Buying a Draft Pick

In Chad Ford's latest Insider Draft Article he mentions that there are plenty of teams willing to sell a draft pick and that the Pacers are one of the teams who might have interest.  Supposedly the going rate is up to $3 Million for a draft pick under NBA rules.  Picks 15, 21, and 24 are all up for grabs for the right price.  If I'm the Pacers and Larry Bird I really have to take a look at picking up an extra pick for this draft, especially if we take a Point Guard with the #13.  The reason is that whoever we draft at that position is probably going to make very little impact this season, so to prevent this draft from being a disappointment we could turn a purchased pick into an extra player who fans can put some hope into.  I would look at Austin Daye or an Earl Clark as a solid pick up with a purchased pick, since the ceiling is high and the risk is low with these two guys.  If we could come out of this draft with a solid point guard prospect and pick up a body to play in the post I think this will be a successful draft.  Who's with me?

I thought the pacers were hurting for money?

I thought we would be one of the teams to sell

But getting the 15 pick would be great. They could have a chance to get Lawson and Blair.

"I saw a commercial on late night TV, it said,'Forget everything you know about slipcovers.' So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were."

Lot of variables at play here

since I don’t see the Pacers spending past their cap restrictions. They project to have around $9-10 mil so maybe instead of adding a cheap veteran or re-signing they go for a pick. Of course, it would have to be dependent on how the draft shakes out and if certain targeted players are available, but I like the idea.

I’m looking at every move right now with how it will impact the team in 2011. They still need all types of players for all types of roles, so developing depth now would be smart. Also, tricky and difficult to pull off.

any reason you point to 2011?

Is it just the contracts that expire then? Off the top of my head I think all the bad contracts are up by that point – Dunleavy, Murphy, Tinsley, maybe JOB…

Any chance we trade Murphy for a more traditional PF now that his trade value is as high as it will ever be? I get the feeling the organization likes him too much to trade him, but personally, I wouldn’t mind trading him for a guy with equal rebounding capabilities and who can offset his 3 point shooting with great interior D. D’Antoni would love a guy like Murphy, wouldn’t he? But who do the Knicks have that we want? Okay, that’s enough thinking out loud

"If you don't [draft me], I promise you I'll come back and kick your ass for the next 15 years."

Expiring contracts

Murph, Dunleavy, Tinsley, Foster and Ford are all off the books after the 2010-11 season. So currently, the long term core leaves the Pacers with Granger, Rush and Hibbert.

JOB is up at the end of this year.

That sounds a great idea, if there’s nil interest in any free agent PF’s. Would be handy to pick a body with the higher pick and a guard with the lower, play it by ear though just pick the better player first and fill the other need with the lower pick…

I think if we did buy a pick, that would be the one used on PG.

I could totally (though possibly unfortunately) seeing us go Daye with the first and Maynor with the 2nd.
