Time to Say "I'm Sorry" to Larry Legend

Some things that people said about Larry Bird on here would make most people cry their eyes out. Many said he was the worst in the league. So for starters, let's go over the situation the Pacers were in 5 years ago.

Star-divide

The Beginning:

Players were beating up Pistons fans, getting in trouble with the law weekly, and failing in the playoffs yearly. Everyone (including fans like us) knew that we had to make a move. So Larry and Donnie Walsh made a move for Dunleavy and Murphy. Okay, maybe it was a bit hasteful to take on contracts of their stature, but still something HAD to be done abot getting Stephen Jackson, arguably the biggest trouble-maker, off this team. That took a big hit of ridding ourselves of newly re-acquired Al Harrington, but at the time fans were pretty much demanding that something needed to be done.

The 2008 draft:

On the eve of the 2008 draft, the Pacers were able to rid themselves of Jermaine O'Neal (and his 20+ million dollar per year contract) for TJ Ford, Rasho Nesterovic, and the rights to Roy Hibbert. Since then Jermaine has been mediocre while the contract of Rasho Nesterovic gave us salary help just after one year, TJ Ford has had his ups and downs, but then there's this guy..... umm yea, Roy Hibbert. The player who has worked his absolute butt off for the last three years to add his name with the likes of Andrew Bogut, Brook Lopez, and Al Horford. Roy has also helped rejuvenate the dying fan base with unwavering hustle, unrivaling loyalty, and the addition of Area 55.

A day later, during the draft Larry Bird trades the rights to Jerryd Bayless for Brandon Rush, Josh McRoberts, and Jarrett Jack. Too bad that the Raptors came in and stole Jarrett Jack, because this trade was an absolute steal when you look back on it. While Jerryd Bayless was recently traded to the New Orleans Hornets for showing rare glimpses of brightness, the other side of the coin is much brighter. Josh McRoberts has become a part of a rare breed of intense hustle players who fly around and get blocked shots and can hit the occasional shot, something every team needs.Jarrett has shown incredible leadership and toughness for someone his age and like I said it would've been great if he could've stayed around. Rush has had his ups and downs, finally seems to be getting it (at least on the basketball court). Early in his career he floated around making jump shots and tried not to get in anyones way. Even though we;ve only seen him in one game he was incredibly aggressive and used his talents to the fullest.

The 2009 draft:

Much less active then the year before, Larry Legend goes for the college legend, Tyler Hansbrough. This was a ballsy move. Pretty much the whole world, including myself, thought Larry was crazy for this. He's too slow, he can't jump, he can't shoot. But, everyone forgot one thing that Larry knew..... this guy can flat out play the game. Everyone needs an intense and powerful force on the inside and Hansbrough is a truck. There have been some games that he keeps us in with his smart play and incredible effort. To be honest with everybody, I wanted Earl Clark and look how he's turned out.

The Outcome:

Larry was stuck with a bad team with bad contracts. Many GM's would've tried to make the quick fixes and hope that their fans fill a couple seat. But, Larry Bird wanted a contender. With A LOT of patience Larry has manuvered this team into one of the best situations in the league. He drafted Danny Granger (Beast), Roy Hibbert (Beast), Tyler Hansbrough (Scary man), and Paul George who I feel could be a player like Rudy Gay. He traded for Josh McRoberts (great role player) and got an absolute steal with Darren Collison, who learned a lot from Chris Paul. So with all this talent you would think Larry would've had to take on some horrible contracts... but yet we have over 25 million dollars coming off of the books next year. Not only has Larry's plan worked but it's worked masterfully. So give Larry the credit, because he has upheld his name, as Larry Legend.

And...

We’re 3-3 and may sneak into an 8th seed. There’s no denying we’re in much better shape than when Donnie Walsh left (who’s oft praised but was the architect of the MurphLeavy trade, depending on who you ask, and abandoned ship), but that’s almost a given with so much time passed. The real measure for Larry, for me anyway, is how he manages the cap space this summer. It’s just our Pacer luck that the first summer, well, ever, that we’ll have huge money to spend there’s a looming lockout and if the owners get their way pretty major salary structure changes coming. We’re obviously not a franchise that can afford to give out a bad contracts (one a lot bigger than Dahntay Jones I mean). Not only is it how we spend the cap money, but we manage to do that coupled with keeping Big Roy, and further down the road Collison should he pan out like we all hope. Swinging some solid deals is one thing, keeping the fruits of those deals is quite another. I absolutely trust Larry in regards to his eye for team building, I strongly believe if James Dolan owned the Pacers he’d be capable of building a dominant team, it’s a lot harder to do that in today’s NBA when you’re on a budget. I just think this post is premature, sneaking into the playoffs while having some promising youth would be nice, it’s how we come out looking after this summer that makes or breaks Larry Legend in my book.

