Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Our Situation May Be Better Than You Think

Everyone knows the big fish are in this 2010 free agency class. D-Wade, CB4, Lebron, Joe Johnson, and so on. But all of these teams are going all-in on players and combinations of players that they don't know will work together. Say some of these teams want to unload some of their newly acquired contracts for final year one.... they'd call the Pacers. With Dunleavy's (10 mil.), TJ's (9 mil.), Jeff's (6 mil.), and Murphy's (10 mil.), our roster will be full of desirable contracts that teams will want to get their hands on. With a good draft pick this offseason, a team loaded with Granger, Hibbert, expiring contracts, and that pick.... things could turn around pretty quickly.

Still have a long way to go

You are correct that expiring deals will be coveted by other teams. Part of the reason I have wanted Larry to hurry up with the Murphy for expiring contract, is because I think we can flip that expiring deal (Z,Kenny Thomas,Bucks slew) to the Knicks for Jared Jeffries/Eddy Curry and Jordan Hill.

Basically we could steal an asset now and still have Curry/Jeffries expiring deal to dangle next year.

true

lets just hope the pacers don’t go piston’s-style with their cap room next year and grossly overpay for two overrated players…

or we could have lined up our contracts 3-4 years ago and be where the hawks are now..

possibly losing one of their allstar w/o a means to replace him? (Johnson)

I’m not saying there are things we should/shouldn’t do. But, I’m saying we might have some great trading peices next year for teams looking to unload contracts. Add in our pick for the 2011 draft and we could really make some noise.

by B-Huse on Feb 16, 2010 1:17 PM EST reply actions

we’re probably in the same boat once granger’s contract is out..

by Ryan Berger on Feb 16, 2010 5:05 PM EST reply actions

I'm almost to the point

Where if Cleveland takes Murphy, I’d be willing to trade granger for Tmac if Tj and Dunleavy were in the deal. Say 2 first rounders coming back to us. We’d be bad for 2 years. However something to be said for having a blank slate.

Patience!

Your trade ideas keep getting wackier and wackier! Both Duns and Murph’s contracts are going to be expiring after this year. We don’t lose anything by holding on to them for a little while longer. They just need to be traded for potential, picks, or other expiring contracts. If other teams don’t want to part with them, whatever, hold out for a bit. It’s not like we are going to get better for the rest of this season.

Trading our core only sets us back more and does not accomplish anything. It is pretty unlikely we get anything, draft or potential, the caliber of Granger. It’s just going to have to be a long wait ahead of us.

Guess I'm not 100% sold

That Danny is a franchise player. The more injury prone he gets the more I feel like we should think about selling high.

That said

T-mac and salary relief is not enough. Jefferson and Flynn would have to be pondered though (IMHO).

I'd rather

try Jefferson and Rubio, who is the next Pistol Pete IMO. But word is that Rubio wants to go to a bigger market.

Yea...

Danny is great, and I think he has a great contract to boot, but could he be the best player on a good-great team? EEEHhhhh I love him to death, but like you, i don’t think he could be. (yet anyways) Those greats take sh*tty teams at least to the playoffs. (Kobe all those meddling years in LA, Wade with some of those garbage teams Miami has had) maybe it is not fair to put Danny in their class, but thats what a franchise player is, no?

I see both your guys' points

And I don’t have much to add to it!

I also don’t think he is at “franchise” level yet, but he is an All-Star caliber player, he proved that much last year, and this year with his addition to the Olympic team. But he is at a Joe Johnson, Deron Williams level which are few and far between.

Will he lead us to the promised land? Probably not. Will he be a big reason the Pacers do win a ECC or Championship? I have no doubt. Now, getting there is a whole ’nother thing…

Any team Wade or Kobe had, what LeBron has now.. all 100x better than the shit Granger has. Kobe always AT LEAST had Derek Fisher at PG and LeBron has Mo Williams. Granger has TJ Ford..

by Ryan Berger on Feb 16, 2010 11:13 PM EST reply actions

So

In your opinion is Granger a comparable player to Kobe,LeBron or DWade?

