2009 NBA Draft Open Thread

After wading through several weeks of speculation, workouts, rumors and more speculation, it's finally time for the 2009 NBA Draft. Please use the comments for your reactions to capture all of the excitement and/or outrage as the draft unfolds. If you hear about a rumor or an actual deal, share with the class. Any and all draft-related comments are welcomed.

Make sure you keep a Pacers.com browser open, as well. Conrad Brunner and myself will be blogging the action from the Fieldhouse. For a little additional reading, here's another story I meant to link earlier:

i just got a call

from a friend, who says he heard amare stoudemire and barbosa to the thunder for draft picks and as a salary dump???? LITERALLY NO CLUE the credibilty of that, he said he heard it from a friend who is a suns fan, who im assuming was reading a message board or something? Interesting to think about. ITS NOT FAIR, I WANT AMARE!

sounds quite unlikely

they just saved about $9 million (4.5 plus luxury tax) in the shaq trade so they don’t need to dump too much more

from draftexpress.com's live blog

Vince Carter is apparently close to getting traded for Tony Battie, Courtney Lee and Rafer Alston. The trade is “80% done” according to a source, but there are other trades available to the Magic.

Big day!

Hi everyone. I’ve been lurking around here all last season and figured this is as good a time to start posting as any. Love this blog.

I’ve heard rumors that Houston is trying to move into the lottery and Landry’s name seems to be tossed around. So the question, what would you think about swapping the #13 for Landry?

by indy62 on Jun 25, 2009 5:02 PM EDT reply actions

hope not...

I like him, but i wanna shoot for the stttaarrrrrsssss tonite hahah

by captain flitzy on Jun 25, 2009 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't do it straight up

but I’m a big fan of Landry and wouldn’t mind figuring out a way to get him. If we could somehow move back to the 20-24 range for landry, I would do it.

If we are going to pick a PF anyways...

What you need to ask yourself is: would you would rather have Landry or Blair?

Oops

Meant to reply to the above post. See, I’m new at this…

Landry and Brandon Jennings
or
Blair and AJ Price

Magic?

If this is the case:

“Vince Carter is apparently close to getting traded for Tony Battie, Courtney Lee and Rafer Alston. The trade is “80% done” according to a source, but there are other trades available to the Magic."

Maybe the Magic would be interested in the Tinsley deal again…. They’ll need another point guard. I know they were a bit more desperate around the trade deadline due to Nelson’s injury, but hey, a guy can dream….

by indy62 on Jun 25, 2009 5:29 PM EDT reply actions

Both sides have agreed

to the deal according to ESPN. Looks like it’s just waiting for some signatures. Who got the best of the deals today: the Magic or Cavs?

by spstevenson on Jun 25, 2009 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Tough call

Both teams improved without parting with much. I actually really liked New Jersey’s side of it. Harris, Lee, and Brooks is a good young top three to build around.

by goodlucksaturday on Jun 25, 2009 6:14 PM EDT up reply actions

And the Nets

picked up a lot of salary that will come off the books in 2010 ($16.5 million). ESPN says the deal will save them $40 million.

by spstevenson on Jun 25, 2009 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Set to make a big splash next summer?

I don’t think the Nets are going to be much better in 09-10 (if they don’t make anymore big moves), but they could ascend to the East’s elite very quickly with a good free agent pickup next summer.

Can’t say I’m not envious of all that wiggle room.

by goodlucksaturday on Jun 25, 2009 6:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah but they lost Ryan Anderson, who is an absolute god.

Mock drafts are

pouring in online. Bleacher Report says the Pacers will tab Jennings; RealGM says its Blair. A lot of people seem set that Jennings will fall to the Pacers. If he does, should we take him?

by spstevenson on Jun 25, 2009 6:15 PM EDT reply actions

Jennings is my guy

But I’m not understanding why Jennings is just FALLING in mocks today. He was mid lottery through the entire process and now today I’m hearing him being low teens, maybe even 20? If he falls that much, maybe we can have our cake and eat it too? Blair AND Jennings? Not holding my breath, but I do hope Jennings is in blue and gold.

by goodlucksaturday on Jun 25, 2009 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions

if he falls

I would love to see us take him. A lot of talent, I think too much to pass up.

the saddest part of the whole MJ story is that everyone under the age of 15 or so only knows him as a crazy former pop star. it’s hard to appreciate the music if all you’ve ever heard are the weird stories.

Very excited, tremendously tough guy, as hard a worker as Larry Bird. He’ll make every practice better and every player better and leave everything he has on the court. Great success in college, great free throw shooter.

Larry Bird is so predictable they should just call him PredictaBird…. this team just ended up with “McRoberts 2” and it was pretty obvious from a long time ago that this would be the pick. They will regret it in another 4-5 years when Hansborough is in the NBDL while Blair is top 10 in rebounding.

by goodlucksaturday on Jun 25, 2009 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

People, seriously

The Pacers are more than just the 13th pick away from being a playoff team. Maybe there is a trade in the works, but realistically, with a team featuring TJ Ford and Jarrett Jack, it makes no sense to draft ANOTHER PG.

