Anthony Randolph To Pacers Deal Denied By Donnie Walsh

[From the FanPosts, thanks indycrr for posting the latest trade rumor involving the Pacers. Don't think it will be the last either. -TL]

Frank Isola reports on a rumored three-team deal out of New York that included athletic big man, Anthony Randolph going to the Indiana Pacers for a first round pick.

Discuss...  I personally would have loved this trade for us.  If true it does show that Bird and Co are actively looking for a way to get a young athletic PF. I wonder what it would take to sweeten the pot for NY enough to do this. I don't suppose Lance Stephenson would do it. This kind of confirms my suspicions that since things were very quiret that something was probably in the works.

I would love this

But I don’t know about sweetening the pot with Stephenson. I really think (recent troubles aside) that he was a steal in the second round. Throw in Rush.

by TheHawk5 on Sep 3, 2010 10:51 AM EDT reply actions

I’d do it in a heartbeat. Two player that were supposedly supposed to have huge seasons (Collison and Randolph) would play here. Add on how hard Roy is working along with Paul George…. what a young team.

I missed the denied part at first glancew and started prematurly dancing

The Knicks really want Rudy

Some how some way this could still happen ….
The collison rumor took 3 months to come true …
other than the fact the knicks would be left really light up front
(NO BACK UP FOR RABBI STAUDAMIRE) …

I would’ve loved it …. Fair deal in my eyes … I could not see us sweetening this deal anymore though a 1st rounder is a lot in this league

If they're worried about their frontcourt

We could toss in one of our young bigs (Rolle or McRoberts). I’d love it.

Guys, there is no way NY is trading Randolph, especially for Rudy. Walsh has a love affair with AR.

by SgtOrange on Sep 3, 2010 12:16 PM EDT reply actions

I could see something happening.

Walsh may love him but Randolph is stuck behind Stoudamire. I do not see a team that plays these guys at the 4 and 5 having the frontcourt defense and rebounding to get by.

by kennythered on Sep 3, 2010 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I see much more of a love affair from the fans

The Knicks did not invest much to land Randolph. You guys will all be salty as hell once he gets moved. He can’t play with Amar(apostrophe)e and Dani.

Amare
Randolph
Dani
Mason/Walker
Felton

That lineup is meh. If I were you guys, I’d be building massive amounts of assets getting ready for a CP3 and Melo deals. I would say screw Rudy, give me the Indy 1st rounder and something else. I’d then try to move Chandler for something that can give me a chance to land Melo.

by kennythered on Sep 3, 2010 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

actually

we won’t move AR for anything….we are gonna let him develop along with our young team..Donnie loves AR just as much as the fans do….The only way we trade him is if Melo or CP3 is at the other end of that deal..and actually that lineup is a matchup nightmare for other teams

by hopelessknickfan on Sep 4, 2010 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Not really

I see 20 teams that could guard this team.

by kennythered on Sep 4, 2010 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions

knickfan..

i think you are severely overestimating the ability of that lineup… besides Amare these guys all look pretty average. BTW, speaking of matchup nightmare, who’s going to grab rebounds?

by bigdawg9292 on Sep 5, 2010 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions

+1

Oh wait you didn’t hear, they will shoot 70% and hole other teams to 10% from the field, so why rebound, they are matchup nightmares. I mean Roy would be able to get 10+ boards against them.

by kennythered on Sep 5, 2010 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

in any event

our team is still better than the pacers..

by hopelessknickfan on Sep 5, 2010 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Your team has also shot all its flexibility for the forseeable future...

Have fun winning 45 games the next two years and then paying Amare $70 million over the next four after he hurts his knee again. Fact of life: when your third best guy is either Ray Felton or Gallinari you’re probably not going all that far as a team.

by bigdawg9292 on Sep 6, 2010 12:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Right,

It’s unreal. Once they get spurned by Melo, just like LeBron, the Knicks will be back to square one which is overpaying for players that are not very good. They are the Mets of the NBA. To top it off, they probably have the second worst owner in all of sports and players know this, so they want nothing to do with him.

