Game Thread #52: Chicago Bulls at Indiana Pacers

Chicago Bulls at Indiana Pacers, Feb 9, 2010 7:00 PM EST

@
Indiana Pacers
24-2518-33
February 9, 2010 - 7:00PM EST
Conseco Fieldhouse
Radio: 1070AM WFNI   TV: Fox Sports Indiana
Probable starters:
Derrick Rose PG Earl Watson
Kirk Hinrich SG Brandon Rush
Luol Deng SF Danny Granger
Taj Gibson PF Troy Murphy
Brad Miller C Roy Hibbert

The Indiana Pacers complete their pre-All-Star break schedule tonight when they host the Chicago Bulls. This will be the first of three games between the two teams over the next 19 days. The Bulls are expected to be without Joakim Noah but do expect to have Luol Deng in the lineup and Tyrus Thomas available to play.

Thomas is at odds with the organization and was suspended one game for expressing his dissatisfaction, so his return tonight ought to bring a little edge to the Bulls and at least provide them with an energy boost. The Pacers will need to match that energy level which may be a struggle since they're 48 minutes from vacation.

PG Situation

Haven’t heard anything new so I’m looking forward to see who Obie benches.

I'd like to see TJ

get some more burn before the trade deadline.

by jantz101 on Feb 9, 2010 6:46 PM EST up reply actions

JOB going with vets at PG

Earl and then TJ. Bummer.

Claims they wanted to see what they have in AJ and now they know they have something good so he’s going with the vets over the rookie.

by Tom Lewis on Feb 9, 2010 7:01 PM EST reply actions

Im actually not too upset with that

If TJ is playing well, he should play. AJ will get his time soon. If the old TJ rears it’s ugly head however…

by jantz101 on Feb 9, 2010 7:04 PM EST up reply actions

True

the vets have to deliver or AJ will be there waiting.

by Tom Lewis on Feb 9, 2010 7:10 PM EST up reply actions

I turn the game on

And I see nothing but dread happening. Great execution, fellas.

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 7:14 PM EST reply actions

Pacers aren't playing great

But can’t look a gift horse in the mouth when this team jumps out to an early lead.

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 7:18 PM EST reply actions

Pacers up 16-13

Rose with a strong take followed by a Granger 3

by Tom Lewis on Feb 9, 2010 7:23 PM EST reply actions

Is there a record kept

for most defensive 3 second calls in a season? Hibby has to be getting close to that

by jantz101 on Feb 9, 2010 7:25 PM EST reply actions

Rose

First Bull All-Star since Jordan? That’s a piece of trivia you would’ve stumped me on.

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 7:29 PM EST reply actions

Solo

Getting minutes again it seems.

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 7:30 PM EST reply actions

Luther Head?

Thought he was out for the year, ha.

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 7:31 PM EST reply actions

Watson

Doing those Rose drives better as of late.

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 7:35 PM EST reply actions

Seriously?

Only Head would throw up a last second shot with three seconds left…

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 7:37 PM EST reply actions

looked extra strange

a runner with the cocking motion on his shot. Physics wasn’t allowing that thing to go in.

by Tom Lewis on Feb 9, 2010 7:38 PM EST up reply actions

Ford

Kind of just broke Hinrich’s ankles. Always like to see a defensive player going flying across the floor on no contact.

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 7:44 PM EST reply actions

Swoosh!

Rush pulling defense’s attentions, finds Danny for the triple!

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 7:45 PM EST reply actions

Granger

seems to have momentarily found his 3-ball stroke…

by Tom Lewis on Feb 9, 2010 7:45 PM EST reply actions

its about time

i still think he has too much lift in his shot, soften it up danny!

Bulls announcers

saying the Bulls were being obvious about going after Duns on the offensive end. Hmm, do they realize we were going after Richards on our end?

by jantz101 on Feb 9, 2010 7:46 PM EST reply actions

Don't forget the Celtics announcers

I actually yell at my tv whenever Heinson calls for fouls

by jantz101 on Feb 9, 2010 7:48 PM EST up reply actions

Still never heard Heinsohn call a game

But I’m afraid to after reading that damn Simmons book.

