IC Cold Links: Pacers Offseason Workload Ramps Up
Here are some links of interest as the Pacers begin working in earnest to fill out their roster for the upcoming season:
- Pacers' priorities start from within
Mike Wells reports on Larry Bird's comments yesterday as the Pacers head into the free agent signing period."It's a three-year plan and I wouldn't do anything to jeopardize any of these young guys because they are going to be good," Bird said. "If I can add to that core through a trade, I probably will."
- Future of Pacers franchise showcased in summer
Bruno's latest Caught in the Web delves into the summer work set to begin this week and finds Larry Bird and David Morway excited about seeing what their young core can do together. - One-on-One With Pacers' Danny Granger -- NBA FanHouse
Danny Granger made the media rounds yesterday humping his newly minted association with Team EAS. Along with a few radio appearances was this interview with the FanHouse. - Danny Granger also checked in with JMV (audio).
- 670 The Score - Boers and Bernstein Interviews Danny Granger
Danny Granger dropped in on this Chicago radio show as part of his media rounds yesterday. Pretty funny. - Is Marquis Daniels still an option for Indiana?
Andrew Pema at RealGM explores the possibility of the Pacers signing Marquis Daniels at a more reasonable salary to fit under the cap. - Pistons fire Michael Curry, inquire about Avery Johnson
Central Division rival, Detroit fired their head coach Michael Curry yesterday. My initial thought was that Bill Laimbeer was dialed in to take over, but apparently that's not the case according to information dripping out from the organization. Suddenly a huge transition year for the Pistons and Joe Dumars. - Daryl Morey's Facebook Request - TrueHoop
I'm sure the Pacers would love to add Marcin Gortat to the roster this summer but somehow, I don't see Larry Bird using social media as a recruiting tool.

Pistons?
The Iverson trade seemed like a real franchise crippler for the Pistons. I’ve generally seen AI as cash and flash but no wins. They traded away a really strong player in Billups. If they are dumping a head coach over last year’s results then they deserve what will happen to them next year. Do they have some huge master plan in place? I don’t get it.

Curry wasn’t ready to be a head coach, especially not over a team of headcases. He lost control of that team really early. Keeping him was pointless.
The iverson trade was just a cash dump which would have been great because that team went as far as they could go… but then Dumar’s turned around and extended hamilton?? that made/makes no sense.
and you do have to remember, billups wasn’t the same billups he was in Denver. Like the rest of the team, he wasn’t giving 100%. Trading him back home really revitalized him.

I was thinking...
the exact opposite this morning. That team was no where near being able to compete with Orlando, Boston, Cleveland, even Atlanta for that matter. They cleared up a TON of cap space, threw away a season, gave the fans a little something with iverson, and now are in great position to get younger and more talented. It makes me sorta wish we had some plan like that to be honest.

Younger perhaps
But more talented? Not if their plan is to sign Gordon and Villanueva….

Yeah. At least its one less team in the Central that we have to worry about…. Looks like we will be guaranteed no worse than 3rd in the division for the next 5 years or so!

I know one thing though...
they werent getting more talented or younger with billups eating their cap the next 3-4 years. Not that Gordon and Villanueva is the best signing of all time, but at least theyre PUTTING THEMSELVES IN THE POSITION TO MAKE A MOVE. That was the beauty of the move. How they choose to operate with their freedom is the problem (and Indy’s, i guess).
