There are _____ reason to fire JOB ?
My displeasure for this team has curtailed my contributions to this site. I was just becoming to negative when discussing the Pacers. Sorry to say it but JOB is at that point too in my eyes after seeing him on NBA TV yesterday. He doesn't even like talking about his own team.
The #1 complaint I've read about Your Indiana Pacers over the past year is that JOB is possibly the worst coach ever. How many examples can we come up with legit and satire will do here's my 2 examples
1. He always looks like he is about to be forced to drink hot piss.
2. He refuses to play Roy Hibbert 30+ minutes.
Hoping for 1000 reasons to provide the Pacers in a certified letter from concerned fans.

JOB
I have to say I was a little surprised when I watched JOB’s interaction with the Orlando Summer League play by play guys (Rick Kamla and Dennis Scott). I hate to say it but I thought JOB was kind of a jerk. "We don’t have nicknames," was his response to Kamla asking about George’s 2-much-4-you moniker (based on his number, 24) and Hansbrough’s former college moniker – Psycho T. I hate to tell you JOB but if you don’t allow a little bit of fun in the workplace, you’ll find your staff: A. not liking you very much; B. not liking each other very much; and C. not working very hard because they don’t like you or their co-horts very much. This is simple stuff man. You don’t need to be Cleo the Clown but certainly, you should refrain from being Adolf as well.
He also slammed Stephenson as a wing player at Cincinnatti. Was this necessary? This isn’t something you say out loud, let alone to the media! Instead, you say, "Stephenson looked great yesterday. We are fortunate to have him on our summer roster. He’ll probably fit our system best at the point so we are playing him there for now to see how he does." See how easy that was? No need to trash the guy saying he "wasn’t very good on the wing." It is the same crap he did with McRoberts in JOB’s post game analysis of the Laker’s game last year (remember the "relevance" comment).
The great coaches know how to motivate and build chemistry. Being an a&& does neither. I think Larry should stay – I like him in charge, but c’mon your lead horse (the coach) is walking backward to lead us (if you take a minute to draw a mental picture of this, you’ll see we are being led by a horse’s a&&).

He doesn’t know anything about basketball…or more specifically, defense

#7 (or #4a)
He deliberately ruins decent players’ value right when we need them to have value the most by shuffling them out of the rotation

With so many good coaches available
Like everything else, we’ll keep our terrible one at the wrong time. Just like we have cap room at the wrong time. Just like we needed to draft a PG at the wrong time.

Nope
It’s JOB and the two former Celtics players he just hired as assistant coaches.

Not just three-pointers...MISSED three-pointers

It is “beneath” JOB to develop young players
#11
He let’s Brandon Rush “float”, when he should be cussing the hell out of him for “floating”!
#12
He wants Hibbert to play the high post and hit 15 foot jumpers – he’s 7 f-ing 2 tall! Put him under the damn basket you inverse-skunk-headed fool!
# 12 - TJ Ford
Just look at what has happened to TJ Ford’s carrer …..
TJ’s play and his value have gone down due to this bad offense run by JOB.
#14 (skipping unlucky #13 because there are two 12's)
He let’s Murphy play “O-Lay” defense!
#15
He is an inflexible buffoon who can’t alter his “system” to match his personnel.
#16
He’s got Danny chuckin’ up 3’s instead of using his “old man moves” of his (that got him on the frickin’ All Star Team) near the basket and in the lane area.
#17
He’s been playing Russian Roulette with the line up every since he’s been here! Stick with a line up and rotation you idiot!!!
#18
He benched Dahntay because he isn’t a 3 point shooter. He never has been, so why did you and Larry go out and sign him anyway?
#19
He’s trying to run Hibbert up and down the court like a frickin’ gazelle. He’s a freakin’ 7’2" post player you goofball of a coach!
I can't wait to see Hibbert firing 3's
Wouldn’t that just be grandly humorous?

