Troy Murphy Counterpart Production
This is a response to a question from FortWayneKarl in the comments of the Troy Murphy Player Review. I couldn't figure out how to insert an image of the graph I made in the comment section so I just created a new FanPost.
An Interesting Stat Would Be...
How well the guy Murphy was guarding did against his league average for points and rebounds… Then rank that against the other PFs in the league – bet Murphy would be at or near the bottom of that list! - FortWayneKarl
If you check out his player page at 82games.com you can see his counterpart production broken down by the minutes he played at each position. I don't have PF league averages for everything category but I have some from my Pacers and Wins Produced Post.
Here how how he shakes out for what I have:
As you can see opposing Power Forwards were better than average against Murphy in every category except assists and blocks.
Addressing some of the follow-up comments, here is the same graph for Roy Hibbert:

It makes sense that opposing Power Forwards would have lower block totals because Murphy is just chucking three’s all day. They are harder to block. And the assist numbers are down because it would be foolish to pass the ball when you have Murphy guarding you.
thanks but,
we did not need those stats to tell you he is softest forward in the league
It would be interestign to see Hibbert’s numbers in that stat machine
Hibbert, actually
Is maybe worse. I’m really not sure how they factor these other than they appear to be averaged over 48minutes. But, they had “counterpart” stats only for the center position for Hibbert.
They had stats for counterpart for all three front court positions for Hibbert. So, I’m not sure if they calculate these numbers when they are playing against players listed at a certain position or when they are playing at a certain position.
But, anyway, Centers against Hibbert actually had better numbers than against Murphy. And, centers against Hibbert had about the same numbers as PFs against Murphy, and I think most would agree that there are many more productive PFs in the league right now than Centers.
So, gleam what you will
peac.e
That might be typo
I think you meant that Murphy has counterpart stats for all three frontcourt positions. This is because he played minutes at each position at some point this year. I updated the FanPost above and added the same graph for Hibbert and it looks just as depressing as Murphy’s. The average numbers come from Dave Berri and the Wages of Wins. They are the same ones from the Pacers and Wins Produced.
