Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

I'm not giving up on this Josh Smith thing.

The most complicated and perfect way to bring Josh Smith into a Pacer uniform has been concieved. It's a four team deal, check it:

Atlanta gets:

Carmelo Anthony

Renaldo Balkman

Desagna Diop

Charlotte Gets:

TJ Ford

Mike Dunleavy

Denver Gets:

Jamal Crawford

Brandon Rush

Erick Dampier

Jeff Foster

Indiana Gets:

Josh Smith

Kenyon Martin

ALSO: Add draft picks accordingly to make Denver agree.

Why Atlanta does it: The Hawks have a formula for winning and it isn't adding up. All their chips seem to be down there's no way the make it past the eastern conference finals. Adding one of the top players in the league can't hurt. Balkman can play a light version of Josh Smith's D, but nothing close to his offense. Diop is a throw-in/ grabage minutes at center.

Why Charlotte does it: They need a point guard and don't wanna pay Diop 6 million for 2 more years. It's that simple.

Why Denver does it: If they need a salary drop this is the way to do it. No more paying for Balkman's 3 year contract who's fallen out of favor with George Karl. They don't take a contract that exceeds this year and Dampier's 13 million can be dropped before this year. Also, like I said this isn't enough to let Melo go but if you threw on a pick or two from various teams that would really spruce it up.

Why Indiana does it: Their need at the 4. Martin's 16 million dollar contract just fills in for Foster's and Dunleavy's cause it expires after this year too. We also trade away four players and get back only two. That makes an option of bringing back Earl Watson with the mid-level exception and finally signing Magnum Rolle.

This trade cannot be made until September 13th.

too lopsided against denver

even if we gave them an unprotected #1 and atlanta gave them an unprotected #1, denver is not getting nearly enough for melo. throw in another #1 and paul george, and they might listen. even if this were to work, this is too much to give up for melo.

Harper's on Miller, McKey, gets in to Miller for the win and...

Hail to the Orange.
Hail to the Blue.
Hail Alma Mater,
Ever so true.
We love no other,
So let our motto be
Victory, Illinois, Varsity.

Yea I was thinking that, but realistically chances are that they’re not gonna get as much back for Melo. If you’re gonna rebuild though you need expiring contracts and this a lot of them (including cutting 13 million immediately). Also this is just a base deal. Tweaks can be made. I don’t think they’re gonna get much better than this though. It’s rumored the Nets would give up a few players plus Brook Lopez but that’s hard for me to believe, there’s no point in trading for Melo with no pieces left. Also don’t think the Clippers would give up Gordon, Aminu, and Kaman.

We could get J Crawford and J. Smith

I think we could be a fourth seed with those 2!!!

Trades

Any trade for Melo, or J. Smith, or any other big name is most likely going to need to involve Danny Granger. We’ve seen some crazy things happen where good players are given away for practically nothing, I won’t dispute that. But generally, and realistically, when discussing big names in trades teams are going to want big names or good, verifiable young talent + draft picks in return.

spot on

Danny Granger would have to be on the table to make either of these probable. I for one would not trade DG to get Anthony, because Anthony wants to go play in a big market. We would be giving up a SF that is comparable, cheaper, and loyal for a 1 year renatl on Anthony. That is an untenable situation.

Now Danny Granger for Josh Smith might not be as bad. It would actually be a fair trade that would help both teams. The kicker would be Josh Smith’s desire to play here. The most underrated factor about DG’s value is he wants to be here. That is a rare thing for a star caliber player.

I don’t think selling high on Danny Granger is unthinkable, but I do think its a bit early for either of these players, and certainly a waste for Anthony.

They won’t trade melo for a straight salary dump. If they wanted to do that, they could just wait until his contract expires at the end of the year. Getting back a bunch of expiring contracts accomplishes nothing on their end.

And none of the firsts round picks to throw in would be any good. Charlotte and Atlanta are probably playoffs teams. Are pick will be in lower lottery most likely.

The guys we're shipping out for studs in all these proposals

Makes me curious how we haven’t won over 36 games in what, 4 years? I mean clearly these are very good players since we can get that kind of return…right? This stuff wouldn’t even happen on a video game.

I love my Pacers

and we are all friends through the love of our team, but you guys need to put yourselves in the shoes of these other teams. Why would Denver do this?

With that said, maybe, if Atlanta flops during the regular season, we might be able to get Smith or Horford from them if they decide to blow things up. So, if you really feel Josh could help, or Horford for that matter, your second favorite team should be who ever is playing ATL next season.

I guarantee all of you, that if Denver trades Melo, they will not get even close to a return in talent. Denver is looking to start over if they get rid of Anthony. A couple of draft picks and a straight salary dump of 13 million is a start. 75% of you guys really don’t take into consideration how badly these organization seek to drop payroll.

I wouldnt trade Danny either though. He’s cheaper and he already is commited to Indy. Melo’s new wife would also kill herself here.

Little side trade: Would anyone do Brandon Rush for Jason Thompson? Both guys have gotten into some trouble but we need bigs help and they need shooters.

by B-Huse on Aug 31, 2010 8:24 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t remember Jason Thompson getting into trouble. Could you remind me of what he did? I love the idea of Rush for Thompson, which makes me think it’s probably not realistic.

We’ll have to see how the season plays out, but I actually like the core of Collison, Granger, and Hibbert, and I hope the Pacers will be smart enough to reserve the flexibility to keep those guys around if they perform well together. In other words, if getting a PF right now means the Pacers won’t be able to keep one of their core in the long run, I’d rather wait. Plus I’m awfully curious if the Hansbrough, McRoberts, Rolle trio at PF can be adequate.

Gah I can’t find the article but I wanna see that he got in a fight at a club or something. They have also just loaded themselves with bigs. They have 1 pure shooting guard in Fransico Garcia. Then for the bigs they have Whiteside, Cousins, Thompson, Landry, and Dalembert. Hell throw in a second rounder if we have to.

Mkay nevermind… they were at a nightclub when shots were fired… I thought they really had somethin to do with it…. damn. Kinda doubt he’s available now….. Rush and a 1st? lol

From what I have read at SacTown Royalty

Thompson would be available. For Rush? Thats another question. The guys over there are pretty insightful and would tell you value for both Thompson and Rush…
