Danny Granger: 6th Best Small Forward According to Dwyer

If you go to Ball Don't Lie, you would have seen Kelly Dwyer's 1-30 player position rankings.

He has finished the small forwards and Danny Granger came in at #6. Please remember, this means he expect Granger to be the 6th best small forward NEXT year as these are projections. What he said:

"Indiana's go-to guy slipped a bit in 2009-10, dropping his points per game average down nearly two ticks and shooting the worst percentage of his NBA career. The good end to that is that Danny still dropped over 24 a game, and that at age 27 upon entering October's training camp, he'll be just about ready to enter his prime. Now all he needs is some help. Lots of it."

The small forwards ahead of Granger? Iggy, Gerald Wallace, Carmelo, Durant, and Lebron.

What say you IC... is this a fair ranking? Too high? Too low?

Personally I say he is at worst 6th best, but could easily be as high as number 4 and I think should be above Iggy at number 5. But he is definitely in that 2nd tier... you got Lebron/Durant/Carmelo, and then you got Wallace/Iggy/Granger/Pierce.  (well to be honest, I think Carmelo is in tier 1.5... not near lebron and durant but better than the next 4.)

4th at worst

Durant/Lebron are without question better.

Melo… I used to think he was amazing too but I’m starting to think he’s just part of their ‘class hype’, how he and Bosh get extra praise because they are the same class as Lebron and Wade.

There’s no way Iguodala or Wallace are better than Granger.

At worst 4th.
At best 3rd.

I think those two get the nod due to their defense

Danny doesn’t play too much, then again, his team is horrible and he has a horrible defensive coach.

He is a better offensive player than both of those two though.

by dbcb on Aug 23, 2010 7:09 PM EDT up reply actions

but it is very close like I said in the OP.

I’d probably take granger over those two if I was building a team. I don’t see what lots of people see in Iggy though.

by dbcb on Aug 23, 2010 7:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Is Iggy that good a defender?

I’ve never heard anything about his D.

by SethGrandpa on Aug 23, 2010 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Not all-defense team calibre or anything

But he’s pretty solid. Better than Danny at least.

Danny

is a very underrated shot blocker in my opinion.

by captain flitzy on Aug 24, 2010 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Iggy is definitely not better than Danny and Wallace probably isn't either (though he could based on D).

However, I don’t see how you can rank Pierce below Danny. He’s old, sure, but he’s played in important games and has those big time reps that Danny lacks.

And of course Melo, KD, and LBJ are above him.

by SethGrandpa on Aug 23, 2010 7:12 PM EDT reply actions

I think he is expecting a decline, which is fair. He has a lot of games and minutes on that body and his numbers were down last year a bit.

by dbcb on Aug 23, 2010 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

ITs a preview for a whole season though, not just one game. I would agree with the one game thing.

by dbcb on Aug 24, 2010 1:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Maybe last year

But I’m not taking PP any more. To many flawed performances in the playoffs.

by kennythered on Aug 26, 2010 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

He is 4th

I am not nearly as high on Danny as many others but, for only next year, I’d make Danny 4th on this list.

I do, however, think if you tier this position you find:
T1: Lebron and Durant
T2: Melo
T3: Danny, Gerald, Iggy
T4: Gay, Deng, Pierce
and so on…

by kennythered on Aug 23, 2010 7:47 PM EDT reply actions

How does Danny suck at defense??

Could of sworn he was known for his defense when he came into the league!!!!!!!! He still got his D but you cant expect him to still be the guy to come on the court and guide the next teams best player (as he did alot in the pass when that was his roll ) and still be able to carry the team every night. The 4th qtr is the only time star players and take that responsibility of guiding the other teams best player. Iggy better than Danny??? Never ever!!!!!!! He can barely shoot the dam ball. He is more athletic but thats about it.

by the pac on Aug 24, 2010 12:28 AM EDT reply actions

the position feels right…but at the same time, i’d take him over AI or crash. i don’t get how that works in my head, but it does.

I would have to think that Granger's offense is a step above those two.

Wallace has a clear advantage defensively to both Iggy and DG, who I think play on a fairly similar level of defense. I think DG can be a better defender than he has been, of course some defense can be attributed to the players around you and the quality of players you guard. Idk if it’s homerism but I feel that DG is 4 behind Melo, Durant, and Lebron.

by infinityzero.systemerror on Aug 24, 2010 1:37 AM EDT reply actions

I put Danny and Rudy Gay in the same class of player

Danny shoots a little better. Rudy Gay gets to the rim a little better.

