Another Idea for the Pacers in 2010.

First of all, at least we have the kind of fans that instead of continually bashing the team EVERY day like a lot of fans.  At least we can talk about and look forward to next year.

Thanks to Aaronb my brain started churning about ideas for the Pacers next year.

Lots of ideas and salary cap info after the jump.

Star-divide

Pacers try to trade Murphy ($11,047,619) and Solo Jones ($1,620,000) to Cleveland for Ilgauskas ($11,541,074) and JJ Hickson ($1,429,200).  If they won't do it, then Just Murphy for Ilgauskas.  I honestly think that some kind of deal for Jamario Moon would be a great thing for the Pacers, but for some reason not many people share my enthusiasm.

Another idea, assuming the Nets get the #1 pick and want John Wall...  Trade them TJ Ford ($8,775,000),who has a player option for next year, so I don't really know how that would work if he got traded, but the worst case scenario for them is that his contract expires in 2011).  Ford would at worst have just that 1 year left, whereas Harris would have 3 years left at an average of almost 9mil per year.  It will probably take more than just TJ ford, but I'm not sure how much more.

Take offers on Dunleavy, but keep him unless the deal is pretty nice.  He's going to be making $10,561,984 next year, but it's the last year of his contract.  So either we trade him this year for a worthwhile deal or we keep him a little into next year and use him as trade bait before the deadline, his juicy 10.5 mil expiring contract should draw interest.  Worse comes to worse he plays for us next year and if stays healthy brings us some points from off the bench and brings US cap relief in 2011.

I would REALLY love it if the Pacers could somehow work out a deal to trade Jeff Foster to the nuggets for Lawson, but it doesn't seem like this trade is much of a possibility.  Just think of how nice it would be to have the Devin Harris trade happen, and have Lawson, Dunleavy, and Hansbrough coming off the bench....

Resign 1 of the 2 Watson ($2,800,000) OR Travis Diener ($1,740,000).  Don't resign Luther Head ($884,881), unless he just goes crazy the rest of the year.  Resign AJ Price for his $765,162 non-guaranteed contract.  I'm waffling over weather or not to resign McRoberts, who has a NON-guaranteed contract for $885,120 scheduled for 2010, I'm leaning more towards letting him go.  Assuming all this is done, which I'm sure isn't how it will really go, the Pacers would free up 3.5-4.5 million dollars.  If ONLY the Murphy trade would happen we would still have a LOT of cap relief.  Our total salary cap would sit at $53,180,301, which leaves us with almost $12,000,000 to spend before hitting the lowered luxury tax of next year if all of my calculations are correct.  From what I've read the luxury tax should be set at about $65,000,000 for next year.  To me the 2010 Free Agent Class looks a lot more appetizing than the 2011 class.

2010 Free Agents:

Joe Johnson
Ray Allen
Manu Ginobili
Marcus Camby
Tracey McGrady
Shaquille O'Neal
Brad Miller
Stephen Jackson
Jermaine O'Neal
Mike Miller
Rip Hamilton

but more importantly here are the players that can opt out of there current contracts next year:

Yao Ming (owed 17.7 million in 10/11)
Amare Stoudamire (owed 17.7 million in 10/11)
LeBron James (owed 17.2 million in 10/11)
Dwayne Wade (owed 17.0 million in 10/11)
Chris Bosh (owed 17.1 million in 10/11)
Dirk Nowitzki (owed $21.5 million in 10/11)
Josh Howard (owed $11.8 million in 10/11)
Mike Redd (owed $18.3 million in 10/11)
Tyson Chandler (owed $12.8 million in 10/11)

Obviously we would have to find a way to clear a little more cap space to get any of the BIG names it would seem like, but at least here the list is for everyone to mow over.

As for the draft,

I would really like to get Evan Turner.  I just think his leadership and pure talent would be a perfect fit for the team.

Another guy I was starting to give more thought to is the Downey guy from South Carolina.  I'm not sure how his game is really going to translate to the NBA though.  He is EXTREMELY fast, a good leader, no one can trap him, he's at least a decent passer, great scorer, 2nd in the NCAA in steals, and he loves to have the ball in the big moments.  All of these qualities would be great to have on the team, but once again, will he be all of this in the NBA?  His downfall would have to be his height.

I think Cousins will be a great NBA player, but I think it will be hard for us to pick him after picking Hansbrough this year.  Cousins could turn out to be extremely streaky in the NBA though.