The Pacers will enjoy our cap, steadily building through the draft and frugal management, and kick the Knicks ass on our way to the playoffs, while you sit and overvalue your teams “upside.” (Granted Dino and Randolph have upside)
Felton/Amar(apostrophe)e are overpaid, killing the flexibility you desperately wanted to land LeBron. You basically threw away a few years to get NOTHING.

by kennythered on Sep 6, 2010 12:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Don't wanna nitpick, but...

Who is our third best player? Collison? Roy? a rookie? I suppose Rush could be a possibility. That being said, I don’t really think the Knicks will be that good either, I think they can make the playoffs, as can we, but they’ll probably hover around .500 all year. I’m not a fan of Amare, think he is overrated. It’ll be interesting to see how good he is without Nash, who is hands down the best PG in the league.

by infinityzero.systemerror on Sep 6, 2010 2:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Probably Roy at this point

The knicks are definitely better right now but, as you said, they’re not an elite contender, nor are they able to do much to improve in the coming years. Bottom line, I’d rather be in the Pacers’ current situation.

by bigdawg9292 on Sep 6, 2010 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

They also don’t have a 1st round pick until 2014….. oww.

by B-Huse on Sep 6, 2010 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

actuallly...

we have one next year. whoops.

not sure what you all mean about us not having financial flexibility.
we will be able to sign a max contract this offseason or next if we wanted.

AR, Danillo are all on their rookie deals.

I’m not saying we’re a contender. but we’re a heck of alot closer than the Pacers. and no, im not trying to start a fight. just saying what i think are facts.

by ben linus on Sep 7, 2010 10:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Is it wise to trade a likely lotto pick at this point?

Randolph is only under club control for 2 more years. This is still only a 35ish win team. Seems stupid to mortgage the future at this point.

If Bird liked Randolph you should have taken him over Brandon Rush in the first place.

well hopefully....

if things go well, this would only be a mid-round pick in the #15 range.

Bird could have also picked Collison over Hanbrough, in hindsight a much better pick
lets look at things that will make our team better and not at past mistakes

its just

an unrealistic proposal. might as well ask for brandon roy for brandon rush.

rudy for randolph ?
or randolph for a first ?
sounds like wishful thinking from a blazers or pacers fan.

by ben linus on Sep 3, 2010 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Randolph for a first is anything but wishful thinking.

The Pacers could be drafting in the top 5 next year. Randolph is not worth that, and there are not many higher on the guy. Once again, a case of NY over valuing a player. This is why Yankee baseball cards are always overpriced haha

by kennythered on Sep 3, 2010 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

lol

ya, i guess it will be a pretty high pick. didnt think of that part.
but i have a feeling you guys will be a fringe playoff team.

and also, randolph is liek tailor made for D’antonis offense.
if only he had a reliable 3pt shot. hed be the perfect fit for mike.

by ben linus on Sep 3, 2010 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Meh

I think we are not getting the full story. I agree that its slim the Knicks move AR for just Rudy, however Randolph is block, Rudy plays the type of ball that your coach loves, and adding something small to this deal, in favor of the Knicks, could get it done. No way NYK was keeping David Lee, so I assume they were just happy to get something for him. It’s not like the Knicks made a HUGE investment to land Randolph.

by kennythered on Sep 3, 2010 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions

**

Randolph is blocked*

by kennythered on Sep 3, 2010 1:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Wouldn’t there have to be some players from the Pacers thrown in to make the deal work? We already have 16 players on a 15 man roster.

by donnyfher on Sep 3, 2010 12:47 PM EDT reply actions

Also,

the Heat have 18 on their roster. It just does not matter right now.

by kennythered on Sep 3, 2010 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

