Potential Draft Targets

This years draft is deep I mean Really DEEP with talented Power Forwards. For the Pacers, this is great, that is definitely one of the teams biggest needs. And since I don't think we can land Wall or Turner, I'm pretty much counting on  getting a big guy.  Even though we just drafted Hansbrough, I don't think he will ever be more than a high energy guy off the bench who can give 20 solid minutes a night. I really hope that Larry Bird goes after Derrick Favors. Yes, he is still raw, but he oozes star potential. Cousins wouldn't be bad, but I wont' even bother cause I know how Bird won't bother with anyone with a character issue. Another guy I absolutely have fallen in love with is Al-Farouq Aminu. When I watched him the other day, I noticed he was active on every play, fought hard for every single rebound, and brings a TON of energy to his teammates. Aminu also seems like a good influence. So who do you want the Pacers to draft. And remember TWO second rounders to factor in. Please share your thoughts.

I've been bad with following college basketball this year

My new week’s resolution is to try and watch these guys play at least once coming up. I need to start getting some guys on my radar so I can be surprised when their names don’t get called for the Pacers pick!

Do you realize we're sitting at a 24.5% chance of landing Top 2 right now or have Kahn drafting above us?

Don’t discount the 2 guards quite yet.

Out of the guys listed, pray we don’t take Davis or Aminu. Cousins is the best, but also has character issues, so Favors might be the pick.

What's wrong with Aminu?

I think he could be a star in the league

by DaltonS49 on Mar 3, 2010 9:04 PM EST up reply actions

he could also be a tweener who never finds a position

I’m not convinced either way on him – I wouldn’t be surprised if became an awesome glue player or a mediocre tweener.

1. Favors
2. Whiteside
3. Cousins
4. Aminu
5. Davis

Dalton you picked a wrong night to back Aminu lol. He was just a COMPLETE non-factor against Florida State tonight. When I shut it off he had no points and was 1 foul from being ejected. I like Favors the most just because he was the MVP of both the Jordan Brand game and the McDonald’s game. He’s a freak athlete and would be the perfect center in a severe run-n-gun offense, such as the Suns with former coach Mike D’Antoni. When Roy sits, you can move him to the 5 spot and have instant offense.

I also can’t stand Aminu’s lips lol. I call him “Bubba” like from Forrest Gump. Cause WOOOOOOOOOW! Lol

D Cousins

DeMarcus Cousins.

Is hands down the best player listed on this poll. He has the strength size speed, skill and the right attitude. Were not talking potential, or riding coat tails (I’m saying he’s not a program guy like B Rush) if you ask me JWall is riding his coat tails.

Honestly can you judge someone’s character that you don’t know personally and is only 18 or 19 years old.

My pick is not on the board. E Turner. I would move up from 3 to 2 to get this guy.

Worst part about this topic is → if Larry Bird s picking it will be a SUPER safe pick probably a senior that has already reached his potential and will suck in the league.

The 2 most tenured players at the top of this next draft are Monroe and Aldrich (Aldrich may stay to ensure Larry drafts him next year lol). So our odds are looking pretty bad going to New York next year for the draft. Although I really like Monroe’s game and the coaching he got at Georgetown.

Sorry for the tone but we lost by alot last night again and I stayed up way too late .supporting our team ….

I’m gonna have to disagree with you on the whole John Wall/Demarcus Cousin thing. Wall is extremely talented all the way around and has a good head on his shoulders. Cousins may be talented but Wall has the opportunity to be a once in a decade sort of player. He’s athletic as D-Wade, Moves the ball very well for a point guard, and is as fast as Rondo. I like Turner a lot too but Wall can be extra special.

Your right!

But we’re not getting the # 1 pick …. I kind of wrote him off when I realized he will play for NJ
with LeBron next year ….. Know anything about World Wide Wes?

by Man of Pace on Mar 4, 2010 4:18 PM EST up reply actions

Well I mean u never know… the Bulls got it 2 drafts ago and they were like 9th I believe… I’m not saying it’s gonna happen or anything but crazier things have happened….

by B-Huse on Mar 5, 2010 3:15 PM EST up reply actions

Don't rule out the guards...

we still have a very good chance of landing the first or second pick (just keep the losing up Pacers)….If not, I do like Favors. Seen him play a couple of times and have been impressed. Cousins NO b/c he’s a thug and def has character issues. The other 2 I like are Davis and Aminu….Wake Forest and NC have been extremely weird this season so it’s really hard to tell how good these guys are. Davis looked unreal last season and hasn’t really lived up to it this year. Aminu is raw and there are times when I hope we can draft him and other times I’m just not sure about him. I think Greg Monroe could be a sleeper though! He can do a lot for a pick man, shoot an outside shot…handle the ball, rebound, etc.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed that we’ll see Turner or Wall here next season!

by BringbackReggie#31 on Mar 4, 2010 9:00 AM EST reply actions

I really want Turner at this point. I think Wall has great speed and he’s a good player but I just think Turner can do more. He can rebound, pass, and score. I think if you pair him with Danny you can afford to have a point guard who just distributes and doesn’t worry about his own numbers, someone like a Steve Blake. I’m actually hoping we get the second overall so we aren’t forced to make a decision that we’ll probably screw up.

by ThirtyOne on Mar 4, 2010 11:15 AM EST up reply actions

It’s hard man. This franchise has done little to nothing right over the last 5 years. Even when the do something right (draft Roy Hibbert) they ultimately screw it up(Roy doesn’t fit the system of the coach). It’s really hard to be this bad.

by ThirtyOne on Mar 4, 2010 1:16 PM EST up reply actions

I think

if we can remain in the top 4 we are guaranteed a future All-Star. This draft, as stated, is really deep.