Kudos sir, it takes a big man, Kudos....

Unfortunately some people like Mr. IndyPacers, I fear it’ll never be good enough, last year its what he does the past offseason this year its what we do this offseason, and im sure next year his deciding factor will be something else. Some times we need to sit back and appreciate what we have and what weve come from. So again Kudos BHuse.

Won’t be any sneaking, we’ll be storming into the playoffs!!! Battling for the division crown. Go Pacers!!! Look forward to being there WITH YOU for the ride, the ups and the downs.

Not sure

what I should be praising him for. This team is probably still going to finish with a losing record and JOB is still the coach. Sorry there’s not enough he’s done right for me to worship Larry at this point.

But here’s what I’m getting at….. A lot of people on here have thrown him under the bus for pretty much every move he has made. With the Jermaine trade many people said we didn’t get enough and that TJ has failed….okay but we got Roy Hibbert and he’s been everything we could’ve asked for and more. Jerryd Bayless trade, we should’ve never given up a guy with his talent for Rush, even though we got Brandon Rush, Josh McRoberts, and Jarrett Jack. Two out of those three players have played better than him in their careers and Brandon Rush has played about just as well. Tyler Hansbrough has played like a mad man and fought harder than any other player in the NBA to get boards and loose balls. Then, after Darren Collison broke out after Chris Paul taught him the game, Bird acquires him. I’m not saying he’s perfect. I don’t like O’Brien either. But, after countless attempts to smear his name, it turns out that he did the right thing. So I’m not asking you to think he can cure cancer with the touch of his skin…. you guys see waaaay too much black and white. The guy time and time again has done the right thing and has turned this team into a very likable, high energy, and young group who seem to really like each other.

I’ll praise Bird once he hires the right coach for this group of players. I’m loving the players we have, but the JOB isn’t get the most out of them.

one crazy, NBA jam like quarter and everything is peachy?

people forget what is was like to get spanked by the winless sixers a couple games ago?

by dbcb on Nov 11, 2010 5:27 PM EST reply actions

Yeah

I’m generally positive about Bird, and I like where this team is going, and I’m usually a fan of his moves, even though I think they’ve been misguided thanks to Obie, but we’re not there yet. We’re going to have more games like the Sixers game…it’s unavoidable. Things aren’t suddenly peachy, but I’m on board with not continuously punishing Bird for his moves, but I maintain he could still be doing a lot worse.

by Nathan S. on Nov 11, 2010 7:21 PM EST up reply actions

Bird made some mistakes. He isn’t the worst GM in the world and isn’t the best but he is in the middle. We should have full out rebuilt a few years ago but what is done is done. The collison trade really redeemed him in my eyes.

but as long as obie is around I iwll continue to be pissed at bird. Sometimes he refuses to admit a mistake. I really really wanna see this team with a real coach.

by dbcb on Nov 11, 2010 8:03 PM EST up reply actions

It wasn’t just that quarter, he has really put us in a great position this year. We have some damn good, young players with great attitude. Add some amazing expiring contracts and “PRESTO!” We have one of the best roster situations in the league. Another point, the Sixers did not make a qualifying offer for Thaddeus Young…. Would you guys like to pick him up for I’d saaaaaay…… 5 million?

Wait till the season is over...

before your saying “I’m Sorry”. Six games really isnt enough to base on how the season is developing. Didnt the Pacers just get blown out in one of those six games? Really no different in the past, as the Pacers are dependent on the jumpers. Just as last year, we win the games we are hitting and lose big when were not. Unfortunately the Pacers are not very good shooters in JOB’s system so this translates into loses. I still vote, Larry No Longer a Legend, as one of the worse in the NBA. .

check it out..

http://greenstreet.weei.com/sports/boston/basketball/celtics/2010/11/11/nba-power-rankings-1111/

A power ranking that doesnt have an undeserving Heat team at the two spot, Looks about right to me at this point in the season.

All the Malcontents will be apologizing to Bird, Hans, Rush etc. here real soon, because it will be undeniable.

