Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Random trade idea

Since we have heard that Cleveland has had interest in Troy Murphy. Yet all rumors seem to suggest that Larry Bird is holding out for more than Cleveland is willing to give. May I suggest a 3rd team to help broker the deal.

Star-divide

The 3 way trade will involve the Knicks,Cavs and Pacers.

Pacers send Murphy to Cleveland for the expiring contract of Ilgauskas.Pacers then flip the expiring deal of Ilgauskas to the Knicks for Jared Jeffries, Marcus Landry and Jordan Hill.

The reasoning that this is doable is as follows.

1. Cleveland is looking to add Murphy and he has been connected to big Z in almost every rumor.

2. The Knicks are looking to clear cap space for this summers free agent market.

3. Pacers pick up an asset in Hill in exchange for taking Jared Jeffries off of the Knicks cap.

Jeffries will have value next year as an expiring deal. Not to mention the fact that he is likely a rotation player on this Pacers team. Only concern is that Larry Bird gives him a 7 year contract extension upon arrival.

Win/Win/Win

Talk about unsexy...

Aside from getting younger, we gain very little proven commodities from this trade.

I like the idea that the Pacers get a little lighter in the pocket, and get a potential starting PF in Hill. But, that’s about it. Landry is a rookie who plays at Guard Forward – one of the only positions we’re deep in. How does he get PT ahead of Granger, Dunleavy, Rush, and Jones?

The only upside to this is it would certainly make our team much worse for the 2010 season (hello, John Wall)!

Even if the Cavs don’t want to give the Pacers what has been rumored (Z, Hickson, and 2 draft picks), the Pacers have other options if they feel they MUST trade Murphy. How about this idea:

Indiana sends Troy Murphy, Dahntay Jones, and Travis Diener to San Antonio for Richard Jefferson, Matt Bonner, and a first-round draft pick.

Acquiring Jefferson was a mistake by San Antonio. He clearly doesn’t fit on that team. Murphy would be a clear upgrade over the Bonner/McDyess combo they’re rolling with now. Dahntay Jones is their new and “not-so-improved” defensive guru to replace the departed Bruce Bowen. Diener is an expiring contract, nothing more. Meanwhile, the Pacers get an all-star player to pair with Granger and a white, 3-point shooting Power Forward to replace Murphy. Bonner is also in the final year of his contract. I could handle watching Jefferson and Granger match point for point while Hibbert controls the post – especially if Bird plans on keeping OB around for a while.

Short term (hopefully), the Pacers are thin at PF until Hansbrough’s ear infection clears. They’d have to start Bonner with McBob as their only backup. But, when healthy this team can run big or small depending on the matchups. And, if they were able to nab a second, first-round draft pick, they could certainly nab a top-tier PF in an especially deep 2010 class.

I don’t know what Jefferson’s contract looks like, but I’ve been a fan of him. If the Pacers were to make a trade like that, they’d have to ship Rush or Dunleavy out. I think we know who’d end up going but not who should go.

no way

trading for jefferson would be horrible. he has a contract worse than troy (about 14 mil with 2 years left). he also averages only 12 ppg.

Harper's on Miller, McKey, gets in to Miller for the win and...

Hail to the Orange.
Hail to the Blue.
Hail Alma Mater,
Ever so true.
We love no other,
So let our motto be
Victory, Illinois, Varsity.

what about boozer? i dont like him — he talks to himself too much — but he can flat out board and score. hes a better, yet different, defender than murphy plus he’s only taking 1 million more to the end of the season. then we can have a better chance to re-sign.

Trade can’t even work. You can’t have 16 players on the roster.