Ideal lineup for 2010:

PG - Devin Harris

SG - Evan Turner

SF - Danny Granger

PF - JJ Hickson

C - Roy Hibbert

Bench:

Ty Lawson

Mike Dunleavy

Tyler Hansbrough

AJ Price or Earl Watson

Brandon Rush

Dahntay Jones

Jeff Foster

This Roster is not even including whoever we would sign with the $12,000,000 of cap space we would have.  So imagine the type of team that we could have.  Maybe you guys have some more ideas on how to clear up a little more cap space to sign someone like Chris Bosh or Amare Stoudemire to start at PF instead of Hickson, but I can't really see any other spots to find money.

Is all of this stuff just too far out of reach?  Does it just make sense in my own crazy brain?  Let me hear some feedback.

It took me quite some time to look up the information in here, so even if my ideas don't make sense, maybe it will help some of you guys get some ideas.

found a mistake already...

We wouldn’t have both Foster and Lawson, and I didn’t really propose anything about the Lawson deal, but I would like to hear your ideas. Do you guys think it would even be a good idea to trade for Lawson at all? Or for that matter even trade Foster at all.

if it helps...

Ty Lawson ($1,438,680)
Jeff Foster ($6,007,500)

Yeah

I like Foster for Lawson in some way, but I doubt Denver gives up Lawson just to get Foster and its hard to make the money match up. I tried forever before just giving up and adding a fourth team to make it work.

TJ Ford for Devin Harris is one of the worst trade ideas I've ever heard.

Like…Nets fans would burn down their new arena if it happened. Beyond that, it makes NO sense. Not only would the Nets be trading a good young PG for a bad one older one, but Wall is a PG. It all hurts my head.

by SethGrandpa on Jan 29, 2010 1:57 AM EST reply actions

of course it will take more than just ford

as I posted, but that’s a least a start. Depending on how Harris’ injury goes, I’d be willing to give up the first round pick depending on where pick falls, to get harris. I wonder if they would take Ford and 2 second round draft picks for Harris, just to free up the cap space and let John Wall play.

Another Idea, what about not resigning watson or diener and signing Rafer Alston? Who would you rather have, Alston, Diener or Watson?

Put yourself in the Nets shoes

You have two decent players (Harris & Lopez) and you win the lottery. Everyone in the world has pretty much agreed that Wall is the #1 pick. You have to take him as he is, apparently, a once in a generation PG. So you take him. Now of your three best players, two are PGs. You don’t trade Harris to get another PG, you trade him to get a good wing player. That way you have PG, Wing, C and something to build on.

Further, Devin Harris was the key to prying Jason Kidd away from NJ. That was only a year ago. If NJ takes Wall, everyone will know that Harris is on the block. If the best offer NJ can get for Harris is Ford, that means that all other teams have closed up shop and the NBA ceases to exist. And even without an Association to play in, I don’t think the Nets do this.

by TheHawk5 on Jan 29, 2010 10:45 AM EST up reply actions

i can see this...

Yea I honestly don’t think we will get Ford for Harris, but with a pick or something else it might be possible. But the idea of trading ford for harris isnt because the Nets would want Ford for his play, just for his expiring contract because harris would still have 3 years left on his contract.

but...

The nets do have some wing players in Lee and Douglas-Roberts. They do need help at SF. Maybe they would want to work out some deal to get Dunleavy?

Cousins

I don’t think you can pass on DeMarcus Cousins just because of Hansboro.

Hansboro at his best will be a 2nd unit offensive big. DeMarcus Cousins on the other hand should develop into a rugged interior defender and rebounder. We haven’t had a guy like that since Dale Davis. (JO doesn’t count, he wasn’t a top defender or rebounder).

Since teams generally use 4 bigs in their rotation, depth is a must.

I like cousins a lot...

but if Hansbrough will at best only be a 2nd string player, why would Bird draft him in the first round last year?

Wasn't that the question at the time?

not really.

I thought we drafted him to be a future starter, maybe I was wrong.

jo

was a great defender in his prime on the pacers…

by BenD on Jan 29, 2010 12:30 PM EST up reply actions

JO is the Pacer’s leading shot blocker and third in rebounds per game. He also took countless charges and altered tons of shots. To say he wasn’t a top rebounder or defender is crazy.

