” get things straight? I’m sure hoping that this is coming from the front office, and that JOB’s clock with the Pacers is running out. Maybe, just maybe, someone has been on here and read some of the feelings of the fans, and passed it on to Bird. Maybe Bird is finally getting the message. This team is going nowhere like it is, with this coach! And, I’m disheartend by all the things I’ve read lately where no-one really wants to come here and play. How can that be? Just a measley 5 or 6 yrs. ago, the Pacers had a team who’d made the playoffs something like 9 out of 10 yrs. (I could be wrong on that). We even got on national t.v. once in awhile. What’s happened? We need to try to make some changes. Hibbert definitely needs some help on the boards-someone who can help rebound, block out, and score. Not a ton of points, but nothing’s coming from the forward position to help him. I like Blatche, who I believe is on the Wizards team. He may not be the best choice, but he sure looked good against us in those two back to back games. Surely somone out there would be willing to come to Indiana. And my last comment….finally, hopefully, Lance Stevenson ‘might’ get to play some. The more playing time he gets the rest of the year, the better he’s gonna be next year, instead of being a “rookie type player” again. I sure think he’s gotta be better than playing Ford, who hopefully will be gone after this year.

Hans

One thing that should be kept in mind is that being named the starting PF on this team in no way guarantees big minutes. So while the title of starter is intriguing, it may just continue to mean 10-20 minutes a night for Hans which wouldn’t really wouldn’t signify much of a change.

I’m not usually into the “management directive” idea, but in this case it at least seems plausible. Larry is a stubborn old Bird and he really liked Hansbrough. In fact, his comments after the ‘09 draft were something to the effect of, "I can’t wait for Tyler to go out there and prove all these idiots (doubters) wrong." With that sort of passion, it’s not a stretch at all to think he told JOB to get Tyler out there on the court in order to—at the very least—avoid making himself look bad.

by Glenn A. on Jan 6, 2011 9:57 PM EST reply actions

Hans has been getting yanked around by JOB all year

DNPCD’s, garbage time, legitimate meaningful minutes. A consistent 10-20 a night WOULD be a pretty big change, and much appreciated so we can all at least all really figure out what Hans can bring. I’m still under the impression this is strictly a matchup thing against Blair as opposed to any change in what JOB’ll do with Tyler. Hell, until I actually see Tyler start I won’t believe it.