Unnecessary inconsistency at the top by getting a new coach this year for a young team starting to gel would not be a smart move. Im not a huge fan of JOB either but keeping him around going into a potential lockout is the prudent move as well.

by Justin Arnold on Nov 12, 2010 2:41 AM EST reply actions

I've never had a problem with Larry for the most part.

Was I unhappy initially when he drafted Hansbrough? Yeah, I thought there were more talented guys out there and different positions we needed to be filled. But, I got over it because I thought to myself “He’s a basketball player. Even if he isn’t the greatest, I still think he will have a fine career. Especially in a city and on a team like ours.” I was happier initially with the Bayless pick and was disappointed when we traded him to the Blazers for Rush, Mcbob, and Jack. I’m happy with McBob now and Jack was pretty good, but Rush is maddening and I’ve come to dislike him greatly. I just always have the thought that maybe if we had just kept Bayless he could have developed and become our PG of the future. The signing of JOB was surprising, but I can understand it because I don’t think a lot of ppl wanted this job considering it would be a short term job for them you’d have to think, considering we were rebuilding whether he admits it or not. Aside from the Rush thing and JOB, I’m fairly ok with the work Larry has done.

I think his successes have outweighed his failures

You mention a lot of the good, and he is to be commended for it (For the record I was for the Tyler Hansbrough pick and still am). I think we got a tad lucky on the Josh Mcroberts trade.

There are negatives:

1.) Shawne Williams… I hate to beat a dead horse but this one is on Larry. This essentially cost us a mid first round pick.
2.) Jim Obrien… Sure he was effectively brought in as an interim, but to stand by him through his continued madness is tough to understand.
3.) Not unloading Dunleavy and Foster when they had value. This essentially cost us a low first round pick worth of value.
4.) The jury is still deliberating on Brandon Rush.
5.) Lance Stephenson vs Magnum Rolle vs Solomon Jones. Why we paid Lance based on just Summer League, and kept Jones over Rolle is unimaginable. There would be minutes for magnum PF on this team right now. this cost us at least a high 2nd round pick worth of value.
6.) James White. This cost us a high second round pick and a future first worth of value.

that totals 3 or 4 first round picks (depending on whether you consider Rush a bust) and 2 decent 2nd rounders. I understand I am complaining that he hasn’t been perfect, and almost nobody is, but the fact remains that his critics have their fair share of ammo too.

by indycrr on Nov 12, 2010 9:31 AM EST reply actions

I don't think Magnum would be that much of a difference

James White was just an experiment, I can’t blame Bird for trying out an athletic 2nd rounder who can literally fly. I think Stephenson is working on his defense, and should has some playing time while TJ Ford goes through his annual ‘down period’.

by latrell spreewel on Nov 12, 2010 11:11 AM EST up reply actions

Okay but still, nobody gets everything right, even Bill Polian gets things wrong and people see him as probably the best GM in football. Expecting to hit on all your draft picks is insane.

by B-Huse on Nov 12, 2010 2:09 PM EST up reply actions

Will the Larry Bird apology sessions ever stop?

We’ve been a downtrodden lotto team for 5 years. We still don’t have a franchise player. We still don’t have anything close to a championship core. He’s missed on way more than he’s hit.

The next article will praise him for finding his car keys and making it to work on time?

" Tell me something Steve, How does a guy from Puerto Rico loose a ball in the Sun? "

by aaronb on Nov 12, 2010 3:15 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, Larry inherited an AWFUL situation. If you wanted a guy to get rid of all of those thugs and magically get this team into the finals afterwords then you’re high. Thigs were always going to be bad for a while. He did great with Danny, Roy, and even Tyler. He traded Jerryd Bayless (who has had I think two good games) for McRoberts, Jarrett Jack, and Brandon Rush. Then he got Darren Collison. He has put us into one of the top 5 situations in the league with great young talent and the highly coveted expiring contracts. Some of these guys are like Fox News and he’s a democrat. He does something right and it doesn’t matterm he does something wrong and he’s the worst to ever walk the earth. Like I said, the guys not perfect, I still think he should get rid of O’Brien, They need to have their new coach in with these young players as soon as possible. But I mean he has made some great andhe gets zero credit for doing things right.

by B-Huse on Nov 14, 2010 2:25 AM EST up reply actions

don’t over do it to make a point B-huse. we are not one of the top 5 situations in the league. not even close

by dbcb on Nov 14, 2010 9:17 AM EST up reply actions

No, I really do think so. I’m not saying we’re a top 5 team but we are in a really good situation right now.