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 7:50 PM EST up reply actions

Generally

I can agree with his opinions. He backs them up well. It’s a good read if only because it’s a compilation of the sport if you want that so you don’t have to read all the basketball books in the world.

Two gripes I had was that he called the 86 Celtics the best team ever (surprise…) over the 96 Bulls because they were more talented. Which is true. He also said the Celtics coasted. You call a team that coasts the best ever? No way.

Then he has an all-team sort of deal chapter at the end, and chooses 01 Ray Allen as the free throw icer/three point threat in his imaginary Space Jam to save humanity series that he has taking place at MSG over Reggie Miller specifically. It bothers me that he would pick any Ray Allen over any Reggie Miller at a series to save humanity AT Madison Square Garden.

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 7:54 PM EST up reply actions

I read his article where he said Ray was a better player (clutch and otherwise)

than Reggie, but Reggie had more publicity because of the Knicks series. I don’t know Ray’s post season numbers, but I do know that Reggie’s FG% and Pts would go up in the playoffs. He just never won a championship.

by Gwen on Feb 9, 2010 7:56 PM EST up reply actions

He doesn't like Reggie

But at least he’s consistent in calling him overrated.

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 7:59 PM EST up reply actions

I’m about a third of the way through and loving every minute of it.

by indy62 on Feb 9, 2010 7:55 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

It will make your blood boil

Terribly one-sided announcer. Even Celts fans get annoyed with him

by jantz101 on Feb 9, 2010 7:52 PM EST up reply actions

Boston has the worst broadcast in the NBA in my opinion. I’d give them a Tommy Point for firing Tommy. Having to watch all the different teams broadcasts on league pass, I honestly think the pacers have one of the best.

by indy62 on Feb 9, 2010 7:58 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Haha

I agree with both points. I rarely get the Pacers announcers on league pass though. I wonder if they choose based on team records?

by jantz101 on Feb 9, 2010 8:01 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah. Always kinda pisses
me off when I getthe other team’s but it’s interesting to hear the others talk about the pacers. Of the others i’ve heard, I think toronto’s guys are pretty good, atlanata’s aren’t bad, and I think I vaguely remember liking utah’s. The knicks team is almost as bad as bostons

by indy62 on Feb 9, 2010 8:06 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Deng and Salmons

are early candidates for season high and “guy the Pacers make look like an All-Star” respectively.

by jantz101 on Feb 9, 2010 7:47 PM EST reply actions

Dahntay?

might have some luck against Deng/Salmons…

by Tom Lewis on Feb 9, 2010 7:52 PM EST reply actions

I probably won't watch any All-star stuff.

I saw parts of the dunk contest last year, and it was truly a waste of time.

by Gwen on Feb 9, 2010 7:58 PM EST reply actions

I always enjoy the three point contest

I may watch that. I also may watch the dunk in to cheer for Eric Gordon.

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 7:59 PM EST up reply actions

Well, if Howard or Robinson is in the contest again, Eric won't get past the 1st round

I felt like I was watching the old WWF last year it was so scripted. Even the acting was bad.

by Gwen on Feb 9, 2010 8:00 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

Gordon (or anyone not named Nate Robinson) has no real shot to win, but I still enjoy watching Gordon jam. One of my favorite all time dunks was an Eric Gordon slam when he was at Indiana. It’s forever ingrained in my memory.

The whole dunk contest is lame though. It’s too gimmicky with costumes and props. I just want to see dunks. In game dunks can still blow us away, and there are no capes or costumes.

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 8:04 PM EST up reply actions

If Youre not First, Youre Last

by drsuessrunner07 on Feb 9, 2010 8:05 PM EST up reply actions

is it just me or how much better would the 3 pt contest be if they included retired players?

reggie…bird…and all the other old guys. id be curious to see what happened

If Youre not First, Youre Last

by drsuessrunner07 on Feb 9, 2010 8:01 PM EST up reply actions

It's somewhat an endurance event

Getting all those shots off in a minute. Reggie was never that good at it, I do wonder how Bird would be.