We’ll see about Born Ready. I’m not doubting that he’ll be cut if he’s found guilty, but I’m not totally buying that girl’s story, mainly the part where he slammed her head into the concrete after throwing her downstairs yet she was walking around the next day. I think if that were true she would have an extended hospital stay, but thats besides the point. Even with him cut the proposed trade would put us at 16 so it wouldn’t work. And Miami being at 18 doesn’t mean anything. At this point the Pacers can’t afford to cut someone and pay them millions not to play. That would be the worst PR move of all after the unpopular CIB deal that morons call a bailout.

by donnyfher on Sep 3, 2010 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Its also possible Rolle doesn't get signed

I could see him playing a year in the DLeague if we don’t sign him. He is not that high of demand.

by kennythered on Sep 3, 2010 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

TJ Ford has been rumored to be cut ever since the Collison trade and him not accepting a buyout. I think Solo would be most likely if they think Rolle has more potential, but either way anyone getting cut who didn’t get arrested is going to look bad for the Pacers.

by donnyfher on Sep 3, 2010 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

If we could get our mitts on Randolph

McBob is bye-bye, and Rolle goes to D-Leauge… them’s is my predictions.

I hope your right 18 year olds trying top be adults … can be sketchy

it sure has been quite …… hope that means this situation is going to go away w/ him being a pacer and foudn innocent

by Man of Pace on Sep 3, 2010 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

We need to just make a move for Rudy without including a first rounder

I believe this could be done. I would be willing to take on a couple years of Andre Millers contract. Portland probably only has Miller’s deal that they would be willing to move. CHA still wants a PG, so maybe a 3way including them with Dampier’s unguarantee deal could get it done.

Then we could proceed to flip Rudy to the Knicks. I’d even throw Tyler, or just about anyone, in with Rudy to get Randolph.

If we really do make a move like this one, the first rounder needs to be protected for a few years. I get the feeling that one injury could make us a team that drafts in the top 5 even if with have Anthony Randolph. With that said, maybe in 2 years we will be on more stable ground and giving up a pick would not kill us.

Josh Smith is a name that has been brought up a bunch, but Randolph is a perfect fit here. If we can get this done, it needs to happen.

by kennythered on Sep 3, 2010 1:08 PM EDT reply actions

I really don't know much about Randlph

Other than him being one of those young uber prospect type guys and that GS people didn’t really rave about him upon leaving. Just glad to hear the talk from Bird and Morway about still pursuing trades wasn’t just talk.

by IndyPacers on Sep 3, 2010 1:15 PM EDT reply actions

No thanks

Love Randolph’s potential/physical tools, not much else. He has a surly attitude, and he’s already shown a habit of missing games with nagging/serious injuries. I’m certainly not saying the Pacers have better options right now at PF, but if they stay patient they very well could have better options through FA or the draft next offseason. I doubt Larry stays patient, though. He wants to make a move right now to get this thing going again.

Years of mediocrity, expiring contracts, a likely lockout for at least part of next season, positive momentum from the Collison trade; All of that creates a sense of urgency to do something now.

by Hinrich10 on Sep 3, 2010 1:29 PM EDT reply actions

I understand where you're coming from, but at this point I think the team need to swing for the fences.

Even if the current squad maxes out their talent the ceiling is probably Eastern Conference Semifinals. Randolph may turn out to be nothing, but he’s shown glimpses of being special. If he could actually realize that, the Pacers might actually be a force.

by SethGrandpa on Sep 3, 2010 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Surly attitude is required to win in the NBA

If polled guarenteed Dale Davis is a top 3 all time Indiana Pacer (not including aba) and he was one of the surliest dude in the leauge for a year or 2 ….

Pacer fans have bcome such pussies they probably would balk at a trade for a Dale Davis type player now-a-days ….

by Man of Pace on Sep 3, 2010 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Dale had a surly attitude on the court. Randolph has a surly attitude with coaches, management, etc. Granted, he was dealing with the Warriors, and they’re a mess of an organization, but it’s certainly not a good track record to have as young player. He already has a little bit of the “entitlement” card in him, and I don’t think it’s something that should be completely ignored. Would I hate Randolph coming over? No. I’d give him a chance as a fan. But there are some warning signs, including his propensity for injuries which you all conveniently ignored.

