Some thoughts on trades

While I'm aware that trading is not as easy as we make it seem, there has to be something done with this roster NOW. Some thoughts after the jump on what we can do.

Star-divide

I've been reading some very interesting ideas about how to fix the Pacers. Some have been very intriguing though I must admit I do not agree with them all.
However, this team can be fixed. Now. I don't think fans (especially this one) can wait another year or two for this team to stop being the laughing stock of the NBA (along with the Nets).
Two things need to happen immediately. Roy Hibbert needs to start. ASAP. The guy is a 20-10 center if he's able to get big minutes, I honestly think we had a chance to win the Laker game last night if Hibbert had started. The thing that intrigues me is that Hibbert is starting to believe in his own abilities. He basically called JOB out last night after the game. He also called out the team on it's infatuation with the three-point shot. It seems like the only person who doesn't understand how to win is the coach.
Now the other thing that needs to happen has to happen before Feb. 18. Troy Murphy and TJ Ford need to be traded.
Ford is a likeable guy, but he does not fit this team at all. I think that he could be moved for the right combination of players and picks. With his contract, we're not going to get a top-quality PG, but we could get a utility player ala Jeff Foster that could be packaged with Troy and sent elsewhere. I'm not a huge fan of the Big Z trade, but it would give us some financial flexibility.
But, if I were the GM (how many of us have said that lately?) I would be talking to Memphis and Philly right now. The Grizz are looking to move Gay and the 76ers want to get rid of Iguadola. While it'd be hard to get either team to take on Ford, a combo of Murph/Foster/Rush might entice either team to take on Ford as well. The Grizz are the more attractive of these teams to me as far as trading. They have three PGs (Williams, Tinsley, and Conley). I'm willing to bet they'd be willing to part with Williams. Gay and Williams together don't make enough money to warrant sending them all of our terrible players, but we could get Foster off the books this way if we package him with say Rush or Solo/McBob (since we don't use them anyway).
I think Gay and Granger together would give us a very potent offensive punch. The same is true about Iggy though, in my opinion, to a lesser extent. Gay could take some of the pressure off of DG33 and allow him to get more open looks while gay drives the lane.
I really hope JOB and Larry Bird visit indycornrows.com...seems like they need a little help with the team. lol

Rudy Gay…. I’m going to go ahead and say is… impossible to get. Him and Danny would make a scary combo but if you look at Memphis’ contracts and ours…. It’s actually really close to being impossible cause Gay only makes like 3 mil. a year. I’d say the only glimmer of hope would be to move our draft pick which I don’t think we’re willing to do. I can see the Sixers goin for a trade like this:

Sixers Get: TJ, Foster, Ilgauskas

Cavs Get: Troy

We Get: Andre Iguodala and Elton Brand

Cause the Sixers won’t give up Iggy easy but if they can move Brand and get some expiring deals I’d feel they jump on it. Add a low draft pick and things could be lookin pretty good for us. But the trade better work, cause we’d be tied down for another decade if it didn’t.

Yea

Contracts were a large problem when I thought of this, but the trade you proposed is attractive…except for the fact that we’d be stuck with Brand.

Pacers should make trades for expiring contracts/draft picks.

That is it.

Agreed

But most people aren’t looking to part ways with expiring deals at this point…

I’m not sure there is a quick fix, when this franchise has been shooting itself in the foot for years.

Agree with Hibby being a 20/10 guy if he gets more minutes and more quality ball. First of all no-one is gonna trade for Ford, especially when Larry/JOB isn’t even willing to play him in garbage time. TJ Ford’s trade value is probably as low as it will ever be. Secondly we don’t need any more utility players. Our team is full of bench players, what we need is draft picks, and young, high-upside projects guy(like Anthony Randolph). While I like acquiring Rudy Gay, I’m not sure what we could offer the Griz, except for DG33 and Hibby. Yeah, they would be willing to part with Williams, but really, how is a 3rd string PG gonna improve our team? I personally don’t like the Iggy deal all that much. Let me correct that. I like Iggy, but not his contract, and chances are Philly will want to offload Brand on us too. I think you’re overestimating the trade value of Solo/McBob. If we don’t think their good enough to get significant minutes, why would Philly think their good enough to trade for?

i like the thoughts as well....

I think Iggy would be better for us.

I am confused......

Iggy and Gay both put up big numbers, but do we really need more wing players who pound the ball into the floor and then take long contested jump shots? It seems like we already have some guys who fit that mold.

I had a quick play around with the ESPN trade machine, and I came up with this

It’s gonna hurt a bit, okay it’ll hurt a lot, but its an idea. It’s a three-way trade with Cavs and Philly

Pacers trade:
- Troy Murphy and Jeff Foster to the Cavs
- Mike Dunleavy to Philly

Cavs trade:
- Ilgauskas and Hickson to Phily
- Leon Powe to Pacers

Philly trades:
- Iguodala and Brand to Pacers

Now my reasoning for this trade.
Philly gets to be rid of two huge contracts, and picks up Big Z’s expiring one plus shorter contacts in Dunleavy and Hickson. This puts them in a position to rebuild in the near future.
Cavs get Murphy as they wanted, but they take Jeff Foster too who can act as back up to Shaq since Big Z is gone.
Pacers (unfortunately) take on the mammoth contracts of Brand and Iggy, but the starting lineup looks a lot more threatning
- PG Watson
- SG Iggy
- SF Granger
- PF Brand
- C Hibbert

I can understand that the Pacers aren’t in the greatest financial situation at the moment, but what I am proposing is that the way we climb out of it is by winning games, and a lot of them. I think its a pretty solid starting lineup, which should make the playoffs barring any major injuries. Wins = more exposure = more money.

Let me know what you think.

Nice starting lineup but...

it’s very much a win-now team. Brand is useful but going downhill quickly, and he’s still on the books for 5 more years. This starting line-up will make us first-round play-off fodder, while giving us a non-lottery pick – and another Tyler Hansbro-type role player. Then we’re stuck with 3 years of Brand being useless, and taking up capspace. By acquiring Brand, all we’re doing is delaying rebuilding by a few more years.

You mean practically the same trade I put up top? lol The Cavs are hesitant on trading Ilgauskas in the first place. I don’t know if they do the trade if you package Leon Powe and especially Hickson out the door. The idea of the Sixers acquiring Ilgauskas would mean they probably buy out his contract and let him leave so he’s free to play with Cleveland again.

But let’s also think of this…. We currently have the 5th worst record in the league behind New Jersey, Minnesota, Golden State, and Detroit. Detroit’s getting all its players back after a flurry of injuries hit their squad. So, we’re looking at the number 4 spot in the lottery and that only increases our chances to get a player like John Wall, Derrick Favors, Evan Turner, or Wesley Johnson. Now, I don’t know about you…. but I’m sick of seeing this team limp on. We need to think bigger. A team with John Wall, Danny, Roy, and Iggy? Now THAT is something to shoot for…. That’s a title contender in less than 3 years.