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 8:02 PM EST up reply actions

Murphy's playing strong ball

I’m all for him playing up here as the deadline approaches.

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 8:00 PM EST reply actions

Hahaha!

Now that’s a last second shot!!!

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 8:07 PM EST reply actions

WATSON!

If Youre not First, Youre Last

by drsuessrunner07 on Feb 9, 2010 8:07 PM EST reply actions

im convinced if a professional player has a straighton shot like that

they will hit it from half more often than not

If Youre not First, Youre Last

by drsuessrunner07 on Feb 9, 2010 8:09 PM EST reply actions

Gah

Rose is ridiculous.

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 8:28 PM EST reply actions

That's the key Earl

get to Rose before he gets in the air.

by Tom Lewis on Feb 9, 2010 8:29 PM EST reply actions

Miller

Missing three free throws in a row. Pretty rare.

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 8:30 PM EST reply actions

Booom baby!

Granger is hitting his threes! Great to see!

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 8:31 PM EST reply actions

Pacers actually have an offensive flow going

I mean, why can’t they do this all the time? We might be all right if we did…

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 8:34 PM EST reply actions

Woo-hoo! Up 10!

How many games did we win last year? 36?

So, if we go 15-16 the rest of the way, we’ll have a better record than last year…my expectations need to be higher.

by Gwen on Feb 9, 2010 8:35 PM EST reply actions

Nice

always nice to see a jump turnover by the opponent.

by Tom Lewis on Feb 9, 2010 8:38 PM EST reply actions

Watson going right and runs out of room.

I need to keep count to how many times he does that each game.

by Gwen on Feb 9, 2010 8:39 PM EST reply actions

Actually voted in the text question for once

Gotta express love for the three point contest.

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 8:44 PM EST reply actions

Pacers

Can’t get this Bulls team far enough behind. Lot of responsive runs by Chicago.

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 8:44 PM EST reply actions

Yup

Also pulled up a last second shot with time on the clock. Man, that grates me.

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 8:48 PM EST up reply actions

Last possessions of the quarter

are not strengths for this team. (Watson’s textbook play at the end of the half excluded)

by jantz101 on Feb 9, 2010 8:50 PM EST up reply actions

Feels like

The Pacers are begging the Bulls to swoop in and take control of this game but the Bulls are having none of it.

by Tom Lewis on Feb 9, 2010 9:02 PM EST reply actions

Danny

Is getting quite good at drawing ticky tack fouls. Man, I forgot we had Hansbrough who did that too.

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 9:13 PM EST reply actions

Who

is this Hansbrough character everyone is talking about?

by jantz101 on Feb 9, 2010 9:14 PM EST reply actions

That Deng dunk

Reminded me of NBA Live 96. The SNES version. That’s how players always made layups. Just floating through the air.

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 9:17 PM EST reply actions

Well

Maybe next time this team takes the court, we’ll all be lining up for J.J. Hickson jerseys. No…scratch the maybe.

by Nathan S. on Feb 9, 2010 9:23 PM EST reply actions

The turning point IMO

we left TJ Ford in too long down the stretch. He had a flash of brilliance but over stayed his time.

by IndyDan on Feb 9, 2010 9:26 PM EST reply actions

This game is my personal most disappointing

the last half of the 4th Qtr sums up the whole season – we really do suck

by IndyDan on Feb 9, 2010 9:28 PM EST reply actions

Frustrating isnt it

You owe your son another case of beer?

by jantz101 on Feb 9, 2010 9:30 PM EST up reply actions

It sums up the season

But I don’t know how disappointing I found it. I don’t know that the Pacers played all that well for extended amounts of time anyway. They had great movement for a while, but they’re capable of that kind of play. They just never do it often enough. It’s just another L at this point. I’m nearly numb to all the losing this team and the Hoosiers give me. The Colts were a great diversion…