Overall, I like Randolph, but I like a potential top-5 to top-10 pick more.

by Hinrich10 on Sep 3, 2010 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Its a good risk

given that its a protected first rounder, so if someone gets hurt and we are drafting 1-15th in year 1, 1-10 in year 2, or unprotected in year 3, we don’t have to move it.

by kennythered on Sep 3, 2010 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Lame.

That would’ve been so sick. Can’t we offer a bit more?

by SethGrandpa on Sep 3, 2010 1:29 PM EDT reply actions

Foster

Jeff is the only guy on our roster Donnie would probably want … because he drafted him and can still remember him

This makes me wish Isiah Thomas was still running the Knicks …..

by Man of Pace on Sep 3, 2010 1:32 PM EDT reply actions

If NY wanted to move Randolph

You’d think they’d have more interest in our first for him than Fernandez and wouldn’t even involve Portland. If they want to land Melo a top 15ish pick added to whatever package would be more enticing to Denver. Not that I’d encourage doing that from our side, like I said before, don’t know enough about Randolph, jus’sayin.

٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶ The sky is falling!

by IndyPacers on Sep 3, 2010 1:36 PM EDT reply actions

Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry to the Pacers. TJ Ford, Jeff Foster, and Rudy Fernandez to New York. Portland get our 1st rounder.

by B-Huse on Sep 3, 2010 4:55 PM EDT reply actions

That sounds reasonably fair

even though I hate Eddy Curry, he is expiring and Anthony Randolph seems like he’d be a really good fit here. He was stuck in GS with Don Nelson (notorious rookie hater) jerking his minutes around and Indiana would be a much better environment for him and I think he’d thrive here. If this trade did happen, we wouldn’t have that high of a pick next year

by bigdawg9292 on Sep 4, 2010 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I've seen him play a couple times...

…but IDK if this is the guy I’d like to have. We have all kinds of finess players already. Let’s get a big man who’s a dog and likes to bang, mix it up, rebound, and enforce. Someone in the mold of Perkins in Boston. We have scorers, we need that Dale Davis kinda mentality and play on the court…just my humble opinion.

I'd take that contract

For our expiring deals if possible.

We really lack a rugged defender/rebounder type on this roster.

That's a horrible idea

Varejao isn’t worth close to that much money for being a good role player, Maxiell would be a much better value

Wasn't aware of contract details...

…I guess I was trying to think of the kinda player I’d like to see down low to compliment what Roy does….kind of a garbage collecting player, rebounder, and defender that gets on other teams nerves.

Dale Davis'

Can’t exist in today’s NBA, too wussy and protects stars. Don’t forget he could put the rock in the cup at the rim. He was more than just a banger..

+1. I always loved Dales game.

Today’s NBA is kinda wussified, but there are a few guys out there who get some lee way in that enforcing department.

I agree we need an enforcer

If given the GM roll of the Pacers, one of my first deals would be landing Jason Maxiell to be an enforcer and first big off the bench. He’s only making 5mill per and he brings much more to the table. But I do really like your idea of our frontcourt getting tougher. I also think Psycho T will bring some toughness that may shock some.

With that said, we would still need a starter even if we had Max or Varejao (who I think is way overpaid and wouldn’t touch with a 20ft pole) and I really like Randolph’s game. I know you may have seen him, but I imagine him being a real contributor this season and for a while moving forward. I do not feel Randolph is a scorer and would bring the mentality and intangibles that you want. He plays with tons of heart and though he gets out of control at times and a bit emotional, he is like the energizer bunny on the court and just keeps going at all times. He does block some shots and though he is slight of frame, can enforce with his length and athleticism. If we want him, we better deal for him before the year, because his value is about to sky rocket in a few months, IMHO.