Lebron and Durant are a tier 1
Melo 1.5
Pierce is a tier 2 guy
Danny, Rudy, Iggy, Gerald Wallace all slot in somewhere after that top 4 IMHO.

I cant compare

Danny to Gerald Wallce, they are such different players. I think 6 is pretty spot on though. He is a far cry from Lebron, Durant, and Melo though. Very big gap between them

by captain flitzy on Aug 24, 2010 12:48 PM EDT reply actions

I think there is a very big gap between lebron and durant and everyone.

Lebron

Durant

Melo
the other 4

by dbcb on Aug 24, 2010 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions

my huge spaces didn't work lol

but lebron is def above durant, but from durant to melo is a huge difference.

by dbcb on Aug 24, 2010 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Melo really that good?

Melo might be above Granger, but I wouldn’t say that gap is that wide. It’s highly doubtful that Melo will ever match his physical talent with the mental focus it takes to be a winner. The last two years of Nuggets playoff performances attest to that! I think he’ll make an all-star caliber second fiddle at best. Granger on the other hand has never had players around him, but seems to increase his level of focus, determination, and will to win over the past few seasons. I think we see Granger step it up even more this year and silence the doubters. Will he be considered better than Melo? Probably not, but a lot closer that people would’ve ever guessed. Granger will not be able to carry a team, but I believe will be an All-Star component. In that sense I think he and Melo are the same.

by Funkerdown on Sep 1, 2010 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

oh wait

you meant a huge difference btwn melo and durant! Yes, I definitely agree with you there. It makes for a good matchup, but Durant is lightyears beyond Melo in focus and determination.

by Funkerdown on Sep 1, 2010 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Durant will usurp Lebron

Either this year or next year as the best playing in basketball.

by kennythered on Aug 26, 2010 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Grangers top5

Durant/ James/ Melo T1

Granger/ Wallace/ Pierce T2

I’ve got Durant ahead of James. James is stronger, but Durant s a better shooter.

by Justin Arnold on Aug 24, 2010 2:32 PM EDT reply actions

Raning Durant ahead of james is… wow.

hes a dick, but durant doesn’t paly near the defense that James does

by dbcb on Aug 24, 2010 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Bro

Pierce is way too old and Melo is not in their same class.

by kennythered on Aug 26, 2010 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm not mad at DG33's ranking, seems bout right

It’s gonna be interesting to see where Hibby ends up on the C list. I’m guessing top 10, he is poised to break out this year!

by jantz101 on Aug 24, 2010 3:14 PM EDT reply actions

No reason he can't...

mostly role players at that position anyways.

by infinityzero.systemerror on Aug 24, 2010 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Hibby

Howard
Stoudamire
Bynum
Ming
Duncan
Jefferson
Perkins
Okur
Lopez
Nene
Okafor
Horford
Chandler
Marc Gasol
Chris Kaman
Probably Greg Oden

Would all arguably be ranked ahead of Roy at this point. However Roy being young he can probably slip into the top 15 over the next year or two.

by aaronb on Aug 24, 2010 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I can see Yao being lower than Hibby for next year actually. Chandler and Oden too. Depends if he thinks he can break out. He’d better be top 25.

by B-Huse on Aug 25, 2010 12:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Bogut would be there

I thought I had him on the list. Poor proofreading on my part.

by aaronb on Aug 25, 2010 10:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

After I typed that I looked at the centers in the league and thought, top 15. Howard, Bynum, Bogut, Chandler, Ming, Duncan, Lopez, Gasol, Kaman, and Jefferson would round out the top 10. After that, I can see Hibby thrown in based solely on the anticipated year he is going to have. Will he be top 15 after the year? Maybe not, but on potential I think he gets thrown in with the big guys.

by jantz101 on Aug 25, 2010 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions

PF and not C

Stoudamire
Duncan
Jefferson
Horford
Ill give ya okafor

by Justin Arnold on Aug 25, 2010 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Duncan can play center.