" Tell me something Steve, How does a guy from Puerto Rico loose a ball in the Sun? "

by aaronb on Feb 16, 2010 11:30 PM EST up reply actions

Those years...

Kobe didn’t have Derek Fisher. He was on the Jazz. He had Smush Parker, who I believe is out of the league now. He also had Chris Mihm, Kwame Brown, and Vladimir Radmonvic as his other main players, who all went on to do nothing before/after their time on LA. The only other solid player was Odom, who statistically, is probably really similar to what Troy brings us. That team finished with 42 wins in a tough western conference. The pacers have 18 wins and no end in sight.

I know that Kobe is better than Danny, I fully get that. But when you are talking FRANCHISE players I think it’s fair to put them in the same category, either you are or you arent. I also know the Pacers don’t have a great roster. But if you put a TRUE franchise player on this team in Dannys spot, they are in the playoffs, no questions asked. That is why I don’t think he is a franchise guy.

by captain flitzy on Feb 17, 2010 11:04 AM EST up reply actions

holes

Kobe had those junk players during his time. Agreed. Did you notice they never really did anything with those players? That none of them were on the championship team of last year?
And comparing Troy to Lamar? Come on dude. Anybody with basketball knowledge knows that stats look good on paper. NOT on the floor, which is where Troy gets deep fried on the defensive side of that floor.

Kobe took the Suns to 7 games

Dannys taking the pacers to 7th in the lottery, at worst. If you really and truly think that Danny and Kobe are in the same class, and the only thing holding Danny back is his team, than God Bless You. Only one team wins the championship, and the rest are also-rans every year. Kobe didn’t win titles by himself (as Ive pointed out here earlier, no one in the last 30 years has). But he brought his teams to the playoffs, and had some great series and battles with really good teams.

Danny has one all-star game to his name as of now. Do I hope that changes? YES. Do I hope he gets better teammates so we can see the potential of Danny in his prime come to fruition? YES. Does the fact that Danny puts up good stats on a horrible team, without it really showing in the win column impress me? To a degree. He is not Kobe, Lebron, Wade, Melo, or the like yet, not even close.

by captain flitzy on Feb 19, 2010 1:28 PM EST up reply actions

Somebody has to put up numbers on every team. No matter how bad.

Case in point. Scoring stats from some previous players.

Terry Catledge 19.4 PPG in 89/90
Tony Campbell 23.2 and 21.8 PPG in back to back seasons
Michael Adams 26.9 PPG on year
Hersey Hawkins averaged over 20 PPG 2 seperate seasons
Kelly Tripucka avearaged over 20 in 5 seperate seasons

Point being that there are probably 50 guys in the NBA that can score 20 a game and shoot 40 % from the field if they were given the free reign to do it. It isn’t as special as some people make it out to be.

Is Danny Granger a good player? Yes

Is he without question a top 30 player? No

Any comp between Granger and LeBron or Kobe is straight rose colored homerism.

by aaronb on Feb 19, 2010 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

I think Danny is a top 30 player. i mean you put any other player in this position how far are they gonna get? No where. He’s definetly not Kobe or Lebron but his talent is undeniable. If he’s not a top 30 player, please put 29 players that are better than him. Many teams fear him when he comes to town and that’s saying something. Like I said before… the similarites between him and Paul Pierce are incredible. Give him some help…. and he can be a very dengerous man.

Again...

Im a huge Granger fan, and I think he is a really really good player. I am not trying to bash him or rag on him in anyway. But I just think AaronB was right when he said he is WITHOUT QUESTION top 30. Just off the top of my head I can name the 24 guys who made the all star team, the 2 or 3 replacements, right there is 27 or so who are all in that range. . Than guys like Iguodala, Tyreke Evans, Monta Ellis, Marcus Camby, Boozer…. I personally think he is in that range somewhere, but he is not a top 15 player, hes in that next level and just as of now, i personally don’t think he is a franchise guy.