Because as a player gets hot he takes him out of the game
#23
Because idiots have no place being NBA coaches. Because he never ever played in a professional basketball game.
JOB IS TERRIBLE
He is
A. Terrible at developing young talent
B. has a terrible idea of how to build team chemistry
C. Cant find a good rotation
D. Cannot and will not adapt to his players
E. Relys on the 3 ball too much.
F. Is a terrible motivator
G. has no idea how to run an offense
H. is clueless when it comes to coaching Defense.
I. His assistant coach can win with the same team and he fires him
J. wants his power forwards to be shooting guards
K. Has no clue how to coach a point guard.
ETC……
Jim Obrien is by far the worst coach in the league and he never takes blame for anything that goes wrong. He is the first one to say this player didnt do that or this player didnt do this instead of just saying I got out coached and My philosophy will never win
"philosophy"
Heh. That’s a stretch. In the words of comic store guy:
Worst. Coach. EVER.

i am probably going to get killed on here
i am not a huge fan of jim obrian these last couple of years. But he is not a jerk. I meet him coming out of morgans steakhouse at 1 in the mourning. He was nice and polite. that said, I still dont believe if he does not develope this team next year he will be gone. He is not a bad coach. His system does not fit our team at the moment. but not a bad coach, he knows his p’s and q’s. All watch him and the team this year and see where we go.
I disagree that he knows his ps and qs from the snippets I’ve heard during timeouts over the last two years where he sounds like an intramural coach. I do agree that he has a “system.” So did Mike D’Antoni (his system was/is similar) and we’ve all seen where he’s gone without an MVP-level PG. At the end of the day, O’Brien is either a bad motivator, a below-average strategist, or both, and when you lack talent on the floor you can’t afford that bush league-ness out of your coach.

i like his system...
it reminds me of Orlando’s, only we have no where near the defensive talent. You’re right though, he is a TERRIBLE motivator, not really a great leader, doesn’t really command respect. Overall though, a good guy, more of an assistant than a head coach for sure though.
~SHaFF!~
Orlando has Dwight Howard!
You don’t see Stan Van Gundy asking Howard to step back and hit the three all day. Van Gundy is a significantly better coach than JOB.

Thinking on it more...
Perhaps he is still here only to ensure that we find the lottery once more next year…Outside of that, what a waste.
#24
Insecure as he fires assistant coach who can win with the same line-up, for saying he’d have a different style.
#25
Gives Earl Watson 40 minutes per game, after trade deadline when he should be developing AJ Price
#28
Drafting Tyler. Ok, I realize this is Larry’s fault too, but JOB should have threatened that he would not have played Tyler. THis could lead to a) Larry drafting Tyler anyway and firing JOB or b) Larry not drafting Tyler(also what we want)
I don't hate Tyler.
But a point guard would be nice now.

Ruining any TJ Ford trade value(before the trade deadline) by refusing to play him, and making Earl Watson the starter
#32
Impeding Roy’s development by yanking him when he made a mistake(especially at the start of last season) causing Roy to play over-cautious, so he doesn’t make mistakes and doesn’t get yanked
This is a solid list
I’d prefer the items stick to basketball and stay away from the personal attacks on the man.
#Danny Granger
His insistence that Josh McRoberts shoot 500 3’s a day in hopes of grooming the next defenseless Troy Murphy.

philly now has avery johnson as their head coach and sam mitchell as his head assistant. we still have jim obrian. wouldn’t you take sam as our head?

The Pacers caused JOB to be fired from his last job, and the coach hired to replace him led the team to a title just a few years later.
#31
He discourages the players from expressing themselves, having fun or playing well
#32
Cause no one has liked him:
Though the 2004-05 76ers exceeded many on-court expectations, there was a great deal of behind-the-scenes tension between O’Brien, his players, and the front office.
#33
Instead of developing Price… his ass sat on the bench towards the in of the year. He should have been playing 30 mins a game
#34
He won’t tell us the truth about Hansbrough.. wtf is going on with Hans??
Playing devils advocate
I think JOB and Bird keep their jobs ONLY because the lockout is looming.
From what I have heard. During a lockout the players will not be paid.
HOWEVER all team employees WILL be paid.
So with Bird and JOB in the last year of their contracts. Mr. Simon is looking to avoid the expense of paying new coach or GM during what could very well be a protracted work stoppage.
Under normal circumstances, I think both guys should have been fired at least 2 years ago.

If this is true...
… then we have a cheap ass owner, who should sell the franchise if he doesn’t give a rip about throwing away a few seasons with a crappy coach and incompetent GM… the long term damage to the franchise should outweigh any (possible) future and short term front office salary savings… Besides, I think Simon isn’t smart enough to think this far in advance, even if it made any sense at all.

Agreed 10000000%
Unfortunately I think it might be the case. Maybe the Simon brother who recently passed was the one who had a passion for the Pacers.
Too many recent moves, (CIB situation, installing an unqualified local legend to run things, keeping fan faves like Foster, pining for Gordon Hayward, etc.) seem to point that the bottom line is more important than being competitive.
It’s the PK Wrigley model for Sports Franchise ownership.
