Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Hindsight 20/20

Amidst all the frustration Pacer faithful are enduring I find myself trying to figure out where this team went wrong through this rebuilding process. I'm not exactly sure and hope you can help me, but I have it narrowed down to 2 bad decisions made by LB.

Trading Stephen Jackson PPG: 20.7; RPG: 4.80; APG: 3.8& Al Harrington PPG: 17.8; RPG: 5.70; APG: 1.4

for

Mike Dunleavy PPG: 11.2; RPG: 3.80; APG: 1.6 & Troy Murphy PPG: 14.0; RPG: 9.90; APG: 2.0

Not giving Van Gundy the money the necessary to come coach here, and settling for Obie.

I know people love T-Murder around here, but I don't. You will never convince me or anyone else this is not the most lopsided trade ever. FYI Capitain Jack is his nickname, EVERDAY we can see that we need a leader we traded him away.

Okay Dunthreevy, was hurt I'll give you that ..... don't just look at the numbers imagine having 3 options on the floor that can score rather than 2 (Jack, Al, Danny) (Danny, T-Murder)  essinetially we traded 40pts for 14.

Surly there is pleanty of debate on the above issue.

The coach issue is huge as well.

Orlando's record with Van Gundy 146 wins 70 losses 68%

Indiana's Record with Obie-1 - 90 wins 126 losses 42%.

Thoughts? should I see a Dr because I'm losing it from all this losing or does this make sense?

I will agree with van gundy 100%. I didn’t like the JOBsigning then and I hate it now. I don’t like retread coaches (van gundy wasn’ a retread… he got screwed by Riley… that was Gundy’s team)

I, however, do not agree with Jackson. At all. Not even getting into the off court stuff which was just ridiculous… I don’t think he is very good at all.

Yes he scores 20 points a game this year. But this doesn’t explain his season at all.

He is shooting 43% from the field this year… which if it continues could count as a CAREER YEAR. We are getting pissed at Granger for shot selection and shooting in what looks like a bad year based on past stats… and Granger true shooting percertant is still higher than Jacksons (.542 vs .523)

And you would think 20-4-4 would have high per… he doesn’t. Its 16.3… which if he continues would be a CAREER YEAR. For reference, Grangers bad year puts him at 18.1 per.

But man would he fit in with this offense… JOB would probably love flat footed, lazy 3 pointers at a 30% clip.

one good thing about jackson though is that his contract would have been gone by now… when does harringtons expire?

Murphy is awful but i think he can be salvaged IF bird and pull the trigger and get rid of him this year for ANYTHING + an expiring contract. A draft pick, a young guy… anything.

Agreed with Jackson

I’ll add that he is a malcontent who plays well for a new team, then a year or two later wears out his welcome. He is playing well for Charlotte now. Sooner or later he is going to be slighted somehow and will start to sulk. I’m glad to have gotten rid of him.

As far as the trade goes, I don’t have much hate for Murphy. Sure he has his defensive limitations, but he has kept us in many games because of his ability to hit the outside shot. Dunleavy on the other hand, seems like half the player he was two years ago. I don’t know if it is the knee or not, but he doesn’t seem to have much of anything to give the team, as of late.

It’s fun to look back but you never know what would’ve happened if this scenario had played out. You know the story of the guy that goes back in time and kills a fly and he come back and the whole world is different? This is the same sorta thing. At the end of the day you never know what could’ve happened…. but never signing Obie sounds like it woulda been smart.

Hindsight a little blurry

When JOB was hired the locker room was a mess. Too many years of coddling egos and varying the accountability left a sour culture among the team. Of which, Jack contributed plenty by the way. JOB’s main task when hired was to be a new sherrif, hold everyone to the same standard, establish an expected work ethic and change the culture surrounding the team. In my opinion, he did an excellent job in turning around the attitude and expectations of the players. A tough coach’s words run out of steam, though (especially in the NBA) and we’ve past that point. Plus, JOB was willing to take over the mess. Besides what choice did Van Gundy have? Of course you take the Orlando job with Dwight Howard and a great situation.

Their Hands Were Tied

The Pacers HAD to trade Jackson. Regardless of his talent, he was, and will always be, linked to The Brawl. Though I think he was just looking out for his boy Ron Ron when he when crazy in the stands, he made a poor decision that had too many negative implications on a franchise.

Jackson is the person he is today because the Pacers traded him. He was removed from the situation and could move on with his life. He never would have been able to do that here in Indy. Because the Pacers HAD to trade Captain Jack, they HAD to include Big Al. He is a fun player to watch and would probably fit better on this current team than T-Murder. Indy was forced into that move.

As far as coaches go, I’ll continue to preach that this team needs a motivational leader. Like Cornrows mentioned, O’Brien has done a masterful job of changing the environment in the locker room. But he lacks a very important skill that all NBA coaches should have: motivation. The top coaches can get the best talent in the world to improve their game and to execute offensively & defensively for a season that spans nearly 6 months.

I listened to an Avery Johnson interview on Pardon the Interruption this past week. The majority of his interview centered upon the work he did as a motivational speaker with the New Orleans Saints during their preseason preparations. He got me excited about being a Saint, even after they just defeated our beloved Indianapolis Colts! Before his interview concluded, they asked him if he wanted to get back into coaching. His response was, “I’ve always wanted to get back into coaching. It’s what I love to do.” He later went on to say, “I’m just waiting for the phone to ring!”

O’Brien did what Bird and the rest of this city asked him to do. Now, this team is ready to take the next step to getting back to greatness. However, I don’t believe O’Brien is the right guy for the job. If it’s not Avery Johnson, then it needs to be someone who’s able to push the Pacers back to being a yearly staple in the Eastern Conference Playoff conversation.

+1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bring in Avery. He is what we need. O’Brien has officially worn out his welcome with the fans and the players. I never thought he would be the savior, but I have always been in his corner I guess you could say. I am out. I am bailing. I am done. He’s gotta go, no more defending (ironic?) him, its over. Avery is the answer.