Wall, Turner, Cousins, Favors any of them will do especially Wall or Turner (who can also play PG)

by HoosierHoops14 on Mar 4, 2010 11:54 AM EST reply actions

Don’t forget Wesley Johnson…. and if Hassan Whiteside puts in a lot of practice he could be great as well…. having the twin towers of Hibbert and Whiteside?… shoot over that…

by B-Huse on Mar 4, 2010 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

completely agree on those 4

I’ll be happy with any of them and anxiously worried with anyone else

Keep in Mind

Larry’s highest draft pick was 11th (last season). He’s never had an opportunity to take a “franchise player.” I don’t think he’ll go the “safe” route this year as long as Indiana stays in the top 5 of the draft. He’s going to take the player with the biggest star potential. Lucky for him, the three positions the Pacers are the weakest – PG, PF, SG (in that order) will all potentially be available.

I believe the top player (in some cases the top two players) at each position have the ability to be a team’s franchise player. At Point Guard there’s some guy named John Wall. I guess he’s supposed to be good (tongue in cheek). And, he has a dance move that is sweeping the nation! At Power Forward, there are two versitle scorers and rebounders who have the potential to put up 20/10 numbers in the NBA – DeMarcus Cousins and Derrick Favors. At 6-11, 260, Cousins is much bigger and could potentially play the center position. He plays a lot like Zach Randolph did in college. Hopefully, the baggage doesn’t come with him. If he were able to cut 15 pounds of baby-fat, he’d be a pretty nasty forward. Favors, a more natural power forward, could end up winning an MVP on offense or defense. He plays at a high level on both ends of the court. At Shooting Guard, there are two do-everything, potential franchise players – Evan Turner and Wesley Johnson (though listed as a SF, he’s 6-7, 198. He should play the 2-guard). The more I watch Turner, the more I see a player in the likes of Andre Igoudala or Dwayne Wade – someone who can lead a team in scoring, assists, steals, and rebounds on any given night. Johnson has the ability to be a Tayshaun Prince type of player who can put up points as well as rebound and play defense.

If I were to rank the aforementioned five players in franchise-ability, it would look something like this:

1. John Wall
2. Evan Turner
3. Derrick Favors
4. DeMarcus Cousins
5. Wesley Johnson

The FAULK

Turner’s a leader too like Wall…

by B-Huse on Mar 4, 2010 2:47 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed exactly in that order

maybe with Whiteside being up there too.

by HoosierHoops14 on Mar 4, 2010 3:51 PM EST up reply actions

I have doubts about Larry's abiltiy to judge talent

My gut is that he will take the best player TODAY. Which means a Jr. like Turner over any freshman on the board.

My 2 cents

1a) Wall – by far the best PG in the draft.
1b) Turner – I like him better as a 2, rather than a 1. Offers a lot more versatility than Wall, and right now the Pacers need help in lots of areas. At the moment, I’d take him over Wall(just).
3) Favors – Not as much upside or as physical as Cousins but overall the best big. Great athleticism, solid rebounder(to ofset Hibby’s lack of boards). Good defensively(Hibby stays out of foul trouble). #1 athlete coming out of HS, but hasn’t lit the world on fire at Georgia Tech.
4) Cousins – skill-wise and upside-wise, the best big in the draft, BUT I worry about his motor, and his lack of hustle. Hibbert, despite his size, isn’t a great rebounder, and if the 4 can’t rebound either, we’re gonna lose the battle of the boards every game. The thing with Cousins is this: if we can get a coach like avery johnson who is a great motivator, he could be one of the best bigs in the game. If we continue with JOB, or similar, Cousins loses interest and becomes a bust.
5) Monroe – Monroe is 6"11. Combine that with 7"2 Hibbert, and that’s some tall timber in the paint. Not athletic, but a good rebounder(to ofset Hibby’s lack of boards), solid defender(Hibby stays out of foul trouble), and solid offensive contributor, who contributes every night(unlike Cousins who in my opinion is streaky).

Why is everyone so high on Hassan Whiteside? He seems too much like Thabeet(bust) for my liking. As for Aminu, the guy’s 6"8! You want a 6"8 PF? And Wesley Johnson is like DG33 Jr. There’s no point in drafting him, when we already have DG33.

this is pretty much exactly how I feel

I might be a little higher on Cousins b/c of his athleticism and assumption that we’ll have a new coach (hopefully assumption, I know), but otherwise I feel 100% the same way on all these guys. This is my draft board too

Favors

Favors is an athletic 4 with big jumping ability. I’d feel better about him if he had a better boarding 5.

6’9 and 215 is pretty small to be an enforcer at the 4.

Upside if he fills out and polishes up his post game is Chris Bosh

median outcome is that he is an Anthony Randolf or Tyrus Thomas type of undersized athletic 4

Bust outcome is that he falls into the Julian Wright, Brandon Wright undersized 4 territory.