It’s true… say what you want about his ability to lead but at one point he had to be one of the most frustrating players to play against in the NBA. When he wasn’t swatting the ball he was taking an infinite number of charges to force turnovers. Okay he didn’t get us a championship… a lot of greats don’t get championships…. that’s just how it works.

by B-Huse on Jan 30, 2010 12:29 PM EST up reply actions

The only way we get Harris is with our 1st pick this year. It’s either Evan Turner or Devin Harris. Plus with the wing help they would need, I would see them taking our first pick with Dunleavy. The Lawson/Foster trade doesn’t work with the money and I doubt the Nugs give him up even as much as they love Foster. Plus don’t pass up on Derrick Favors… you want one want of the best interior defenses in the league? Favors and Hibbert would be scary. But Turner gives us a possibility at point guard but if it doesn’t work he can go to the wing. Oh and even if we do give up all these contracts to go for the 2010 free agency we still have Tinsley’s contract. We wouldn’t be able to do much with his also.

by B-Huse on Jan 29, 2010 10:57 AM EST reply actions

Turner can handle the ball a bit, but I don’t know how good of a PG he would be in the NBA, he would be much better on the wing, but he still needs to learn how to hit the 3 more consistently.
I don’t know why I left Favors out, but he’s a great player too. I just haven’t seen him as much as the others I mentioned.
The cap information I provided above INCLUDES the Tinsley contract against our cap.

Oh sorry about the Tinsley thing… most people forget.

by B-Huse on Jan 29, 2010 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

what about...

drafting a guy like cousins or favors or trading for Hickson, and using our cap space to go after a guy like Rip Hamilton? If we can trade for hickson, we could trade the draft pick along with ford for Harris.
then our lineup looks like:
Devin Harris
Rip Hamilton
Danny Granger
JJ Hickson
Roy Hibbert

possible?

rip

is not a free agent! he just signed a huge contract, thats why they can’t trade him…. ???

Thoughts on Downey...

I watched that Kentucky game the other night as well. I thought he was incredible, but I don’t know about him being that great in the pros. He is quick as all hell, but I would be really disappointed with him being our first rounder this year.

by captain flitzy on Jan 29, 2010 1:16 PM EST reply actions

He isn't even rated in Chad Ford's top 100

If you want Downey you can probably get him as a rookie Free Agent

They all see him as too short. He’s listed as 5’9 but that’s gracious. The only was he gets on a team would be in the second round but there’s a lot of doubt he could survive. Too bad too cause he is so talented. If he was 6’6 he would be a lottery pick.

by B-Huse on Jan 29, 2010 3:10 PM EST up reply actions

yea that would be nice...

I just have a feeling about him for some reason…
who knows though, he could be another guy who does NOTHING in the pros… he is extremely short, but he gets to the rim well and creates space with his body. With his speed, he could really cause some trouble.

~SHaFF!~

by SHaFF87 on Jan 29, 2010 8:27 PM EST up reply actions

yea...

I think we are going to be too high in the lottery to get him with our 1st round. I honestly don’t think he would fall to our 2nd round pick unless no one is big on him. If he falls to the 2nd, i think we HAVE to get him. I dont know if he will be that good in the pros either, but if he is, we would be really missing out.

~SHaFF!~

by SHaFF87 on Jan 29, 2010 8:25 PM EST up reply actions

If nobody else is on the bored he might be a player to look at. I think if he gets a great three and learns to work the ball really well… it would be impossible for teams to pass him up.

by B-Huse on Jan 29, 2010 9:00 PM EST up reply actions

he can shoot the 3...

but it seems like for being so short his release might be too long on his 3s when he goes to the NBA. He can get through double teams with ease because of his speed though.

~SHaFF!~

by SHaFF87 on Jan 30, 2010 3:41 PM EST up reply actions

Oh yea dont get me wrong he can hit the 3. But, I’m saying he would have to improve it even more and can be a player who moves without the ball extremely well… then NBA teams couldn’t pass him up.

by B-Huse on Jan 30, 2010 4:53 PM EST up reply actions

Bird Rights?

You do know that your so called cap room between the basic salary cap and the luxury cap can only be used to resign players whom you have bird rights to? From what i gather in your article, you’re mistaken about the usage of those 12 Mil. Namely, you CANT use that to sign unrestricted free agents whom you don’t have bird rights to.
