Pacers Close To Losing Out On Gortat

Mark Stein of ESPN.com is reporting the Dallas Mavericks are close to signing Marcin Gortat. Stein said Gortat gave a verbal committment to the Mavs to sign an offer sheet next week. The Indiana Pacers have been linked to Gortat since the free agent market opened on Wednesday morning. The Rockets, Spurs, Hawks, Cavs and Thunder have also been heavily interested in the restricted free agent.

Stein said the Mavs' deal is expected to be worth the team's full mid-level exception, a five-year offer starting at $5.6 million. The Pacers have $8 million available to spend on free agents this summer. It appears that the Mavs offer will effectively end the Pacers pursuit of the 6-foot-11 power forward.

Gortat averaged 3.3 points and 3.2 rebounds during Orlando's trip through the NBA Postseason this Spring.

Stein knows the Mavs like no other. Five year deals scare me these days so I’m glad the Pacers aren’t tying up 30 mil on the guy hoping he turns into a beast.

No Gortat

I am glad that the Pacers aren’t dropping the money it would take to land Gortat. He is a complimentary player only. He’s good rolling to the hoop and attacking hard, but not a good finisher, no touch, all he can do is dunk. To be honest, he didn’t play enough to really have any idea what you’ll get on a full-time basis. Any team that signs him will be overpaying based on his body of work to this point…

I write this with the assumption that teams want him as their starting center?? I’m also assuming he’s aiming for the mid-level exception…