But I would say he’s a better PF. He doesn’t get the respect he deserves, it seems to me, sometimes. He should be a 1st ballot hall of famer; great defense, great offense, and he has been part of multiple champs. Stoudamire (am I the only one that thinks that looks wrong) is overrated in my mind. I seriously wonder what he would look like in a lower tempo offense, won’t get that answer any time soon. So, let’s see what he can do without Nash.

by infinityzero.systemerror on Aug 26, 2010 1:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Duncan will be first ballot no doubt

people already call him the best power forward ever or put him in that discssion

by dbcb on Aug 26, 2010 8:57 AM EDT up reply actions

This year? He really may be. Roy works as hard as anyone in the NBA, he’s in his third year, and we just got rid of Murphy who gobbles up all of his rebounds. We need some better perimeter D to keep guards from driving at him constantly. People also got on him for trouble last year, all bigs have foul trouble though.

by B-Huse on Aug 26, 2010 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Ranked above or not

and putting the contracts aside, I would bet more GMs would take Roy over Okafor.

by kennythered on Aug 26, 2010 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Okafor is a much better rebounder and defender

Not even close.

Hibbert does have a better offensive post game though. However if both players had the same contract. Okafor goes over Hibbert according to 90% of Scouts and GM’s.

" Tell me something Steve, How does a guy from Puerto Rico loose a ball in the Sun? "

by aaronb on Aug 26, 2010 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions

We’ll see this year. Last year alone I would’ve taken Okafor, if we’re throwin out contracts. If we add in contracts there’s no way in hell I take Okafor over Hibbert. We’ll see how Roy develops with a REAL pg to work practice with and grow together.

by B-Huse on Aug 26, 2010 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

90%!

Review Okafor’s numbers again. The guy isn’t the same, he is already over the hill. It wouldn’t shock me to see Roy have better numbers across the board next season.

by kennythered on Aug 28, 2010 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Seeing 90% reminds me of Paul George’s free throw . I totally forgot he shot 90.9 from the line in college.

by B-Huse on Aug 29, 2010 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions

He's 27?

Is that really over the hill? Roy has supposedly “just scratched the surface” at 23.

" Tell me something Steve, How does a guy from Puerto Rico loose a ball in the Sun? "

by aaronb on Sep 1, 2010 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions

5th

I would put, Durant LJ Melo Wallace and DG. I love Wallaces game on the boards and defensively. And I put Durant above Lebron because Durant makes the players around him better, and its easier to root for a good guy.

by Nate Sperka on Aug 24, 2010 10:10 PM EDT reply actions

Lebron didn't make his teamates better?

are you kidding me?

The dude is a prick but you CANNOT doubt his basketball ability. Durant is awesome but he isn’t Lebron (yet)

by dbcb on Aug 24, 2010 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions

He makes a point...

James is being considered as a point forward, I don’t think you can do that without making players around you better. I still believe James wasn’t born but made in a government facility for testing the effects of steroids, HGH, and selling one’s soul to the devil on pregnant women. He was meant to be a perfect soldier but all he wanted to do was play basketball and, while disappointed, they saw an opportunity to make a large sum of money and they allowed him to do as he pleased. Coincidentally, Greg Oden came from the same project, however he was too injury prone and deemed a failure, so they gave him the same opportunity as James. Oden is actually 42 years old.

by infinityzero.systemerror on Aug 25, 2010 1:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Lebron will always be the more rounded player

and will always be better at making his teammates NUMBERS better. However, I think we will see Durant become a Jordan-type killer, helping his teams get wins. It will be tough to gauge because Lebron’s team will win a lot, possibly more than OKC this year, however I see MIA’s easiest championship shot this year, yet they will have to play a great LAL team in the finals. Durant will be a top 10 player of all time, I’m not sure Lebron will.

by kennythered on Aug 26, 2010 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Hard to gauge

Granger is really hard to figure. Concerning these ratings, He completely DESTROYS Iggy and Wallace at scoring ability, but isn’t as good defensively. That said I think he has the potential to be all-defense if he focuses on it. He is very strong, quick, and long, and has averaged a block and a steal a game without really trying. You combine that with decent 3-point shooting, you’ve got a lot of potential there!! I think he still needs to find his game and who knows what will happen when he actually has players around him. Granger is a unique one for sure. I wouldn’t be surprised to see his scoring numbers dip again, but others increase. I see him as a Paul Pierce type of player who is incredibly good, but needs a couple of other similarly talented players to make it to the top. Nothing wrong with that!!!