The Pacers are rebuilding with “high effort” players, not “upside” guys with questionable character. We tried that already, and it got us no where. They are also waiting until some of the huge salary players (Dunleavy, Murphy, Tinsely, etc.) come off the books. This will allow them to go out and sign some marquis players.

Tyler fits exactly the mold of the modern Pacers: Tough, high effort, play till the end. Most NBA players are NOT like this. Consider yourself lucky the team is now stacked with them as the rebuild.

I don't feel like I have to. It's like if the Colts drafted a Texas Tech or Hawaii QB to take over for Manning.

He doesn’t have a game that will translate. You can’t be unathletic and succeed in the NBA at forward.

I don’t think you follow the Pacers enough to make these statements. Jack isn’t even signed for next year. I know we aren’t one player away, that’s why Tyler makes no sense. And marquis players don’t sign with the Pacers, never have never will. Draft for upside now, Holiday was the pick.

by ThirtyOne on Jun 25, 2009 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

PAcers

Hi. I do follow the Pacers enough to make any statements I please. Get over yourself.

Why doesn’t taking another high effort player make “no sense?” It’s how Bird is rebuilding the team. You can disagree with that philosophy, but that same notion got Indy Granger and Rush.

Oh, and unless you plan on having the #1 pick in the draft, you absolutely, positively MUST sign or trade for a marquis player. Otherwise, you’re wasting our time. Indy can’t do that now with the contracts they have. Once those contracts are gone, then they should make an effort to sign someone.

If they don’t, THEN the fire bird cries start having some merit.

Find me a big time FA who has ever signed in Indy.

Do it. You’ll be looking a long time. It’s not somewhere NBA players want to go. The Pacers have to build through the draft and trades, which is why wasting a pick is criminal. And it’s the 3rd time in the past 4 years (Shawne, trade for Al Harrington, Tyler).

by SethGrandpa on Jun 25, 2009 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Name one

Please name ONE marquis free agent this team has signed ever. And no, re-signing Reggie doesn’t count. The city’s too small, the weather’s too shitty. It just doesn’t happen. So you have to build through the draft. Tyler at 13 is not the answer. And Granger was a top 10 talent that teams got scared of because of perceived knee problems (sound familiar? Blair). Trading is a possibility but not with these contracts (which I agree with you on). So why not take a chance on a high upside guy, rather than a junior version of a player we already have twice?

by TheHawk5 on Jun 25, 2009 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Free agent signing require two parties to agree doesn’t it? Aren’t you the same guy who bemoans signing free agents to big deals in the NFL?

And we can’t make trades with players no one else wants, i.e. Tyler H.

It’s about winning a ring. This team is not built to win a ring, and it won’t be until it has cap room, allowing them to bring in a marquis player to help them win a ring. This is the NBA. Stars rule the association. No stars? No ring.

is if we’re waiting a few years for cap relief, I don’t understand why we aren’t drafting for future potential? If we’re not in a position to win now, why draft like we are? That’s the biggest issue I have with Hansbrough.

is it weird that their haven't been any trades yet

except for lawson that is

I wasn't big on him

But I thought that was just me. Weird.

My Guess

Height concerns + bad perceptions about his knees = Slippage. He owned Thabeet though, he’s tough. I refuse to believe that I’m THIS wrong about him.

do you need those?

Nah

they’re like your appendix. Totally worthless.

I never thought he was lottery worthy but I figured he’d be gone by now, or before hansbrough for that matter……..

Well guys

It’s been real. Looks like Hansbrough is our guy, for better or worse, so it’s time to move forward with that. Everyone take it easy. Maybe I’ll come back and discover a miracle has transpired.

Don’t even joke, there’s too much of a possibility this could come true.

by ThirtyOne on Jun 25, 2009 10:16 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed

And they can shove all the B.S. about drafting guys because they are high character. A.J. Price was convicted of stealing laptops in college. What kind of idiot steals computers in college? He sucks and will not even make the team.

Agreed on character thing

But another senior? Why does Bird think that only seniors who are 22 or older are draftable? It seems to be the Billy Beane “Moneyball” theory of only drafting seasoned college players rather than young guns. Works (to a point) in baseball, not in basketball. I have no idea what the point is. If the point is to make the playoffs, we’ll succeed in short order. If the goal is winning a title, which it should be, we probably need a new GM.

I feel everyone is overreacting a wee bit. I am far more mad about passing up on Patty than the Hansbrough pick. It was a shitty draft for the Pacers. But do people think Hansbrough will be bad? No. He just won’t be great. I honestly want him to play on Indiana for a long time. We are building a a very young and very good team. When we are in the playoffs next year (or at worst, the year after) Hansbrough will be an asset because he is a winner. He will never be a star. He may average a double-double over a few seasons, but never a lot more. However, if I am building a team for the future, I want a guy like Hansbrough on there (You know, just not in the lottery).

Not as useful as Rated-R Superstar, but, hey!, I stick my Grease watching to once a weekend.

Great now we can’t even sign Vaden as a a free agent. He’ll be better than Price.
